Gender, Sexuality and Communications : Towards Strengthening the Leadership of Queer, Young Women in Francophone West Africa  / Mariam Armisen.

Queer African Youth Networking Centre (QAYN) (2012) (oct)
bron: Queer African Youth Networking Centre (QAYN) (2012) (oct)
samenvatting: The Activist School on Gender, Sexuality and Communication: towards Strengthening the Leadership of Queer, Young Women in Francophone West Africa took place in Burkina Faso from 24 to 28 September 2012. This training was a collaboration between the Queer African Youth Networking Centre (QAYN) and Isis International. This project, the first of its kind in the sub-region brought together eight queer, young activists from Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, and Senegal. The workshop was led by two facilitators, Lalen Vela from Isis International and Mariam Armisen of QAYN. A rapporteur from Ouagadougou documented the five days training. The overall goal of the training was to deepen individual and organizational agency. The theoretical part of the training used a participatory approach to promote collective work and team spirit. Each day of training had a particular but interlinked theme: day one began with a feminist critical analysis of oppression with a focus on the body, gender, sexuality and power; day two focused on deepening participants knowledge and skills in movement building; the third day focused on organizational development based on feminist leadership principles and the use of media and communications strategies and tools for social change; the fourth day supported capacity development with a focus on personal safety and well-being of the activists and the fifth was dedicated to the development of a collective action plan.

samenvatting: The case studies in this report show young LBQWSW women are leading new ways of organizing that are not based on a single issue, and they are proving that such efforts are possible and are happening in small communities around Africa. What these leaders need to expand the impact and scope of their work is the meaningful engagement and support of diverse stakeholders to join these efforts and together we have the potential to link local LBQWSW-led initiatives to social justice movement at local, national and regional levels, to eventually grow into a more inclusive social movement.

Do not wake up a sleeping lion : mapping the legal environment of LGBTQ persons in francophone West Africa  / Pierre Meyer ; transl. [from the French] by Moussa Toé.

samenvatting: The objective of the mapping of the legal environment is to take stock of the legal status of LGBTQ individuals in five West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d?Ivoire, Mali and Togo. Legal status means, first and foremost, the status of the legislation as regards the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ persons, but also the implementation of this legislation by tribunals, the police and the administration. The specific objectives include: Identify and analyze the legal standards likely to protect or, conversely, to discriminate LGBTQ persons; identify right violations, discriminations in the enjoyment and the exercise of the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ persons and organizations; make the connection between the status of the legislation and abuses and discriminations against LGBTQ individuals and organizations in order to identify the inadequacies of the legislations or in the implementation of these legislations; propose recommendations to improve on the legislations as regards their content and(or) their implementation.
