Inspiring stories of those who have paved the way for LGBTIQ+ individuals
IHLIA is proud to present the exhibition With Pride: Rainbow History & You.
On 11 October it is Coming-out Day, when we will open the exhibition developed especially for students. We would therefore like to invite them – together with their GSAs, for example – to come and take a look, but school leaders, mentors and parents/carers are of course also very welcome.
About With Pride
With Pride is the platform for secondary education about lhbtiq history in the Netherlands. In one hundred windows , the With Pride website focuses on the story behind the struggle for emancipation and social acceptance
Drawing on the IHLIA archive, With Pride shows that individuals and organisations from the lhbtiq community have shaped society through self-organisation, lobbying, action and provocation and have left their mark on 20th-century Dutch history.
Sexual diversity in education goes beyond focusing on this topic in biology lessons, social studies lessons, or information provided by the COC. It is also about inclusion: representation of lhbtiq individuals and topics in the curriculum.
This is important because within the curriculum, in the larger Dutch society and in the media, these people and topics are still covered too one-sidedly and too little.
Invisibility perpetuates ignorance, where ignorance leads to assumptions and stereotypes that often have racist and sexist origins, leading to discrimination and insecurity.
By creating visibility for these issues, you can start the conversation, supported by the strength and wisdom of historical LGBTIQ+ individuals.
Rainbow History & You
The exhibition features 10 highlights and videos of six young people talking about how rainbow history inspires them.
