samenvatting: A survey was conducted among transsexual women to ask their opinion about the option of freezing sperm, before the start of any medical treatment. We received responses from 121 women. The vast majority feel that the availability of freezing sperm should be discussed and offered by the medical world. A smaller majority would indeed have frozen their own sperm, or at least have seriously considered doing so, if this had been an option. Most women in favour of the idea of sperm freezing were under 40 years of age and identified as lesbian or bisexual. A minority of respondents expressed concern about possible risks of genetically transmitting transsexualism to their children, or considered the whole idea of sperm freezing to be in conflict with their female core identity. Many women expressed regret that they could not become pregnant and have a child themselves.

samenvatting: This paper examines cultural and social meanings associated with semen, along with related issues of unprotected receptive anal intercourse, HIV seroconversion, treatment optimism and viraemia. The findings are derived from qualitative interviews conducted with 12 HIV-positive young gay men and 12 HIV-negative counterparts who participated in a prospective cohort study in Vancouver, Canada. Focussing on the narratives of young gay men, the analysis reveals a diverse range of knowledge, values and functions of semen, especially in relation to its exchange. Beliefs about semen appeared to differ by HIV serostatus and were linked with intimacy, identity and pleasure, particularly among the HIV-positive men. Against dominant representations of semen in relation to issues of loss, anxiety and infertility, this unique study sheds much needed light on its role within the cultural construction of sexuality among gay men. As such, these narratives are of direct importance to primary and secondary HIV prevention, including condom promotion and the development of rectal microbicides.

samenvatting: In this article I explore how transgender and cisgender participants in internet-mediated visual and print-based sexual cinematic discourse frame the construction of orgasms among trans masculine and other male-identified, female-assigned at birth, subjects. Specifically, I focus on the visual and linguistic platforms of amateur videos featuring trans men's genitals posted on XTube, a website that hosts user-submitted films as well as space for user commentary. Importantly, the 'visual' text of the film content articulates in productive and perhaps unexpected ways with the figurative dialogue of language used to frame the video as well as that deployed by posted responses to the film. Situating trans men's genitals as both discursively and phenomenologically managed alongside the privileging of the visual over the figurative I focus on employing frameworks of audience reception, how trans men and their sexual interlocutors,as either consumers of film or physical participants, both reproduce and destabilize hegemonic notions of maleness. Specifically, I consider how hegemonic notions of maleness extend to genital function and the politics of ejaculation and 'cum', or the bodily fluids produced peri and post orgasm, to reflect the ideological 'productivity of genitals' for trans subjects.

samenvatting: At the center in Ghent, male-to-female transsexual persons, denoted as transsexual women, are treated in a multidisciplinary approach, including cross-sex hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery for most. Hormone therapy with anti-androgens and estrogens is used in the majority of transsexual women. Current reproductive techniques can offer adult transsexual women the possibility of having genetically related children (De Sutter, 2001). They can store their sperm for long-termcryopreservation before undergoing hormonal therapy for future use in assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Sexual orientation of transsexual women may influence the future plans for using the frozen sperm.
