Internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors in Latinx adolescents with same sex behaviors in Miami  / Manuel A. Ocasio ...[et al.].

Journal of LGBT Youth, 19 (2022) 4 (oct-dec), p. 396-412
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 19 (2022) 4 (oct-dec), p. 396-412
samenvatting: Sexual minorities report poorer mental health relative to heterosexual counterparts, but this is underexplored in Latinx youth. This study compares internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors in Latinx adolescents with Same Sex Behaviors (LASSB) to their Latinx adolescent peers who did not report same sex behaviors (non-LASSB). It also explores the moderating role of biculturalism on the relationship between internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors, and same-sex behaviors. Individual-level baseline data (Total N = 1,634; LASSB n = 195) from five trials of a preventive intervention for Latinx adolescents were synthesized. Normal and clinical levels of internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors were determined, and logistic regression models were conducted to determine the odds of LASSB reporting these behaviors relative to non-LASSB. Additional adjusted models tested for the moderating effect of biculturalism. LASSB reported significantly higher odds of normal levels of all externalizing behaviors and clinical levels of anxious/depressed compared to non-LASSB. Biculturalism significantly moderated the association between same-sex behavior and clinical levels of internalizing behaviors; however, in subgroup analyses among LASSB, biculturalism did not significantly predict any of these behaviors. Latinx adolescents exhibited mental health disparities by same-sex behavior. Biculturalism may be an important indicator for describing these disparities in LASSB and should be further explored.

Depressive symptoms and parental support-seeking in Latinx adolescents: Analyzing variation based on LGBT identity  / Traci K. Gillig, Thomas W. Valente & Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati,

Journal of LGBT Youth, 19 (2022) 4 (oct-dec), p. 413-428

samenvatting: Adolescents experiencing depressive symptoms tend to withdraw from social interaction, but patterns among Latinx LGBT youth (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) are unclear. Latinx adolescents in the Greater Los Angeles Area (N = 549) were surveyed during two consecutive years, and longitudinal relationships among depressive symptoms, parental support-seeking, and loneliness were examined for differences based on youth's LGBT identity. LGBT identity moderated the relationship between baseline depressive symptoms and subsequent parental support-seeking, such that higher baseline depressive symptoms predicted less subsequent parental support-seeking for non-LGBT youth, but not for LGBT youth. The relationship between parental support-seeking and depressive symptoms, both at Time 2, was moderated by LGBT identity, such that more support-seeking tended to correspond with fewer depressive symptoms for non-LGBT youth, but the opposite tended to occur for LGBT youth. Results suggest a subgroup effect, such that LGBT Latinx adolescents may seek parental support differently than their non-LGBT Latinx peers in the context of depressive symptoms.

Latinx Bi+/Plurisexual Individuals' Disclosure of Sexual Orientation to Family and the Role of Latinx Cultural Values, Beliefs, and Traditions  / Roberto L. Abreu ...[et al.].

Journal of Bisexuality, 23 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 1-26
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 23 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 1-26
samenvatting: Family acceptance and support is crucial for LGBTQ individual's well-being. For Latinx LGBTQ people specifically, Latinx cultural values, beliefs, and traditions (e.g., familismo, gender norms, respeto, religion and spirituality) play an important role in their relationship with their family members. To date, however, little is known about the unique experiences of Latinx bi+/plurisexual people within the context of their families. In a sample of 63 Latinx bi+/plurisexual people, we used a qualitative approach to explore: (a) factors leading to the disclosure of one's bi+/plurisexual identity to family members, (b) experiences of Latinx bi+/plurisexual people within their Latinx families after disclosure; and (c) aspects of Latinx culture that influenced the experiences of Latinx bi+/plurisexual individuals and their families. Thematic analysis revealed five major themes: (1) decision-making process (presence of religiosity, fear of being excluded from the collective and violence, perceived negative attitudes toward bisexuality, selective disclosure, and disclosure of authenticity), (2) family reactions to sexual identity disclosure (acceptance, rejection, and invalidation, disregard, and erasure of bi+/plurisexuality), (3) cultural factors that influenced family reactions to disclosure of sexual identity (religion and spirituality, familismo and respeto, strict views on gender norms), (4) impact of family reactions on the individual (validated and affirmed, relieved and confident, hurt and disappointed, and identity concealment), and (5) impact of family reactions on the individual's relationship with the family (stronger bonds and distanced, disrupted, and strained). We provide recommendations for practitioners such as taking into consideration the importance of culture when working with Latinx bi+/plurisexual individuals and their family members.

Psychological sense of community, community civic participation, and ethnic identity on social justice orientation and psychological empowerment between LGBQ and Non-LGBQ youth of color  / David T. Lardier ... [et al.]

Journal of LGBT Youth, 20 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 1-32
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 20 (2023) 1 (jan-mar), p. 1-32
samenvatting: For lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) youth of color, the intersection of identifying as both LGBQ and a person of color results in not only managing racial stereotypes, but also heterosexism and genderism. Developing a critical understanding of oppressive social conditions and ways to engage in social action is a form of resistance for these youth. Research is needed among LGBQ youth of color that examines the range of predictors and outcomes related to civic engagement, development, and empowerment. Drawing on data derived from a sample of urban youth of color (N = 383; 53.1% Female; 75% Hispanic; Age range = 14 to 18 years; 15% identify as LGBQ), this study will: (1) examine the relationship between community-based perceptions (e.g., psychological sense of community), ethnic identity, behaviors (e.g., community civic participation) and awareness of social justice concerns with dimensions of psychological empowerment; and (2) assess differences that these relationships have between LGBQ and non-LGBQ youth of color. Findings indicate that main predictors have a positive impact on intrapersonal and cognitive dimensions of psychological empowerment through social justice orientation, with noted variations between LGBQ and non-LGBQ youth of color.

Bullying, depression, and parental acceptance in a sample of Latinx sexual and gender minority youth  / Roberto L. Abreu ... [et al.]

Journal of LGBT Youth, 20 (2023) 3 (jul-sep), p. 585-602
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 20 (2023) 3 (jul-sep), p. 585-602
samenvatting: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth of color - in particular Latinx SGM youth - experience higher incidents of bullying compared to heterosexual and cisgender White youth. These disparities oftentimes explain increased negative mental health outcomes, such as depression. Parental acceptance may be a particularly important buffer to the effects of bullying on negative mental health outcomes among Latinx SGM youth. In a sample of 1,005 Latinx SGM youth (ages 13-17), we assessed: (a) the prevalence of parental acceptance and bullying, (b) the influence of bullying on depression, and (c) whether the relationship between bullying and depression was moderated by parental acceptance. Results showed that, on average, Latinx SGM youth reported rarely experiencing parental acceptance, frequently experiencing symptoms of depression, and frequently being bullied. Findings revealed that parental acceptance and bullying were significantly related to depression. Furthermore, there was no interaction between parental acceptance and bullying on depression. Findings have implications for how different Latinx cultural values may be further considered to better understand Latinx SGM youth?s perception of their parental figure?s acceptance of their sexual and gender identity and its role on bullying and depression.
