Op 13 april opent bij IHLIA LGBTI Heritage de expositie Grapphic Sapphic over lesbische comics en cartoons uit Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk van de jaren 70 tot de jaren 90 van de vorige eeuw met een rondetafelgesprek met vier pioniers uit die tijd. De expositie is tot en met 9 juli te zien bij IHLIA op de derde verdieping van de Oosterdokskade 143 te Amsterdam. 

De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door Vasiliki Belia (PhD-kandidaat aan de Maastricht University) als onderdeel van het onderzoeksproject Redrawing feminism: graphic narrative engagements with the feminist past, ondersteund door het NWO. Tijdens de opening gaat Belia in gesprek met Carla Schrama, Kate Charlesworth, Peti Buchel en Sjuul Deckwitz. 

• Carla Schrama was in het feministisch activistisch milieu actief in de jaren 70 en 80 en is een van de oprichters van vrouwencafé Saarein. Ze is daarnaast een van de bedenkers van de stripserie Calla & Lucy Go West.  
• Kate Charlesworth is striptekenaar, grafisch romanschrijver en illustrator met een thuis in Edinburgh. Haar werk verscheen in talloze publicaties, waaronder Manchester Evening News, New Scientist Magazine en The Guardian. Ze is de mede-auteur van de graphic novel Sally Heathcote: Suffragette (2014 en auteur van de grafische memoir Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide (2019). 
• Peti Buchel is striptekenaar, grafisch romanschrijver, illustrator en kunstenaar. Haar leven beweegt zich tussen Amsterdam en Polranny, Ierland. Haar werk is veelomvattend en schitterde in verschillende contexten. Daarnaast is zij bestuurslid van online museum www.vrouwenvoornulater.nl over de tweede feministische golf in Nederland.
• Sjuul Deckwitz is schrijver en dichter en heeft zich altijd aangetrokken gevoeld tot het creëren van tijdschriftartikelen en boeken waarin cartoons en tekeningen de teksten aanvullen. Ze was in de jaren 70 en 80 actief in de feministische lesbische scene in Amsterdam en haar werk is veelal verschenen in Lust & Gratie. Haar oeuvre omvat romans, dichtbundels, korte verhalen en stripboeken. 

De sprekers nemen je mee terug in de tijd om te spreken over de context waarin hun creaties tot stand kwamen en hoe zij hun werk gebruikten om lesbische levens, relaties, culturen en gemeenschappen zichtbaar te maken en stereotypes over lesbiennes uit te dagen.  

Het rondetafelgesprek sluit aan bij de expositie die strips en cartoons toont uit de collectie van IHLIA en de persoonlijke archieven van tekenaars. Daarnaast zijn clips te zien waarin de tekenaars over hun werk en de context vertellen, evenals andere objecten en interactieve elementen waardoor de comics tot leven komen.  

Ook toont de expositie hoe deze tekeningen het veranderende maatschappelijke en politieke landschap reflecteerden en lesbiennes hielpen om hun eigen identiteit en relatie tot andere lhbtiq+-groeperingen, met een gezonde dosis humor, te onderzoeken. 

In een speciaal daarvoor ingerichte leeshoek kan je meer ontdekken over de tentoongestelde werken en andere strips uit dit tijdperk.

Exhibition Graphic Sapphic; lesbian comics and cartoons from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom from the 1970s to the 1990s opens on 13 April at IHLIA LGBTI Heritage in Amsterdam. 

On April 13 the exhibition >Grapphic Sapphic opens at IHLIA LGBTI Heritage. The exhibition zooms in on lesbian comics and cartoons from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom from the 1970s to the 1990s and on 13 April it opens with a roundtable discussion with four pioneers from those eras. The exhibition takes place at IHLIA on the third floor of Oosterdokskade 143 in Amsterdam until July 9. 

This exhibition takes visitors back to that time, showcasing comic strips and cartoons from IHLIA’s collection and the personal archives of the artists, original artwork, clips with some of the artists talking about their work and the context that facilitated it, as well as other objects and interactive elements that help bring the comics to life.

The exhibition is curated by Vasiliki Belia (PhD candidate at Maastricht University) as part of the research project Redrawing feminism: graphic narrative engagements with the feminist past, supported by the NWO. During the opening, Belia will engage in a roundtable conversation with Carla Schrama, Kate Charlesworth, Peti Buchel and Sjuul Deckwitz. 

• Carla Schrama is a social and youth worker with a home on Texel. She was active within feminist activist circles in the 1970s and 1980s and is one of the founders of women’s cafe Saarein. She is also one of the creators of the comic book Calla & Lucy Go West.
• Kate Charlesworth is a cartoonist, graphic novelist and illustrator based in Edinburgh. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including Manchester Evening News, New Scientist Magazine and The Guardian. She is the co-author of the graphic novel Sally Heathcote: Suffragette (2014) and author of the graphic history Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide (2019). 
• Peti Buchel is a cartoonist, graphic novelist, illustrator and artist. Her life moves between Amsterdam and Polranny, Ireland. Her work is wide-ranging, including comics, graphic novels and drawing books. She is also a board member of online museum www.vrouwenvoornulater.nl that focuses on the second feminist wave in the Netherlands.
• Sjuul Deckwitz is a writer and a poet, but she has always drawn, and she has created magazine articles and books where cartoons and drawings accompany the texts. She was very active herself in the feminist lesbian scene of Amsterdam in the 1970s and 1980s and her work has been published extensively in Lust & Gratie. Her books include novels, poetry collections, short story collections, and comics.

The speakers will take you back in time to talk about the context in which their creations were created and how they used their work to make lesbian lives, relationships, cultures and communities visible and challenge stereotypes about lesbians.  

The roundtable discussion ties in with the exhibition, which features comics and cartoons from IHLIA’s collection and illustrators’ personal archives. It also features clips in which the cartoonists talk about their work and its context, as well as other objects and interactive elements that make the comics come to life.  

The exhibition also shows how these drawings reflected the changing social and political landscape and helped lesbians explore their own identity and relationship to other lhbtiq+ groups, with a healthy dose of humor. 

In a specially set-up reading corner, you can discover more about the works on display and other comics from this era.
