TERFism, Zionism, and Right-Wing Annihilationism: Toward an Internationalist Genealogy of Extinction Phobia  / C. Heike Schotten.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 9 (2022) 3 (aug), p. 334-364
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 9 (2022) 3 (aug), p. 334-364
samenvatting: This article traces the emergence of what the author calls predation TERFism to the development of US Jewish-identified feminism and, in particular, Zionist lesbian separatism. This historical connection is reflected in the rhetorical and ideological similarities between predation TERFism and Zionism, both of which are defined by an "extinction phobia" that confuses oppressor and oppressed, presenting the subordinate party as capable of eliminating the dominant one. This extinction phobia transforms into "right-wing annihilationism" via a dehumanization of the subordinate party as innately harmful and therefore requiring elimination; hence the hallmark predation TERF abjection of trans women as rapists of cis women and the Zionist abjection of Palestinians as "savage and/or "terrorist." These connections can be obscured by the siloization of social justice movement work in the United States, wherein anti-colonial and anti-imperial organizing is often separated from organizing for gender and reproductive justice and sexual freedom. Recognizing the continuities, however - whether historical, material, or ideological - between predation TERFism and Zionism offers useful lessons for understanding not only the power of the contemporary global anti-trans resurgence, but also how we might build solidaristic, anti-colonial movements to defeat it.

Assessing familial and social factors of life satisfaction in Pakistani transgender and non-binary individuals: implications for counseling  / Shameem Fatima, Noreen Fatima, Amina Muazzam

Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling, 16 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 67-85
bron: Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling jaargang: 16 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 67-85
samenvatting: The objectives of the study were to assess the associations of family rejection and perceived social support with life satisfaction in Pakistani non-binary transgender individuals and to assess whether these associations were moderated by demographics. Results based on a sample of 105 Pakistani non-binary transgender individuals showed that family rejection was a negative predictor while social support from friends and a significant other was a positive predictor of life satisfaction. Additionally, duration of living with family independently predicted life satisfaction as well as moderated the family rejection-life satisfaction link. Implications of findings for counseling are discussed.

Close Encounters of the Anxious Kind: Notes on Transfeminine Exclusion from Sports and Dating  / Tristan Venturi.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 10 (2023) 2 (may), p. 133-152
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 10 (2023) 2 (may), p. 133-152
samenvatting: This essay considers the shared ideological foundation underlying transfeminine exclusion from sports and transfeminine exclusion from dating. While biological advantage and sexual preference are often cited as indisputable, legitimate, and scientifically supported criteria for prohibiting transgender participation in these two domains, the author argues that both sports and dating operate according to fallacious cisheteronormative assumptions that work to ostracize sex/gender-transgressive bodies through three main practices: the exercise of suspicion, the legitimization of inspection, and the criminalization of nondisclosure.
