Composing historical activism: Anecdotes, archives, and multmodality in rhetorics of lesbian history  / Jean Bessette.

samenvatting: This dissertation examines the unique rhetorics and technologies lesbian collectives have employed to compose and wield their histories. Focusing on the Daughters of Bilitis (1955-70), the Lesbian Herstory Archives (1974-), and filmic historiographers such as Barbara Hammer and Cheryl Dunye (1994-), I investigate how these historical activists have deconstructed dominant accounts that underpin conceptions of lesbian deviance and replaced them with collective histories of their own making. I argue that these collective rhetors composed radical versions of a queer past that challenged present oppressions, cohered provisional communities, and disrupted static consolidations of lesbian identity. Examining a diverse collection of primary sources from newsletters to documentary films, I assay alphabetic, material, and multimodal rhetorical strategies for composing lesbian history, including 'anecdotal clustering' of experience in print pamphlets and books; radical classification schemas in material archives; and the use of multimodal technologies to reframe and even fabricate archival evidence in experimental documentary films. The studys three core chapters rely upon archival and primary research, complimented by rhetorical, multimodal, and queer theory, as I analyze the cultural contexts, rhetorics, and technologies employed by the collectives to compose their histories. Because I attend to the effects of these histories on each collective rhetor's imagined constituency, my dissertation makes clear the rhetorical significance of historical production and the consequences of composing history on gendered and sexual identifications.

Aujourd?hui, Marian Lens a 62 ans.

Mess up the empire: Deploying and disrupting homonationalism  / John Andrew G. Evangelista.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 4 (jun), p. 347-364
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 4 (jun), p. 347-364
samenvatting: Homonationalism refers to how the West folded LGBTQ rights into the nation through neoliberal economies, intervention, and surveillance of racialized communities. This shift relied on the exceptionalist narrative that reveres Western sexual liberation - liberal, bureaucratic, visible, and consumerist - while silencing queer narratives from Southern, racialized, and migrant communities. The literature found that some LGBTQ (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers) organizations deployed this imperial narrative, yet accounts on the social conditions facilitating such deployments remain scant. To expand the current discussions, my paper situates the Philippine LGBTQ movement's affinity with homonationalism within the political, material, and ideological exigencies that confronted activists.

Bulgarian LGBTQI movement: Generations, identifications, and tendencies  / Shaban Darakchi.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 7 (okt), p. 909-925
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 7 (okt), p. 909-925
samenvatting: Based on 27 in-depth interviews, web platforms analysis, and participatory observations this study investigates (a) the emergence and the development of the Bulgarian lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and intersex (LGBTQI) movement; and (b) the activists' motivation for engagement with the movement. Challenging the new social movements' theories the data from the study suggest that (a) the LGBTQI movement in Bulgaria emerged within the political and the economic transformations marked by anti-communist rhetoric, rather than collective sexual identity; (b) most of the diverse activist communities and the incorporation of "bottom-up" approach did not emerge spontaneously but were established by funded and professionalized project activities; (c) an increasing number of younger activists use left-oriented intersectional approaches in their activism emphasizing on the economic rather than the cultural conditions: (d) the stable financial and social resources of the anti-gender campaigns require reconsideration of the resources and the structure of the LGBTQI movements seen primarily as social entities, often neglecting the economic and the political structures.

Queer expectations: An empirical critique of rural LGBT+ narratives  / Christopher T. Conner and Daniel Okamura.

Sexualities, 25 (2022) 8 (dec), p. 1040-1057
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 25 (2022) 8 (dec), p. 1040-1057
samenvatting: Much of the body of literature on LGBT+ populations within the United States place urban areas and so-called gayborhoods as goals and eventualities, paralleling early US studies on immigration. Using a multistage, mixed-methods approach, consisting of secondary analysis of the Pew 2013 Study of LGBT Persons (N = 1197) and in-depth interviews (35 gay men, 2 trans-identifying individuals, 1 heterosexual woman, and 2 lesbians), we found that rural LGBT+ residents engaged in both short-term and long-term travel to mitigate feelings of being spatially segregated from the loci of gay social life - what Ghaziani (2019a) refers to as cultural archipelagos. However, rural residents also used their geographical location to resist dominant narratives about LGBT+ life. Some of our respondents felt that living in rural areas better situated them to be activists and advocates for LGBT+ rights, while others simply did not feel they could be comfortable within more urban contexts. These findings suggest that rural LGBT+ residents may have delinked their sexual selves with their cultural and political selves, thus illustrating the plurality of rural queer voices that exists. As we also argue, while residence category should be considered as influencing one's experience, care must be used to avoid overly deterministic accounts. Finally, this article extends earlier work by Brekhus (2003), Mattson (2015), and Ghaziani (2019a) by presenting the meaningfulness of travel to and from queer cultural strongholds.
