samenvatting: A richly evocative collection of photographs by internationally renowned photographer Kike Arnal, Bordered Lives seeks to push back against the transphobic caricatures that have perpetuated discrimination against the transgender community in Mexico. In the highly personal profiles that make up Bordered Lives, including the first transgender couple to be married in Mexico and one of the country's most high-profile transgender entertainers, Arnal looks at seven individuals in and around Mexico City. Moving in its honesty, this book challenges many notions of sexuality.

Feminist Participatory Action Research with Transgender Communities : Fostering the Practice of Ethical and Empowering Research Designs  / Anneliese A. Singh, Kate Richmond, Theodore R. Burnes.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 14 (2013) 3 (jul-sep), p. 93-104
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 14 (2013) 3 (jul-sep), p. 93-104
samenvatting: Research on topics related to transgender people in psychology has gradually increased over the last 2 decades, with a noted increase in scholarship over the last 5 years (Bockting & Coleman, 2007; DeSutter, Kira, Verschoor, & Hotimsky, 2002; Devor, 2004). However, there has been less attention to the use of participatory action research (PAR) frameworks with transgender people and communities. This article proposes specific strategies for feminist researchers engaging in PAR studies with transgender people and communities that are grounded in feminist theory. These strategies are summarized in a checklist that feminist researchers may use throughout the duration of a study's activities with transgender individuals and communities. Transgender activism in Russia  / Yana Sitnikova.

uitgave: [S.l. : s.n., 2013 - 10 p.
onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. rechtspositie
  2. transgender
samenvatting: LGBT issues in Russia receive a lot of attention from the media worldwide. However not all groups that are included in LGBT, or even broader LGBTQI, abbreviation are covered equally. While problems faced by Russian lesbian and gay people are considered in detail, queer, bisexual, transgender and intersex issues remain almost invisible. This article is aimed at filling this gap by describing the situation that Russian trans* people live in and our struggle as trans* activists. I will start with the current trans* related legislation, then I will move to the history of Russian trans* movement. I will proceed to the current debates among trans* activists and within trans* community as a whole. Then I will look at possibilities of cooperation with other social movements, participation of trans* people in politics and separately standing trans* organizations. I will mention the attitude of people from trans* community to activism and the type of activism that I call non-political. I will conclude with discussing the participation of Russian trans* activists in the international trans* movement and explain why this article is one of the few that I write in English.

'Sitting. With a Candle? Up My Ass!' : A Portrait of Harmodius in Exile  / Dominic Johnson.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 695-700
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 695-700
samenvatting: 'Sitting. With a Candle? Up My Ass!' explores the archive of the Bay Area photographer David Greene, focusing firstly on Shameless (1974), a series of portraits of transgender people, queers, and people in drag, often posed candidly in domestic and other domestic settings. It zooms into Greene's work to draw out the story of the forgotten genderfuck poet and activist Harmodius in Exile - Greene's lover and peer- posing archival research as an access point to concealed or 'minor' histories of lesbian, gay, and transgender life in San Francisco in the 1970s. In my analysis, Harmodius's strategic maximalism- captured so evocatively in Greene's portraits and evoked in Harmodius's own poetry (cited in the title)- is both a political tool and a technique of whimsy, a gesture of serious play that stages the poet's commitment to aesthetic, political, and corporeal self-fashioning.

Transtextuality (Senate Bill 48) : Recovering and Reimagining Trans Histories  / Kelly Besser.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 673-675
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 673-675
samenvatting: Katie Herzog's Transtextuality (Senate Bill 48) is a collection of paintings that functions as a record of transgender history. Herzog's portraits of trans people of letters point to the work we must perform to create documentation of our communities when no trace of our existence shows up in the archives. Her project engages the transformative educational potential of the archives to record, remember, and reinvent our trans histories while it builds imaginings of future articulations of our records.

Trans Intelligentsia : A Western Pictorial?  / Zowie Davy.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 676-678
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 676-678
samenvatting: Katie Herzog's Transtextuality (Senate Bill 48), an installation 'depicting 48 portraits of transgender men and women of letters' took on the mammoth task of displaying portraits of trans pioneers who represent transgender intelligentsia. The celebration of her Western ?sitters? is an impressive display, and their academic work has no doubt contributed vast and wide-reaching insights into mine and the lives of some of my trans sisters, brothers, and others. However, her wall of fame, while potentially innocent in its creation, neglects the class, ethnicity/race, sexuality, and other situational aspects of trans writers' lives that may have impacted the performative aspects of knowledge production about (trans) gender beyond the Western imaginary. Although this trans celebration may feel subversive because it challenges the status quo of those whose knowledge counts vis-à-vis cisgender people, we must be constantly drawn to ask, does the subversion suppress others?

Radical Living Archives and Trans* Embodiment : Shu Lea Cheang's Brandon  / Abbra Kotlarczyk.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 683-688
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 683-688
samenvatting: Multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang's Brandon was supported by the Guggenheim Museum New York in 1995 as a multiauthor/multi-institutional collaboration. Created in response to the news of the Nebraska murder of transgender youth Brandon Teena in 1993, the project exists as a feminist hypertext and as such can be regarded as a living archive of transgender embodiment. Due to the work's current offline status, questions arise as to how it might be factored beyond its material presence, as a temporal placeholder for radical and affective archiving. Major sociocultural factors such as the introduction of the information super highway at the time of the project's creation allow for a topographical look at how digital codes and online interfacing factor as potential forms of emancipation regarding transgender embodiment and performativity.
