samenvatting: This article analyzes the US congressional hearings leading up to the 1990 classification of testosterone as a controlled substance and the gendered, racial, and national stakes underlying debates about hormone circulation. The move to regulate synthetic testosterone reveals broader cultural anxieties about mobility at several levels: sex hormones' status as fluctuating chemicals in the body; their ability to alter the body and thus overtly demonstrate the fluidity of sex and gender categories; the shifting medicolegal investments in linking hormones with normative sexual, racial, and national characteristics; and the flow of hormones across national borders through production and consumption. Bringing a transgender studies critique to bear on state practices and discourses that may appear marginal to the field, I suggest that although the hearings never directly reference the category of transgender, they offer important insight into the biopolitical and geopolitical contexts through which gendered subjects are produced and maintained.

'The godhead is unstrung' : On Gloria Anzaldúa's celebration of the body and the end of patriarchy  / J. Edgar Bauer.

samenvatting: U.S. American poet, essayist and cultural theorist of Chicano extraction Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004) once depicted herself as '[a] third world lesbian feminist with Marxist and mystic leanings'. Accordingly, her writings were highly critical of America?s political landscape and advocated resistance to sexual, racial and cultural assimilation. Anzaldúa?s defiant nonconformity is discernible even at a linguistic level, inasmuch as her texts often include untranslated Castilian, Chicano Spanish, and Amerindian expressions and sentences that constitute hurdles for the English-language readership she primarily addressed. As regards the contents of her writings, Anzaldua?s shamanistic self-understanding as a 'shape-changer' and her full-fledged espousal of 'spiritual activism' have appealed to ethnic minority groups and academic specialists, but have failed to attract the interest of wider audiences. It is thus not surprising that although Anzaldúa?s texts marked the emergence of gender and queer studies in the late eighties and early nineties, their general reception has hardly been commensurate with their emancipatory and theoretical relevancy. Among the late twentieth-century critics of the Western conception of sexuality, Anzaldúa took a singular stance. While her intellectual peers were mostly concerned with structural factors (socio-economical or otherwise) that hinder sexual fulfilment, Anzaldúa focus on the sexed body reflects deep autobiographical associations with her experience of pain, suffering and shame. As Anzaldúa pointed out, she began having menstrual bleedings when she was three months old due to a rare hormonal dysfunction, and her adult life was marred by 'very severe menstrual periods'. To alleviate the pain that had become her 'normal way of life', Anzaldúa decided in 1980 to have a hysterectomy. The psychological wounds her illness left behind were however more harrowing than the immediate physical distress. Since '(t]he bleeding distanced her from others', she grew up convinced 'that something was fundamentally wrong' with her, and eventually developed an intense sense of shame'for being abnormal'. Anzaldúa encapsulated the quandaries of her condition in one of the most personal texts in her entire published corpus: 'La vulva es una herida abierta / The vulva is an open wound' .

samenvatting: Scholars have noted the centrality of migration law to mythic constructions of nation and national identity. Taking off from this observation, this article proposes a narrow focus on the process of legal meaning-making by courts and the legislature and how the lines drawn between the public and private spheres figure in these constructions. This article analyses two instances in which female subjects whose bodies are treated as symbols, carry the weight of legal meaning-making in constructing a discursive public or private body. By focusing on the regulation of baring and veiling in the Canadian context, the article considers regulatory effects that lie outside of the formal rules that define the terms of exclusion from the nation, set the conditions for entry, police its borders or extend formal membership. For the women they generally target, the regulation of both baring and veiling is directly experienced as a loss or diminished subject hood in the form of legal, political and social exclusion, even when the legal principles invoked in support of regulation purport to have egalitarian objectives such as gender equality and preventing social harm. Within the neoliberal script, the bared and veiled targets of regulation are less like subjects and more like objects. Feminist theory has long demonstrated how gender hierarchy limits or prevents full subjecthood but queer analysis pushes this further by noting that sexuality has proven particularly antithetical to subjecthood. I argue that while both insights are relevant here, a reflexive pause in the legal construction of particular regulated bodies (and regulatory problems) can shift the focus on actual persons who bear the brunt of regulation and transcend simplistic ?for or against? formulations of critical questions about law.

samenvatting: This essay reflects principally on the work of South African artist Nicholas Hlobo, born in Cape Town in 1975, who has, in a relatively short space of time, achieved international art-world visibility for his sculptural objects made from rubber, fabric, and found objects (often including wood, soap, and colonial-era furniture). I draw for the purposes of comparison on the work of photographer Zanele Muholi (born in 1972 in Umlazi, Durban), an artist-activist whose primary concern is, in her own words, to present "positive imagery of blackqueers (especially lesbians) in South African society and beyond" (Muholi 2010 online; Williamson 2009). Both artists are well known in South African art circles for work that, although in different media, intervenes in the fields of local gender politics and anxieties about the body politic and the politics of the body - this in a country in which, despite guarantees of freedom from discrimination on the basis of sexuality, it remains dangerous to be identified publicly as lesbian, gay, or transgender.

samenvatting: The 48 essays and photographic dossiers in these three volumes examine the history of the human body as a field where life and thought intersect. They show how different cultures at different times have entwined physical capacities and mental mechanisms in order to construct a body adapted to moral ideas or social circumstances, the body of a charismatic citizen or a visionary monk, a mirror image of the world or a reflection of the spirit. Each volume emphasizes a particular perspective. Part 1 explores the human body's relationship to the divine, to the bestial, and to the machines that imitate or simulate it. Part 2 covers the junctures between the body's "outside" and "inside" by studying the manifestations - or production - of the soul and the expression of the emotions and, on another level, by examining the speculations inspired by cenesthesia, pain, and death. Part 3 brings into play the classical opposition between organ and function by showing how organs or bodily substances can be used to justify or challenge the way human societies function and, conversely, how political and social functions tend to make the bodies of the persons filling them the organs of a larger body - the social body or the universe as a whole.

When the Body of the Queer Researcher Is 'Trouble'  / Michela Baldo.

samenvatting: This intervention addresses the importance of the performative body in queer activist movements in Italy and explores the role of space in its articulation. More specifically, it tackles the issue of how queer bodies are produced in academic spaces as opposed to activist spaces and what makes the queer body of the researcher out of place in academia, notwithstanding the fact that the US tradition describes queer theory development as arising from queer activism and performance. This question takes inspiration from the case of Zarra Bonheur, an Italian collective creation initiated by academic/performer Rachele Borghi, whose agenda is to turn scientific research into performances. Rachele's performative talk at the University of Bordeaux, in which she undresses, making her naked body visible as integral part of the content of her class on queer body and space, stirred a bulk of attacks and troubled academia. In order to understand why, this paper reflect on the still strong boundaries existing between academia and activism, that is between what should be personal and private (sexuality, nudity) as opposed to what should be public; between high culture and low culture and between what can be done or not done in research and in its transmission. Such a reflection exposes the contradictions intrinsic in the making of queer in academia and suggests ways to reconsider reflexivity and the place of body, emotions and networks of relationships in this space. Eventually, as queer academics we should be contesting not only the outside but the within, and not only by means of our ideas but also by means of our enmeshed bodies.
