Gevoed door vrouwen- en homo-emancipatie en de opmars van feministische en lhbtiq+-pers, werden comics en cartoons met lesbische inhoud steeds prominenter in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Nederland van de jaren 70 tot de jaren 90.

Deze expositie neemt de bezoekers mee terug naar die tijd en toont strips en cartoons uit de collectie van IHLIA en de persoonlijke archieven van de tekenaars. Daarnaast zijn clips te zien waarin de tekenaars over hun werk en de context vertellen waarbinnen het tot stand kwam, evenals andere objecten en interactieve elementen waardoor de comics tot leven komen.

Bezoekers krijgen de mogelijkheid te zien hoe comics en cartoons gebruikt werden om lesbische levens, relaties, culturen en gemeenschappen zichtbaar te maken, stereotypes over lesbiennes uit te dagen en feministische en pro-lhbtiq+-ideologie te verspreiden.

Ook toont de expositie hoe deze tekeningen het veranderende maatschappelijke en politieke landschap reflecteerden en lesbiennes hielpen om hun eigen identiteit en relatie tot andere lhbtiq+-groeperingen, met een gezonde dosis humor, te onderzoeken.

In een speciaal daarvoor ingerichte leeshoek kan je meer ontdekken over de tentoongestelde werken en andere strips uit dit tijdperk.

De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door Vasiliki Belia (PhD-kandidaat aan de Maastricht University) als onderdeel van het onderzoeksproject Redrawing feminism: graphic narrative engagements with the feminist past, ondersteund door het NWO.

Fueled by the women’s and the gay liberation movements, as well as the rise of feminist and LGBTQI press, comics and cartoons with lesbian content proliferated in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands from the 1970s till the 1990s. This exhibition takes visitors back to that time, showcasing comic strips and cartoons from IHLIA’s collection and the personal archives of the artists, original artwork, clips with some of the artists talking about their work and the context that facilitated it, as well as other objects and interactive elements that help bring the comics to life.

Visitors will have the chance to see how comics and cartoons were used to make lesbian lives, relationships, cultures, and communities visible, challenge stereotypes about lesbians and disseminate feminist and LGBTQI ideas. The exhibition, moreover, shows how these works reflected on the changing fashions and politics of those times, and helped lesbians negotiate their identities and relationship to other LGBTQI groups, make fun of themselves and fight for their rights.

A reading corner is included, where visitors can delve deeper into the works exhibited and many more works of that time.
