Sinds het begin van de aidsepidemie in de Verenigde Staten en Europa worden er verhalen verteld over de manier waarop het virus gemeenschappen heeft getroffen. Ook nu, ruim veertig jaar na de eerste diagnoses, worden er nog veel romans geschreven en documentaires, films en televisieseries gemaakt over hiv en aids. Veel van deze verhalen gaan over witte homomannen in verstedelijkte gebieden in de Verenigde Staten en West-Europa. Dit roept de vraag op: welke verhalen zijn er nog meer?

Voor het Tijdschrift voor genderstudies verzamelden Looi van Kessel (Universiteit Leiden) en Jesse van Amelsvoort (Universiteit van Amsterdam) onderzoek naar intersectionele verhalen over hiv en aids. In een themanummer beschrijven verschillende onderzoekers de verhalen van mensen die vaak vergeten worden. Om de publicatie van dit nummer te vieren organiseert Tijdschrift voor genderstudies in samenwerking met IHLIA een symposium: Op zoek naar intersectionele verhalen over hiv en aids.

Tijdens het symposium zullen verschillende auteurs vertellen over hun bijdragen in het tijdschrift. Ook zullen we stilstaan bij de verhalen die via het IHLIA-archief verteld worden over hiv en aids in Nederland. Tenslotte wordt tijdens het symposium de fictieve documentaire Un pète au casque (1997) van Greg Rowe vertoond. Deze film is gemaakt als voorlichtingsfilm om de realiteit van hiv op het Franse platteland onder de aandacht te brengen.

Save the Date: Looking for Intersectional Narratives of HIV and AIDS

Since the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic in the United States and Europe, people have been telling stories about the way in which the virus has affected communities. Also now, over forty years since the first diagnoses, many novels, films and tv-series are produced about HIV and AIDS. Many of these stories, however, narrate the experiences of white gay men in the inner cities of the United States and Europe. This begs the question: which other stories are out there?

For Tijdschrift voor genderstudies (Dutch Journal of Gender Studies), Looi van Kessel (Leiden University) and Jesse van Amelsvoort (University of Amsterdam) collected research on intersectional stories of HIV and AIDS. In a special issue of the journal, various scholars discuss the stories of communities that that are often neglected in the dominant storytelling. To celebrate the publication of this issue, Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies and IHLIA are jointly organizing a symposium: Looking for Intersectional Narratives of HIV and AIDS.

During the symposium, various contributors to the issue will discuss their research. We will also dive into IHLIA’s archives to reflect on the stories that have been told in the Netherlands. We conclude the symposium with the screening of the fictional documentary Un pète au cascque (1997), by Greg Rowe; an educational film that sought to foreground the realities of living with HIV on the French countryside.
