samenvatting: With the rise of social media, consumers have become increasingly vocal about and engaged in brands? approaches to diversity and inclusivity. Recently, the LGBTQ+ community has received particular attention and their representation in mainstream media and advertising has become observably amplified. In investigating consumer responses to brands incorporating the community in their advertising, prior literature has largely focused on two subcultures, gay males and lesbians, and the theoretical foundation of social identity theory, concluding that responses are mostly driven by ingroup favoritism. This study contributes to this research stream by examining the LGBTQ+ subculture of nonbinary individuals and the role of outgroup attitudes and conditions in which similarity may be less relevant. Hence, this study investigates to what extent the levels of other-group orientation and self-expansion motivation of heterosexual, binary consumers affect the relationship between gender identity portrayals (binary vs. nonbinary) in advertising and their subsequent attitudinal and behavioral responses. To address this question, an online experiment in a 2 (binary vs. nonbinary gender portrayals) x 2 (self-expansion motivation: high vs. low) x 2 (other-group orientation: high vs. low; measured) between-subjects design was conducted. In line with prior research, the results show that depictions of the outgroup (i.e., nonbinary models) indeed result in less favorable responses than depictions of the ingroup (i.e., binary models). However, results also suggest a moderating effect of other-group orientation, such that consumers with high levels exhibit more positive attitudes and indirectly purchase intentions to advertising imagery of nonbinary models. No evidence is found for the moderating role of self-expansion motivation. This study sheds light on an increasingly difficult task many marketers are faced with today: While consumers' calls for inclusivity are becoming louder, there still seems to be a sizable consumer segment resistant to such untraditional advertising approaches. More research is needed to find ways that help navigate responses of these opposing consumer segments.

Power to Become Children of God: Remembering in-the-Life with a Johannine (Dis)Position  / Eric A. Thomas.

Journal of Bisexuality, 22 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 253-267
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 22 (2022) 2 (apr-jun), p. 253-267
samenvatting: Honoring the contributions of Shaykh Dr. Ibrahim Abdurramah Farajajé and Joseph Beam, this article advances an in-the-life approach to selected scriptures from the Gospel of John as a means to affirm that Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and same gender loving persons are among those who can chose to access, in the words of John 1:12, the power to become children of God. In its critique of the hypocritical erotophobia of African American Christian communities toward its queer members, this article proposes that Farajajé and Beam's writings can undergird the agency to live into God-with-us-ness. Characters from John's gospel are put into context with contemporary Black LGBTQ and same-gender-loving experience to gesture toward possibilities for resilient self-acceptance, dignity, and flourishing.

Dangerous data: Seeing social surveys through the sexuality prism  / Laurel Westbrook, Jamie Budnick, and Aliya Saperstein.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 717-749
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 5-6 (sep), p. 717-749
samenvatting: Social surveys both reflect and shape beliefs about sexuality. Social norms construct the ?authorized vocabulary? of surveys and the resulting data influence the research questions that can be answered and the policies likely to be inspired by study findings. Scholars have called for balancing attention to pleasure vs. danger and normative vs. non-normative practices in studies of sexuality as well as for collection of data on sexual desires, behaviors, and identities. We combine these calls into what we term the sexuality prism. To better understand how data about sexuality are typically collected and what research they facilitate or constrain, we analyze six decades of materials from four of the largest social surveys in the United States and five national surveys focused on sexuality, health, and family formation. We find that these surveys do not allow for investigations of the full sexuality prism. Instead, they tend to assume and narrowly investigate the ?charmed circle? of sexuality: heterosexual, married, monogamous, and potentially procreative couplings. When surveys ask about non-normative practices, they do so primarily in the context of risk (e.g. sexually transmitted diseases) and ignore non-normative practices that are not deemed 'risky.' The focus on risk likely explains the greater attention to sexual behaviors and the shortage of questions about sexual desires and identities. Moreover, most questions about sexual practices highlight the dangers of sex, rather than the pleasures. Not only does this severely limit the scope of U.S. sexuality research, it also means that, individually and collectively, these surveys reify ?sex negativity.?

Queer expectations: An empirical critique of rural LGBT+ narratives  / Christopher T. Conner and Daniel Okamura.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 8 (dec), p. 1040-1057
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 8 (dec), p. 1040-1057
samenvatting: Much of the body of literature on LGBT+ populations within the United States place urban areas and so-called gayborhoods as goals and eventualities, paralleling early US studies on immigration. Using a multistage, mixed-methods approach, consisting of secondary analysis of the Pew 2013 Study of LGBT Persons (N = 1197) and in-depth interviews (35 gay men, 2 trans-identifying individuals, 1 heterosexual woman, and 2 lesbians), we found that rural LGBT+ residents engaged in both short-term and long-term travel to mitigate feelings of being spatially segregated from the loci of gay social life - what Ghaziani (2019a) refers to as cultural archipelagos. However, rural residents also used their geographical location to resist dominant narratives about LGBT+ life. Some of our respondents felt that living in rural areas better situated them to be activists and advocates for LGBT+ rights, while others simply did not feel they could be comfortable within more urban contexts. These findings suggest that rural LGBT+ residents may have delinked their sexual selves with their cultural and political selves, thus illustrating the plurality of rural queer voices that exists. As we also argue, while residence category should be considered as influencing one's experience, care must be used to avoid overly deterministic accounts. Finally, this article extends earlier work by Brekhus (2003), Mattson (2015), and Ghaziani (2019a) by presenting the meaningfulness of travel to and from queer cultural strongholds.

Responsiveness of Sex Education to the Needs of LGBTQ + Undergraduate Students and Its Influence on Sexual Violence and Harassment Experiences  / Brittnie E. Bloom ...[et al.].

American Journal of Sexuality Education, 17 (2022) 3, p. 368-399
bron: American Journal of Sexuality Education jaargang: 17 (2022) 3 , p. 368-399
samenvatting: Exposure to comprehensive sex education shows promise in preventing sexual violence and sexual harassment (SVSH) perpetration and victimization and supporting survivors. Determining if these benefits are also found in communities experiencing high levels of SVSH, such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) communities, is needed. Utilizing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study design, we assessed LGBTQ + undergraduates' exposure to sex education (SE), what SE sources they relied on, and SE's perceived usefulness and responsivity to LGBTQ + needs. Compared to their non-LGBTQ + peers, LGBTQ + students perceived SE as less helpful in navigating personal desires (t294 = 2.08, p < .05) and sexual consent (t295= 2.15, p < .05). LGBTQ + students were more likely to use media (e.g., internet, pornography) as their primary source of SE on topics such as violence in relationships and consent. In-depth interviews substantiated quantitative findings, highlighting the non-responsiveness of SE among LGBTQ + students and further revealed that having to supplement SE through media increased LGBTQ + students' vulnerability to SVSH (including online sexual coercion). Via interviews, LGBTQ + students reported formal SE to be non-inclusive, led to experiences of othering, silencing, erasure, and made them more vulnerable to SVSH and related outcomes. SE policy and education must be modified to be more inclusive and helpful for LGBTQ + students, especially relating to SVSH prevention.

Leaning into Student Discomfort with LGBTQ Issues in the Counselor Education Classroom  / Thomas M. Toomey & Ryan G. Carlson.

Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling, 16 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 86-103
bron: Journal of LGBTQ Issues in Counseling jaargang: 16 (2022) 1 (jan-mar), p. 86-103
samenvatting: Beginning counselors often struggle to conceptualize LGBTQ clients due to personal or religious beliefs. Counselor educators must be prepared to encourage and navigate discomfort from students that may arise due to personal beliefs. We offer a new model for navigating difficult LGBTQ dialogue in the counselor education classroom.

Too Sexy, Too Soon? The Sexualization of Teenagers in Teen-Targeted Streaming Series: A Content Analysis  / Lea Sofie Gomolzig.

samenvatting: Previous research investigating the sexualized portrayal of characters in the media has primarily focused on the adult and female experience of sexualization. In response to this, a content analysis was performed on 20 episodes from five popular teen series (Sex Education, Élite, Euphoria, Cruel Summer, Gossip Girl ? Reboot) to investigate the prevalence of self-sexualization, interpersonal sexualization, and sexualized sexual content of teenage characters in streaming series popular among adolescents. Specifically, sexualization between minority and majority groups within these series was compared. Results partially confirmed our hypotheses, showing that women and characters of color tend to wear more revealing clothing than male or White characters. Additionally, in contrast to non-queer characters, characters with queer identities were significantly more likely to be shown implicitly nude. However, contrary to our hypothesis, male characters were more often shown partially and implicitly nude than female characters. Further, an analysis of sexual scenes showed that sexual interactions were more often shown explicitly rather than non-explicitly. While this study did not find consistent support for the notion that minority characters generally experience interpersonal sexualization more often than their majority counterparts, it demonstrated the persistent occurrence of self-sexualization in teen shows. The findings further underline the importance of studying vulnerable groups targeted by sexualization and contribute to our understanding of media representations of male sexualization.
