Not for you? Ethical implications of archiving zines  / Kirsty Fife.

Punk & Post-Punk, 8 (2019) 2, p. 227-242
bron: Punk & Post-Punk jaargang: 8 (2019) 2 , p. 227-242
samenvatting: The archival value of zines (self-published pamphlets often produced by radical and marginalized communities) as historical records has been well documented in academic research. Red Chidgey refers to zines as ?sources of advocacy and empowerment for those who make them, an attempt to bear witness to their own lives'. As evidence of networks, cultures, linguistics and experiences of marginalized individuals and communities, zines often exist as the only representation of ephemeral and otherwise undocumented spaces, which makes them incredibly valuable as the primary source material. Following the establishment of large zine collections at heritage spaces including the Women's Library, British Library, Wellcome Library and Tate, zines are now regularly collected and used in programming at heritage organizations. But what does it mean to archive and make use of zines - particularly those created by marginalized makers and communities - in an institutional heritage context? This article considers the ethical implications of archiving zine practice and cultures -anti-institutional in its nature - in institutional spaces. Through a case study analysis of the community-led archive project Queer Zine Archive Project, I argue that, if zines are archived, it is imperative that archive workers are critically thinking about and incorporating the originating politics of zine culture into protocols for cataloguing, access, interpretation and use of these materials.

Peaks and fanzines. Fuses for a rebellion  / Paula Guerra and Laura López/

Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2, p. 4-8
bron: Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2 , p. 4-8
samenvatting: Writing about fanzines nowadays, at this very moment, makes us feel as if we were inside an episode of Twin Peaks. A universe involves and captures us, even after we know its story and its ending. In this same universe, we found a series of figures, characters, eccentric stories that inhabit the cities and imaginary spaces, just like in fanzines. As in the series, in fanzines we have the possibility to unveil mysteries. And why did we establish this connection? Firstly, we consider that both fanzines and the television series Twin Peaks are a landmark of postmodern texts and productions (Albanese, 2012); secondly, in our understanding, they are both characterized by complex narratives that are not always appreciated or taken into account (Mittell, 2006) due to their complexity or exposition/presentation mode. They are both capable of producing countless hidden stories from various points of view, even those that are often overlooked. Focusing on the first reason - the fact that they are a landmark of post-modern texts - we assess that fanzines are an interpretative lens on the world, but also on individuals and their interactions, similarly to what happened with the series in the 1990s. With its premiere, the series soon became a popular culture phenomenon, becoming unparalleled for its narrative and storytelling construction. In fact, the series was itself an interpretive lens on society at that time, making it known that every individual has a hidden face. In Laura Palmer's case, it was drugs and sexual abuse. In fact, both the fanzines and the series are not only an interpretive lens on the real world, but also on imaginary universes. From a sociological and cultural studies point of view, both show us that there is much more beyond what the eye sees. There are more interactions, causes, consequences, perceptions, and meanings. By making other realities known, fanzines have become spaces of freedom, thought and creation, as well as an alternative to conventional media. The focus of this Special Issue is gender and sexual dissidence, and in this sense feminist fanzines (Guerra & Bittencourt, 2018) have become DIY movement communication networks (Kempson, 2015), because they have made possible the emergence of spaces of subjectivities, allowing us to see what lies behind the fanzine. From an analytical point of view, several scholars see feminist and queer Peaks and fanzines. Fuses for a rebellion ZINES, n°2, 2021 6 fanzines as texts of resistance (Ferris, 2001; Downes, 2010) while others see them as logics of opposition (Schilt, 2003).

Una Archiva del DIY: una fanzinoteca feminista-cuir  / Gelen Jeleton (María Ángeles Alcántara).

Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2, p. 9-20
bron: Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2 , p. 9-20

Feminist zines in print and beyond: Transnational and transmedia relationships on the move.  / Laura López.

Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2, p. 47-57
bron: Zines: An International Journal on Amateur and DIY Media (2021) 2 , p. 47-57
samenvatting: Technology has led to the possibility to communicate and create all kinds of publications. Despite technology advances which, at one point, involve the origing of zines, the technology from the last few decades has been seen with distrust from a part of hte zine scene. The materiality of the zine seems to be a central part of these publications but the emrgence of the peronal computer and INternet change all landscape. Nowadays, practices that found the analogical part and the digital one are a reality, and even further, from the feminist point of viw, feminist zines have represented a worldwide network and have allowed providing and to nunace different feminist narratives around the world. I will analyze some of the zines produced in diffirent countries like Spain, Portugal, or Guatamala that have created a universe around them and they g=have challenged the technology with the zine and feminist spirit. To name some of them, I will address 'Kit de autodefensa ciberfeminista,' 'Your Mouth is a Guillotine', 'Rega fanzine'' , or 'Mi cuerpo es un territorio politico.

After the Riot: Taking new feminist youth subcultures seriously  / Angela Wilson.

samenvatting: This thesis argues that in North America since the late 1980s, young women's interest in feminism has been expressed through participation in feminist music subcultures. The project provides an overview of the studies of culture, musical subculture, and gender and music making, as weIl as an historical context of feminism and a discussion of the relationship between second and third wave feminism. The first case study explores Riot Grrrl's roots in the DIY activism of DC hardcore punk, its links to the female-oriented indie music scene of Olympia, Washington, and the subculture' suse of alternative media. The second study examines efforts to integrate queer politics into third wave feminism through lesbian punk rock music subculture. The final study of electronic feminist punk rock examines how young feminists use alternative media such as zines, internet message boards, web sites, music making, and performance to educate young women about sexual abuse and homophobia. Analysis of the Riot Grrrl, lesbian punk rock, and electronic feminist punk rock subcultures demonstrates how young women claim spaces for their own feminist politics, even if they have gone relatively undetected by the mainstream culture.
