50 years of Stonewall

From big riot to global movement

New York police raided the Stonewall Inn on Saturday night, June 28, 1969. The reactions of the gay café’s visitors and the public outside showed that they no longer put up with it: they fought back.

The police completely misjudged ‘those sissies’ and struggled for days to get the neighborhood under control. The riots lasted until the following Wednesday. They would drastically change the lives of the pink minority worldwide.

With 50 Years of Stonewall, IHLIA looks back on these illustrious days that gave wings to the LGBTI emancipation movement. From organizing the first Pride march in New York to abolishing discriminatory articles of law in Western Europe, including the Netherlands.

But the exhibition also asks the question: what next? As of 2019, there is still plenty to fight. The dynamics of the movement and the oppression of LGBTI people on a global level will not diminish over the next 50 years.
