Memories of Gay Games Amsterdam 1998

25th anniversary of largest ever LGBTI+ event in Amsterdam

On August 1, 2023, it will be 25 years since the largest LGBTI+ event ever took place in Amsterdam. During Gay Games Amsterdam 1998, the city turned pink. This will be commemorated in Pride Week with a mini exhibition at IHLIA.

During Gay Games Amsterdam 1998, tens of thousands of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals from all over the world came to Amsterdam to participate in dozens of sports and cultural events. Internationally, the Amsterdam Gay Games is considered the most successful Gay Games ever with more than 3,000 volunteers, nearly 16,000 participants and a total of about 275,000 visitors.

For the first time, the story of Gay Games Amsterdam 1998 is told in the run-up to the 25th anniversary. What made the Amsterdam Gay Games so special internationally? What revolutionary changes has the event led to?

In the exhibition, special objects are linked to funny, moving and sometimes revealing memories and photos. View the unique Frau Antje costume and all kinds of other Gay Games memorabilia in the exhibition on the IHLIA Plaza.
