Heterosexual identity and heterosexism: recognizing privilege to reduce prejudice  / Jane M. Simoni, Karina L. Walters.

Journal of Homosexuality, 41 (2001) 1, p. 157-172
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 41 (2001) 1 , p. 157-172
samenvatting: Proposes that heterosexuals' attitudes toward their own heterosexual identity evolve in a manner similar to the development of racial identity attitudes among Whites - another dominant group with priviliged social status. It is hypothesized that a more developed heterosexual identity would be associated with diminished levels of negative attitudes towards non-heterosexuals.

Visibility as Privilege and Danger : Heterosexual and Same-Sex Interracial Intimacy in the 21st Century  / Amy C. Steinbugler.

Sexualities, 8 (2005) 4 (oct), p. 425-443
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 8 (2005) 4 (oct), p. 425-443
samenvatting: Sexuality scholars largely neglect interracial intimacy in the United States as a site worthy of sustained empirical research. Consequently, monoraciality is not adequately problematized or identified as a racial prerequisite to fundamental heterosexual privileges. Further, by implicitly constructing same-sex couples as monoracial, scholars fail to consider how heterosexuality and White supremacy together saturate public spaces to render queer interraciality profoundly invisible. In this essay I critique the monoracial bias of sexuality research by analyzing interracial narratives on the topic of visibility. Using in-depth qualitative interviews with four heterosexual and four same-sex interracial couples, I argue that for interracial partners a paradoxical tension surrounds visibility. Though couples may seek public affirmation of intimate relationships, for both heterosexual and queer interracial couples, public recognition risks harassment or violence.

Priscilla (White) Queen of the Desert : Queer Rights/Race Privilege  /

Damien W. Riggs.New York, NY: Lang, 2006 - 136 p.
uitgave: New York, NY: Lang, 2006 - 136 p.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: Written for an interntional audience, Priscilla, (White) Queen of the Desert speaks to the current crisis in queer rights and representation in the context of colonial nations. Focusing on issues of identity, but exploring concerns as wide ranging as morality, same-sex marriage, state sanction, families, and history, this book will appeal to students, activists and academics alike. Asking hard questions of queer rights movements, and the identity politics that often inform them, the book calls for a sustained engagement with the theorisation of queer racial identity and queer race privilege.

Wearing a Rainbow Bumper Sticker : Experiential Learning on Homophobia, Heteronormativity, and Heterosexual Privilege  / Lisa M. Nunn, Sophia C. Bolt.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 12 (2015) 3 [jul-sep], p. 276-301
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 12 (2015) 3 [jul-sep], p. 276-301
samenvatting: College campuses are known to be heteronormative environments that often foster heterosexism and homophobia. There is a broad call for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) awareness-building curricula as one avenue for positive change in campus climates. This study interrogates the effects of an experiential learning activity where students were tasked with wearing a rainbow bumper sticker on their person for 24 hours. The aim was to inspire deep learning through self-reflection on experiences of discomfort. Students positively rated the activity for helping them recognize how homophobia influences conformity to heterosexual norms; recognize heterosexual privilege; and empathize with others who hold nonnormative sexual identities. White and Lesbian : Intersections of Privilege and Oppression  / Catherine Crisp.

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 18 (2014) 2 (apr-jun), p. 106-117
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 18 (2014) 2 (apr-jun), p. 106-117
samenvatting: This article defines and explores concepts of privilege, oppression, and intersectionality as they relate to the author's experience of being a white lesbian female. The Awareness/Acceptance/Action Model, used frequently in 12-step programs, is presented as a means by which to take initial steps to become aware of privilege and address oppression. Examples of the intersections between different forms of privilege and oppression are presented. Although the article is applicable to many different forms of privilege and oppression, the primary focus is on white privilege and lesbian oppression.
