Queerly Turkish : Queer Masculinity and National Belonging in the Image of Zeki Müren  / Spencer Hawkins.

Popular Music and Society, 41 (2016) 2, p. 99-118
bron: Popular Music and Society jaargang: 41 (2016) 2 , p. 99-118
samenvatting: This article offers an explanation for the lasting appeal of Turkish cross-dressing singer Zeki Müren (1931-1996). His performances on stage, film, and television interweave avant-garde, modern, and old-fashioned elements. The success of these performances registers Turkish society's ambivalence about modernity, masculinity, and sexuality. Müren's queer performances conjure an imaginary public that spans the divisions within Turkish culture, such as that between nostalgia for the Ottoman past and aspirations for national belonging based on European models. The article concludes by examining some recent appropriations of Müren's image, to show that Müren continues to represent an imaginary, unified Turkish society.

samenvatting: Quilt #01-#30 presents a series of quilts-silkscreen printed fabrics (2013-ongoing), by Philipp Gufler. By combining text and image, Philipp Gufler's series of works refers to artists, writers, LGBTIQ+magazines and lost queer spaces, which are often omitted from the usual history books. The subjects that are central to Gufler's quilts are closely related to his own artistic practice and interests, but also his personal life.

Intimacy : new queer art from Berlin and beyond  / [curation & texts: Peter Rehberg, Apostolos Lampropoulos].

uitgave: [Berlin] : Schwules Museum, [2020] - [48] p.: ill.

thema:
  1. beeldende kunsten
  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: Intimacy is one of the central topics in queer art. Here, the relationship between the public and the private is expressed in a distinctive way. Even though it can be risky for queer minorities to make their intimate relations public, new forms and versions of intimacy have constantly evolved, especially in Berlin - with people finding ecstasy on the dancefloor, adventure in the darkroom, or tenderness in their polyamorous relationships. These realities are framed by medial and pharmacological developments. The digitization left its marks on the portrayal of queer intimacies, as well as the medical narratives of HIV/AIDS ? all the way to the current Covid 19 pandemic. The exhibition ?Intimacy? presents over 30 positions of queer contemporary art discussing these topics: photography, painting, sculptures, video installations and film.

Grayson Perry : Portrait of the Artist as a Young Girl  /

Wendy Jones.London: Chatto & Windus, 2006 - : ill.
uitgave: London: Chatto & Windus, 2006 - : ill.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Every inch of Grayson's childhood bedroom was covered with pictures of aeroplanes, and every surface with models. Fantasy took over his life, in a world of battles ruled by his teddy bear, Alan Measles. He grew up. And in 2003, an acclaimed ceramic artist, he accepted the Turner Prize as his alter-ego Clare, wearing his best dress, with a bow in his hair. Now he tells his own story, his voice beautifully caught by his friend, the writer Wendy Jones. Early childhood in Chelmsford, Essex is a rural Eden that ends abruptly with the arrival of his stepfather, leading to constant swerving between his parents' houses, and between boys' and women's clothes. But as Grayson enters art college and discovers the world of London squats and New Romanticism, he starts to find himself. At last he steps out as a potter and transvestite.

Our process of healing started ancestrally, and we are continuing the healing work that our ancestors did, with love and pain. We don't know where we are going but we know that our directions connected to the Moroccan dreams, to the migrants' hopes, to the depths of Africa and the ancestors of the world. This Archive is for healing, for us, for you, for the future and a world without borders. --- Kenza Mala Badi

Belonging : Portraits from LGBTQ Thailand  /

Steve McCurry.New York, NY: The New Press, 2021 - 152 p.: ill.
uitgave: New York, NY: The New Press, 2021 - 152 p.: ill.

samenvatting: Thailand has long had the reputation as one of the most gay-friendly destinations in Asia, particularly Bangkok with its nightlife and its relative openness and safety. While this may be true for tourists and expats, the idea of Thailand as a haven for LGBTQ people and for same-sex couples, heavily promoted by the tourist industry, does not necessarily extend to Thais themselves. While Thailand is home to the largest LGBTQ communities in Asia, the reality for them is less accepting. Discrimination and exclusion targeting LGBTQ people continues despite a nominally progressive stance on inclusion, and same-sex marriage remains illegal. Against this backdrop, McCurry's lushly colored photographs take us into the vibrant LGBTQ community in Bangkok, and this beautifully packaged, affordably priced book gives us a series of close to one hundred moving and intimate portraits of people who are no longer welcome in the community in which they grew up, but who have forged a new life and a new meaning of family in the queer community. Steve McCurry is the artist behind some of the most iconic images in contemporary photography. His 1984 portrait of Sharbat Gula (?the Afghan girl?) on the cover of National Geographic remains widely recognized to this day. Now McCurry turns his attention to Thailand as part of a series of photobooks on LGBTQ communities around the world.

Luigi Lucioni : Modern Light  /

Edited by Katie Wood Kirchhoff; essays by David Brody, Nancie Ravenel ...[et al.] ;New York, NY: Rizzoli Electa, 2022 - 159 p.: ill.
uitgave: New York, NY: Rizzoli Electa, 2022 - 159 p.: ill.
annotatie: Bibliogr.: p. 159.

samenvatting: This first comprehensive survey of the life and work of Luigi Lucioni (1900 1988) places him in the context of fellow Regionalist painters Grant Wood, Charles Sheeler, and Maxfield Parrish. Lucioni is known for meticulously rendered still lifes, landscapes, and arresting portraits drawn from his close-knit circle of queer New York artists and cultural figures, including Paul Cadmus, Jared French, George Platt Lynes, and Lincoln Kirstein. In the early 1930s, Lucioni discovered Vermont, whose landscapes reminded him of northern Italy. It was there that he met Electra Havemeyer Webb, who was to become his single most important patron. For more than 50 years, the New York City based artist spent every summer painting landscapes of trees, barns, and buildings in Vermont with sharply observed realism and a cool, precise style. Key scholars examine Lucioni's oeuvre, materials, techniques, and his role in American modernism.
