bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 22 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 312-336
samenvatting: In this autoethnographic speech to a gathering of the Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA), the author offers a philosophical foundation for a decolonial, queer, and intersexional approach to religious and thea/ological education. The author draws about Black queer cultural production, Black feminist thought, decolonial discourses from around the world, historical analysis, biblicalexegesis, and radical religious thought to critique the division between religious education and theological education and formulate a philosophy of liberatory religious education.

It's a Kiki!: Developmental benefits of the Kiki scene for Black gay/bisexual/transgender adolescents/emerging adults  / Gary W. Harper ...[et al.].

Journal of LGBT Youth, 19 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 31-52
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 19 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 31-52
samenvatting: Younger members of the House and Ball Community (HBC) have created an emerging social scene called "Kiki" that has shared elements with the HBC. Given the growing popularity of the Kiki scene in urban communities with large numbers of Black gay, bisexual, and transgender (GBT) adolescents and emerging adults, it is important to understand the developmental benefits of the Kiki scene. We conducted individual in-depth interviews with 30 GBT adolescents and emerging adults (ages 15-24) who attended Kiki-related events and 15 older opinion leaders affiliated with the HBC. Participants described how the Kiki scene provides them with a range of supportive and affirming functions and offers a place where they can achieve important developmental milestones. The results clustered into three primary thematic areas of development: Executive Functioning Development, Social-Emotional Development, and Physical and Emotional Safety during Development. Within each of these thematic areas are sub-themes that further explicate the ways in which these functions are supported. We believe this to be one of the first papers exclusively focused on the positive aspects of the Kiki scene for adolescent and emerging adult development, and we encourage other researchers to further explore this emerging socializing force and its potential benefits to development.

Perceived HIV Invulnerability and PrEP Knowledge and Attitudes among Black Sexual Minority Women  / Shemeka Thorpe ...[et al.].

American Journal of Sexuality Education, 17 (2022) 3, p. 400-413
bron: American Journal of Sexuality Education jaargang: 17 (2022) 3 , p. 400-413
samenvatting: Black women have disproportionate rates of HIV compared to women of all other racial groups. The purpose of this analysis was to investigate perceived HIV risk, HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing behaviors, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) knowledge and attitudes among Black sexual minority women (SMW) and examine differences based on their history of male sex partners. Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the Generations Study. This analysis used a sample of N = 149 participants who identified as Black cisgender women. Results showed Black SMW with a history of male sex partners reported a higher perceived risk of contracting HIV and significantly more frequent HIV and STI testing than those without a history of male sex partners. Overall, most of the sample was not familiar with PrEP, but one-third had favorable attitudes toward it, and half felt like they did not know enough about PrEP to form an opinion. Implications for culturally relevant public health campaigns and comprehensive sexuality education that integrate PrEP are included.

White Trash and the Queer South: Doing Sex Badly in Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina  / Jude Hayward-Jansen.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 29 (2023) 4 (oct), p. 477-500
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 29 (2023) 4 (oct), p. 477-500
samenvatting: Situating itself in the crosshairs of critical whiteness studies, queer studies, and Black studies, this essay considers the literary production of the (poor) white trash subject in the intersection of two moments of racial upheaval - the civil rights era of the US South and the "focus on the family" during the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s - in which whiteness was under siege. Taking its cue from Toni Morrison's articulation of the white imaginary and W. E. B. Du Bois's history of the (Black) and white working class, this article looks at representations of queerness in Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina to (1) understand the ways in which poor whiteness solidifies through queer moments of "bad" sex; and (2) reveal the ways in which "bad sex" retards white subjectivity/progressivity.
