Pablo Lerma, die eerder bij IHLIA voor de tentoonstelling > It Doesn’t Stop at Images in de afgelopen drie jaar onderzoek heeft gedaan naar het concept van mannelijkheid, ver­diepte zich in vloei­stoffen en voch­tig­heid in het ar­chi­tec­tu­rale eco­sys­teem van het > Kunstfort.

Door het fort heen dienden delen van de be­tonnen struc­tuur als een middel om re­gen­water te fil­teren. Voort­bou­wend op de la­tente energieën van de plek be­dacht hij een ver­haal over voch­tig­heid, ge­deeld door mi­li­tairen die mo­ge­lijk het Kunstfort hebben be­woond.

Voor deze in­ter­ventie dook Lerma in de Gerrit Jan Voscol­lectie van IHLIA LGBTI Heri­tage. Gerrit Jan Vos ver­za­melde on­ge­veer 4000 fo­to’s van voor­na­me­lijk mannen in uni­form. De meeste fo­to’s da­teren van rond de Tweede We­reld­oorlog. Van som­mige van de vriend­schappen op de fo­to’s, zou de on­der­toon ge­zien kunnen worden als ho­mo-ero­tisch of ho­mo­sek­sueel.

Pablo Lerma is een queer kun­ste­naar, do­cent en uit­gever, die on­der­zoek als uit­gangs­punt neemt. Zijn focus ligt op vi­suele ar­chieven en in­for­meel ma­te­riaal rond the­ma’s als het col­lec­tieve ge­heugen, re­pre­sen­tatie en queer­ness, via beeld en tekst. Zijn on­der­zoek neemt ver­schil­lende vormen aan, van fo­to­gra­fi­sche in­stal­la­ties tot pu­bli­ca­ties.

Dit werk kwam tot stand in sa­men­wer­king met IHLIA LGBTI Heri­tage en gast-co-cu­rator Jim van Geel.

Homing in on liq­uids and hu­midity in the fortress’ ar­chi­tec­tural ecosystem and building upon its la­tent en­er­gies, Pablo Lerma fab­u­lates a story about hu­midity shared be­tween mil­i­tary men who might have in­hab­ited the > Kunstfort.

Lerma has previously researched the concept of masculinity at IHLIA for the exhibition > It Doesn’t Stop at Images in the past three years.

For this in­ter­ven­tion Pablo Lerma dove into the Gerrit Jan Vos col­lec­tion of IHLIA LGBTI Her­itage. Gerrit Jan Vos col­lected about 4000 photos of mostly men in uni­form. Many of the photos are dated around World War II. Some of the com­pan­ion­ships shown in the photos could be in­ter­preted as having a ho­mo­erotic or ho­moso­cial un­der­tone.

Pablo Lerma is a queer re­search-based artist, ed­u­cator and pub­lisher. His focus is on vi­sual archives and non­formal ma­te­rials while dealing with no­tions of col­lec­tive memory, rep­re­sen­ta­tion, and queer­ness through image and text. The re­search takes on var­ious forms, from pho­to­graphic in­stal­la­tions to pub­li­ca­tions.

This in­ter­ven­tion came about in col­lab­o­ra­tion with IHLIA LGBTI Her­itage and guest co-­cu­rator Jim van Geel.
