What remains out of sight when we look at the history and collections of museums and archives? And more importantly, why? In this exhibition, we bring to the fore stories that have long remained invisible. Buiten beeld? invites you to look again – at objects, at archives, at collections, and at the people behind these stories.

This exhibition is part of the fifth edition of Queer History Month in the Netherlands (in Dutch), a tradition that began in the United States in 1994 and has since spread around the world. By introducing this annual tradition in the Netherlands, IHLIA, together with participating organizations, brings to life the legacy and achievements of the LGBTQI+ community.

Especially for this anniversary exhibition, five cultural institutions have contributed a queer object from their collection, which is situated here in a broader historical context by exhibiting it with archival material from IHLIA LGBTI Heritage’s collection.

In this way, we bring together knowledge from the queer community and the cultural field. By presenting these objects and documents side by side, five diverse stories are created. This exhibition shows that it is important to keep looking, not only at what is already in the picture, but precisely also at the wealth that lives on the margins. In order to make the invisible visible.
