De aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Protest2Pride waren vijf fotoboeken vol foto’s van Roze Zaterdagen uit de jaren ’80 en ’90 die Marian Bakker eerder dit jaar aan IHLIA doneerde. De foto’s schetsen een visueel tijdsbeeld van die jaren op verschillende plekken in Nederland. Kleding en accessoires verraadden tot welke subcultuur de geportretteerden behoorden, hun protestborden lieten zien welke thema’s zij belangrijk vonden en wat ze organiseerden toonde hun strategieën van activisme.  

Op 22 juli kun je de expositie en de fotoboeken live bekijken en gaan we samen op zoek naar: 

– Bekenden: herken je jezelf of anderen op de foto’s? Laat het ons weten om de ontsluiting van deze boeken completer te maken. 

– Herkenning: wat leeft er op de foto’s van toen dat er nu nog steeds leeft? 

– Hiaten: wat en wie mis je op de foto’s? Ken je mensen of organisaties die wel aanwezig waren maar niet gepresenteerd zijn? 

Bovenal is het een informele bijeenkomst om verhalen uit te wisselen. Herinneringen van lang geleden en ervaringen van nu. Heb je zelf foto’s van Roze Zaterdagen die je aan het archief wil doneren (digitaal of op papier), upload je foto dan >hier of stuur een mail naar aanmelden@ihlia.nl om de mogelijkheden te bespreken.

Informatie over expositie

In de tentoonstelling Protest2Pride onderzoekt IHLIA de Roze Zaterdag-protesten van de jaren ‘80 en ‘90 door de lens van fotograaf Marian Bakker. Marian zoomde in op lesbische subculturen, maar haar foto’s laten ook zien wie er in deze periode nog meer vochten voor lhbtiq+-rechten. Ze schetsen een tijdsbeeld van de jaren ’80 en ’90, hoe deze mensen zich kleedden, hun perspectieven, hun strategieën en hoe ze de weg vrijmaakten voor de Pride-vieringen die we vandaag de dag kennen. De foto’s van Marian fungeren als een genuanceerd historisch verslag, een bijdrage aan ons collectieve geheugen en begrip. 

The impetus for this photo exhibition were five photo books full of photos of Pink Saturdays from the 1980s and 1990s that Marian Bakker donated to IHLIA earlier this year. The photos paint a visual time image of those years in different places in the Netherlands. Clothing and accessories betray which subculture the people portrayed belonged to, their protest signs show which themes they thought were important and what they organized shows their strategies of activism.

On July 22, you can see the exhibition and the photo books live and we will explore together. Looking for:

– Acquaintances: do you recognize yourself or others in the photos? Let us know to make the unlocking of these books more complete.

– Recognition: what is alive in the photos from then that is still alive today?

– Gaps: what and who are you missing from the photos? Do you know people or organizations that were present but not presented?

Above all, it is an informal gathering to exchange stories. Memories from long ago and experiences from today. Information about the exhibition

In the exhibition Pride2Protest, IHLIA explores the Roze Zaterdag protests of the 80’s and 90’s through the lens of photographer Marian Bakker. Marian focused on lesbian subcultures, but her photos also zoom out to reveal who else was in the fight for LGBTIQ+ rights in this period, how they dressed, their perspectives, their strategies, and how they paved the way for the Pride celebrations we know today. Marian’s photos act as a nuanced historical record, a public service to our collective memory and understanding. They invite us to step into their world and consider how today’s activism, and the ways we document it, compares.
