Maia Matches, geboren in Toronto, Canada, is een gerespecteerd striptekenaar met een voorliefde voor openhartige details en een scherp oog voor feministische bekommernissen. Haar karakter ‘Bitch’ is een kenmerk van haar seksuele satire – een SM-liefhebbende actieheld in bikini en gevechtslaarzen.

Daarnaast heeft Maia journalistieke tekeningen gemaakt over maatschappelijke kwesties in de tijdgeest, zoals haar werk als City Illustrator in opdracht van het Stadsarchief Amsterdam in 2019. Haar maatschappijkritische werk werd gepubliceerd in dagblad Het Parool en haar originele tekeningen worden bewaard in het archief.

In deze workshop zal Maia een korte slideshow van haar stripwerk laten zien en praten over het activisme erachter. De bedoeling is om het maken van meer politiek geëngageerde strips te stimuleren door technieken te gebruiken die gebaseerd zijn op de lessen van Lynda Barry. Er is een korte opwarm- en brainstormsessie voordat we tot de kern komen. Deelnemers moeten hun eigen tekenmateriaal meenemen, dat wat hen het meest comfortabel lijkt, maar er zal ook basismateriaal beschikbaar zijn.

Dit evenement wordt georganiseerd in het kader van de tentoonstelling >Graphic Sapphic, in samenwerking met de Faculteit der Cultuur- en Maatschappijwetenschappen van de Universiteit Maastricht en de Nederlandse Onderzoeksraad (NWO).

Born in Toronto, Canada, Maia Matches has become a respected comic artist with a predilection for candid details and a sharp eye for feminist concerns. Her signature character ‘Bitch’ is a hallmark of her sexual satire – an S&M loving action-hero drawn clad in a bikini and combat boots.

Additionally, Maia has produced journalistic drawings covering social issues in the zeitgeist, exemplified in her work as City Illustrator, commissioned by the City Archives of Amsterdam in 2019. Her socially-critical work was published in Het Parool newspaper and her original drawings are stored at the archives.

In this workshop, Maia will show a short slideshow of her comic work and talk about the activism behind it. The intention is to stimulate the creation of more politically engaged comics by using techniques based on Lynda Barry’s teachings. There will be a brief warm-up and brainstorming session before getting down to the nitty-gitty. Workshop participants should bring their own drawing materials, that which feels most comfortable to them, however there will also be basic materials available for use.

This event is organized within the context of the exhibition >Graphic Sapphic, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University and the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
