Exploring and promoting advance care planning among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) older adults living in non-metropolitan British Columbia & Brian de Vriesc Department of  / Robert M. Beringer & Gloria Gutman.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services, 33 (2021) 4 (okt-dec), p. 407-426
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 33 (2021) 4 (okt-dec), p. 407-426
samenvatting: This qualitative Canadian study explores advance care planning among LGBTQ older adults living in non-metropolitan regions in the province of British Columbia. We examined the level of engagement in advance care planning (ACP) among LGBTQ persons and introduced a region-specific ACP Tool to our participants. Six focus groups were held with 32 participants with ages ranging from 55 to 84 years (M = 67.3 years). The focus group transcripts were audio recorded, transcribed and manually coded for themes. The four overarching themes were information uncertainty; the planning tool; the temporary substitute decision maker; and the LGBTQ perspective. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Experiences of older LGBT people ageing in place with care and support: A window on ordinary ageing environments, home-making practices and meeting activities  / Roos Hoekstra-Pijpers.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 25-44
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 25-44
samenvatting: In the (near) future, a growing number of older LGBT people will "age in place", receiving health and social care in their homes and wider ageing environments until a very advanced age. This article discusses the results of a survey research among 115 LGBT people aged 65 years and over who are ageing in place and who are weekly and monthly receivers of health and social care services, and follow-up interviews with 10 people. The research was situated in the Netherlands. The results show that older LGBT people's experiences with ageing in place are related to differences in how ageing environments are able to accommodate LGBT lifestyles. The results further shed light on the meaning of receiving health and social care at home as an older LGBT person, and the ways in which LGBT life histories and identities are expressed in care relationships, both in verbal and in home-making practices. Finally, the results suggest that the links between older LGBT people and the wider LGBT community are vulnerable, and neighbourhood-based activities may not be sufficiently responsive to older LGBT people.

Staff perceptions of barriers that lesbian, gay and bisexual residents face in long-term care settings  / Feliciano Villar ...[et al.].

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 45-62
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 45-62
samenvatting: This study explores the difficulties that older lesbian, gay and bisexual residents may encounter when attempting to express their sexuality while living in long-term care facilities (LTCF), as perceived by staff. The sample was made up of 1714 staff members working in 152 Spanish long-term care institutions for older people. Answers to an open-ended question regarding barriers that older lesbian, gay and bisexual people living in residential institutions may face when attempting to express their sexuality were content-analysed. The results suggest that the barriers are almost exclusively caused by other people's views on non-heterosexual issues, including both heterosexist assumptions (e.g. the lack of awareness of sexual diversity in LTC settings, something that is particularly frequent among care assistants) and homophobic attitudes and behaviours generally attributed by technical staff and managers to heterosexual residents. Practical and policy implications, which should take into account job role as a key factor, are discussed.

"Ï'm black, a woman, disabled and lesbian": LGBT ageing and care services at the intersections in South Africa  / Finn Reygan, Neil Henderson, Jamil Khan.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 63-78
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 63-78
samenvatting: Experiences of ageing and care are closely tied to structural location in terms of race, class, gender and sexuality among others. In South Africa, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people's experiences of ageing and care are profoundly influenced by the patriarchal, postapartheid context. This study, the first of its kind in South Africa, was an exploratory study of the experiences of ageing and care among LGBT elders in two provinces in South Africa. Findings indicate that LGBT elders' experiences of ageing and care are influenced by intersectionality and lack of access to care. In particular, the ageing and care experiences of black and Coloured LGBT elders, especially lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, are disproportionately impacted. Implications of these exploratory findings are that national ageing and care policies need to specifically name LGBT elders as a key group and that services be rolled out for LGBT elders.

First steps: Health and social care professionals beginning to address the palliative and end of life care needs of people with diverse gender identities and sexual orientations in Lebanon  / Claude Chidiac.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 157-163
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 1-2 (jan-feb), p. 157-163
samenvatting: The available evidence demonstrates that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people face challenges when accessing palliative care services, and receive suboptimal care at the end of life. This is mainly attributed to assumed heterosexuality, lack of knowledge and understanding of LGBT issues and specific healthcare needs, discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia. In Lebanon, legal and institutional support for LGBT individuals is minimal, and palliative care provision remains scarce and fragmented. This compounds the impact of social stigma and marginalisation, and results in unrecognised palliative and end of life care needs for the LGBT individual. This short commentary discusses the development of an LGBT palliative care workshop in Lebanon, which was the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It also explores how this initiative has led to further developments, and how these efforts can be replicated in other countries in the MENA region.

Pink Networks : An exploratory study of queer older adults' use of queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships to do relatedness in the Dutch context  / Lara Fizaine.

samenvatting: In this thesis, I argue that queer older adults in the Dutch context do relatedness through queer joy, practical kinship, and care relationships, in which: a) Relatedness is meant to include "literally any kind of relation between persons" (Stafford, 2000, p. 37) and is based on metaphorical con-substantiality, or the idea that flows between people of things that are not actual substances but possess animating properties and are linked to strong emotions, that has the power to build a connection between people (Carsten, 2011). b) Queer joy is the kind of bittersweet joy that one, as a queer person, might feel when they realize that although they are not living in their ideal reality, they have the power to imagine, play with and occasionally get a taste of this ideal reality (Muñoz, 2019; Royster, 2021); but also a doing - the act of creating a temporary, utopian space together - with the power of creating fluid and mutable networks of relatedness. c) Practical kinship is kinship seldom based on norms, hinging instead on the choice to maintain it through kin work (Yan, 2020), which I argue is what enables my participants to not be alone even when they have little in ways of normative kinship. d) Care relationships are what allow queer older adults to confirm, undo, create, and strengthen ties with kin of all kinds, and are mostly focused on experiencing the need for care in groups, leading to the formation of care networks akin to therapy networks (Krause, 2008).

Sage: a project for older LGBT+ people in Leeds : Time to Shine end of project report

samenvatting: Managed by Yorkshire MESMAC in partnership with Age UK Leeds, the Sage project was coproduced from the start with a strong steering group of older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender plus (LGBT+)people. Recognising the specific issues facing many older LGBT+ people they came together to: - address personal loneliness and isolation - assist in building a community spirit of self-help through action and volunteerism - combat stereotypes and negative thinking about being old and being a member of the LGBT+ community through awareness raising and advocacy. Time To Shine's local evaluators, Care Connect, identified research which reinforced Yorkshire MESMAC's understanding of issues that affect older LGBT+ individuals, that LGBT+ people felt anxious when accessing particular services for the first time and were reluctant to disclose their sexuality. Research showed that older LGBT+ people are especially vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness as they are more likely to be single, live alone, have lower levels of contact with relatives and are less likely to engage with local services. People involved in Sage often joined through word of mouth, a powerful medium in the LGBT+ community. Many have made friends at the regular meetings and have carried these friendships on independently.
