In het kader van de expositie >Graphic Sapphic: Lesbische comics en cartoons in de jaren 70 – 90 uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Nederland, nu te zien bij IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, vertoont IHLIA de documentaire NO STRAIGHT LINES (2021, regie Vivian Kleiman).

Waar de expositie zich richt op de opkomst van lesbische stripboeken in Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk, voegt deze vertoning een perspectief op de ontwikkeling van queer comics in de Verenigde Staten toe.

De film, die in 2021 op het Outfest Los Angeles de Grand Jury Prize in ontvangst mocht nemen, laat zien hoe vijf pionierende cartoonisten, inmiddels alom gelauwerde personen, queer onderwerpen zoals de aidscrisis, uit de kast komen, de openstelling van het huwelijk, en de raakvlakken tussen seksuele identiteit, gender, ras en disability in beeld hebben gebracht.

Op humoristische wijze verbeelden ze wat het betekent om queer te zijn in alledaagse contexten in een altijd veranderende wereld. De documentaire stelt zowel hun werk als de wisselwerking met hun persoonlijke levens centraal.

De kunstenaars

• Alison Bechdel: Bekend van de stripserie Dykes to watch out for, bestseller memoir Fun Home en natuurlijk – wat nu bekend staat als – de Bechdeltest.
• Rupert Kinnard: Maakte de eerste stripserie(s) over zwarte queer personages, The Brown Bomber en Diva Touché Flambé.
• Howard Cruse: Inmiddels overleden pionier die o.a. optekende hoe het was om homoseksueel te zijn in het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten tijdens de Burgerrechtenstrijd in Stuck Rubber Baby, in 1995 uitgegeven door DC Comics.
• Jen Camper: Libanees-Amerikaanse lesbische cartoonist, wier werk in verschillende tijdschriften en kranten heeft gestaan. Daarnaast is zij de oprichter van de ‘Queers and Comics’-conferentie.
• Mary Wings: In 1973 publiceerde Wings het underground lesbische stripboek Come Out Comix, dat bekend staat als het eerste Amerikaanse lesbische stripboek. Daarnaast schrijft ze lesbische detectiveverhalen.

Na afloop van de vertoning een nagesprek met onderzoeker Vasiliki Belia, PhD-kandidaat aan de Universiteit van Maastricht en curator van de tentoonstelling Graphic Sapphic.

As part of the exhibition >Graphic Sapphic: Lesbian Comics and Cartoons in the 1970s – 1990s from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, now on display at IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, IHLIA is screening the documentary NO STRAIGHT LINES (2021, directed by Vivian Kleiman).

Where the exhibition focuses on the rise of lesbian comics in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, this screening adds a perspective on the development of queer comics in the United States.

The film, which was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest Los Angeles in 2021, shows how 5 pioneering cartoonists, now widely lauded individuals, have portrayed queer issues such as the AIDS crisis, coming out, same-sex marriage, and the intersections between sexual identity, gender, race and disability.

In a playful and humorous way, they depict what it means to be queer in everyday contexts in an ever-changing world. The documentary focuses on both their work and its interaction with their personal lives.

The artists

• Alison Bechdel: Known for the comic series Dykes to watch out for, bestselling memoir Fun Home and, of course, – what is now known as – the Bechdel test.
• Rupert Kinnard: Created the first comic book series(s) about black queer characters, The Brown Bomber and Diva Touché Flambé.
• Howard Cruse: An inspiration for many after him who, among other things, chronicled what it was like to be gay in the Southern United States during the Civil Rights struggle in Stuck Rubber Baby, published by DC Comics in 1995.
• Jen Camper: Lebanese-American lesbian cartoonist whose work has appeared in several magazines and newspapers. She is also the founder of the “Queers and Comics” conference.
• Mary Wings: In 1973, Wings published the underground lesbian comic book Come Out Comix, known as the first American lesbian comic book. She also writes lesbian detective stories.

Following the screening, a discussion with researcher Vasiliki Belia, PhD candidate at Maastricht University and curator of the exhibition Graphic Sapphic.
