Sex Changes : The Politics of Transgenderism.  /

Pat Califia.San Francisco, CA: Cleis Press, 2003 - XLVII, 299 p.
uitgave: San Francisco, CA: Cleis Press, 2003 - XLVII, 299 p.
annotatie: First Edition: 1997; title on cover: Sex Changes: Transgender Politics.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Sex Changes: The Politics of Transgenderism is Califia's meticulously researched book based on an astute reading of the available literature and in-depth interviews with gender transgressors who "opened their lives, minds, hearts, and bedrooms to the gaze of strangers." Writing about both male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals, Califia examines the lives of early transgender pioneers like Christine Jorgenson, Jan Morris, Renee Richards and Mark Rees, contemporary transgender activists like Leslie Feinberg and Kate Bornstein, and partners of transgendered people like Minnie Bruce Pratt. Califia scrutinizes feminist resistance to transsexuals occupying women's space, the Christian Right's backlash against transsexuals, and the appropriation of the berdache and other differently-gendered by gay historians to prove the universal existance of homosexuality. Finally, Sex Changes explores the future of gender.

The gendercator, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the blogosphere  / Jessica Lawless.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 15 (2009) 1, p. 131-151
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 15 (2009) 1 , p. 131-151
samenvatting: This essay is a collection of statements, thoughts and opinions that exploded across the internet in response to a controversy that occurred during the 2007 LGBT film festival season. Catherine Crouch's short, The Gendercator, is the first film to be accepted and then removed from San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival, the longest running festival of its kind. The censorship of the film due to community pressure, and the transphobic storyline Crouch created raises central questions of community and identity/post identity politics - personal experience versus group representation, strategies for creating institutional spaces where queer identity formation can both develop and change, and problems that occur when grassroots organizations gain cultural cache that allows mobility for some but not for others. I became involved when I was invited to sit on a panel with Crouch and others following the screening of The Gendercator at Outfest in Los Angeles. Rather than offer a personal account of the panel, a reading of the film, or analysis of the varying viewpoints and decisions made surrounding The Gendercator, I have relied on "blogosphere" and cyber world to tell this story. They rivaling voices from the LGBTQIA community beautifully convey all of the salient, ironic, painful, political and humorous positions as is. I have added my own positioning on key issues along the way. These are in the footnotes rather than the main text. This is not a strategy to perform the impossible act of journalistic "neutrality," but a conceptual move to contribute to the already loud and disharmonious cacophony surrounding The Gendercator. My contributions can be read as post blog postings, extending the web based conversation into another dimension, material based text.

The School-Based Lives of LGBT Youth in the Republic of Ireland  / Finn C. G. Reygan.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 6 (2009) 1, p. 80-89
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 6 (2009) 1 , p. 80-89
samenvatting: There is a dearth of research on the experience of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth in schools in the Republic of Ireland. The current study assessed the school-based experiences of twenty five (N = 25) participants in the BeLonG To LGBT youth group in Dublin city using a mixed design survey instrument. The majority (n = 19) of respondents reported experiencing problems in school related to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity; eleven (n = 11) respondents reported that homophobia impacted negatively on their studies while at school; and one fifth of respondents (n = 5) left school early, citing negative reactions to their sexual orientation or gender identity as one of the main reasons they left. The majority (n = 18) of respondents did not consider their school a safe space to be LGBT. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

La atención a la salud en Brasil a partir de la percepción de travestis, transexuales y transgéneros = Attitudes and Perceptions of the Brazilian Public Health System by Transgender Individuals  / Kátia Bones Rocha ... [et al.].

uitgave:
onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. transgender

Transpeople, Transprejudice and Pathologization : A Seven-Country Factor Analytic Study  / Sam Winter ... [et al.].

International Journal of Sexual Health, 21 (2009) 2 (april-june), p. 96-118
bron: International Journal of Sexual Health jaargang: 21 (2009) 2 (april-june), p. 96-118
samenvatting: Eight hundred and forty one undergraduate students in seven countries (China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, United Kingdom and United States) completed a questionnaire examining perceptions of transwomen (on a transacceptance-transprejudice continuum). The aim was to identify factors underlying transacceptance-transprejudice, and relationships among them. Five factors were identified (Mental-Illness, Denial-Women, Social-Rejection, Peer-Rejection, Sexual-Deviance). Mental-Illness (the belief that transwomen were mentally ill) was the most powerful underlying factor, linked to other aspects of transprejudice. We discuss implications for the debate on depathologization of gender variance, and for transprejudice worldwide. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Varieties of Transgender/Transsexual Lives and Their Relationship with Transphobia  / Emilia Lombardi.

Journal of Homosexuality, 56 (2009) 8 (nov), p. 977-992
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 56 (2009) 8 (nov), p. 977-992
samenvatting: The conceptualization of gender variant populations within studies have consisted of imposed labels and a diversity of individual identities that preclude any attempt at examining the variations found among gender variant populations, while at the same time creating artificial distinctions between groups that may not actually exist. Data were collected from 90 transgender/transsexual people using confidential, self-administered questionnaires. Factors like age of transition, being out to others, and participant's race and class were associated with experiences of transphobic life events. Discrimination can have profound impact on transgender/transsexual people's lives, but different factors can influence one's experience of transphobia. Further studies are needed to examine how transphobia manifests, and how gender characteristics impact people's lives. [ Copies are available at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/haworth-journals.asp ]

Transsexuals in the Middle East Await the Wave of Change  / Suad Hamada.

Wip 02-09-2009
bron: Wip 02-09-2009
samenvatting: Hell is what most Arabs think of when the word 'transsexual' comes into any conversation since many mistake it with homosexuality, which is a sin in Islam. Most transsexuals prefer to remain anonymous since in some Arab countries they could face jail sentences for dressing or acting like the opposite sex. Many, especially men who feel trapped in the body of a woman, keep their problems hidden to avoid being punished or killed by their families. It is far easier for a woman to have a sex change to become a man than visa-versa. A man who becomes a woman is seen to have dishonored the family.
