Trans in Amsterdam

Photo series by Jasmine de Vries on transgender organizations

Transgender Netwerk Nederland (TNN) is celebrating its tenth anniversary with the exhibition Trans in Amsterdam. A photo series about Amsterdam transgender organizations that each nominated someone from their audience to be portrayed.

Those portrayed pose in a place that has been important to themselves and the trans movement. In this way we show what connects and empowers trans people, where there has been collaboration and where recognition has been found. Thus pieces of history become visible that have been of vital importance to the transgender movement.

The photo series challenges viewers to empathize with their transgender neighbors. In addition, quotes are used to explain what the significance of those locations in Amsterdam has been for trans people. A glimpse into the local community unknown to many can dispel prejudices and reduce the distance between groups. It can also help people who are trans themselves and do not know where to go in the city.

Part of the exhibition is special public programming with activities where visitors can engage in conversation with individuals from various trans organizations.
