The impact of homophobia, poverty, and racism on the mental health of gay and bisexual latino men : findings from 3 US cities  / R.M. Díaz ... [et al.].

American Journal of Public Health, 91 (2001) 6 (Jun), p. 927-932
bron: American Journal of Public Health jaargang: 91 (2001) 6 (Jun), p. 927-932
samenvatting: Objectives: This study assessed the relation between experiences of social discrimination (homophobia, racism, and financial hardship) and symptoms of psychologic distress (anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation) among self-identified gay and bisexual Latino men in the United States. Methods: Data were collected from a probability sample of 912 men (self-identified as both Latino and nonheterosexual) recruited from the venues and public social spaces identified as both Latino and gay in the cities of Miami, Los Angeles, and New York. Results: The study showed high prevalence rates of psychologic symptoms of distress in the population of gay Latino men during the 6 months before the interview, including suicidal ideation (17% prevalence), anxiety (44%), and depressed mood (80%). In both univariate and multivariate analyses, experiences of social discrimination were strong predictors of psychologic symptoms. Conclusions: The mental health difficulties experienced by many gay and bisexual Latino men in the United States are directly related to a social context of oppression that leads to social alienation, low self-esteem, and symptoms of psychologic distress.

Looking for a tall, dark, macho man ... : sexual-role behaviour variations in Latino gay and bisexual men  / Alex Carballo-Diéguez ... [et al.].

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 6 (2004) 2 (mar/apr), p. 159-171
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 6 (2004) 2 (mar/apr), p. 159-171
samenvatting: A community recruited sample of Latino gay and bisexual men in New York were asked to indicate their likelihood of adopting the insertive (activo) or receptive (pasivo) roles in oral and anal sex according to partners' characteristics. The results show that gender stereotypes of masculinity and femininity play an important role in the sexual behaviour of this population. Versatile individuals report higher likelihood of taking a pasivo sexual role when they perceive a sexual partner as being more masculine than themselves based on his appearing more macho, more aggressive, taller, endowed with a bigger penis, more handsome, or darker skinned. By contrast, respondents report more likelihood of taking an activo role when the partner is perceived as more effeminate, less aggressive, shorter, endowed with a smaller penis, less handsome, or of lighter skin colour. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that, although gender stereotypes play an important generic role, contextual and emotional circumstances may significantly affect sexual-role behaviour in specific cases.

Beyond 'MSM'  / Miguel A. Muñoz-Laboy.

Sexualities, 7 (2004) 1 (feb), p. 55-80
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 7 (2004) 1 (feb), p. 55-80
samenvatting: Latino male bisexuality has been studied for the most part with a focus on men who have sex with men (MSM) and with little attention to sexual desire. The goal of this article is to present a comprehensive understanding of how sexual desire is organized, enacted through sexual activity, and interpreted in the sexual lives of bisexually-active Latino men. To achieve this aim, an analysis was made of 18 sexual histories of bisexually active Latino men who participated in a two-year ethnographic study. Four configurations of sexual desire were constructed to reflect what was found in this population of bisexually-active Latino men: (a) lifetime homoerotic desire and casual sex with women; (b) lifetime heteroerotic desire, but commercial sex with men; (c) lifetime heteroerotic/transgender desire; (d) lifetime sexual desire for women and men. These configurations are explored in detail in this article. The analysis presented here is intended to offer insights into the overall study of Latino male bisexuality and into the foundations for the design of HIV and STI prevention programs directed toward bisexually-active Latino men and their partners.

Bisexual practices : patterns, meanings, and implications for HIV/STI prevention among bisexually-active Latino men and their partners  / Miguel A. Munoz-Laboy, Brian Dodge.

Journal of Bisexuality, 5 (2005) 1, p. 79-101
bron: Journal of Bisexuality jaargang: 5 (2005) 1 , p. 79-101
samenvatting: Recent studies indicate that bisexually active Latino and African-American men are at significantly higher risk for HIV/AIDS than exclusively homosexually active men and exclusively heterosexually active men. This two-year ethnographic study was conducted to examine the sexual practices and factors that shape the sexual negotiations of a sample of bisexually active Latino men in order to contribute to the development of more relevant and effective prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections for this target group. Data collection methods involved ethnographic observations and detailed sexual histories of eighteen bisexually active Latino men in the metropolitan New York City area. For the men in this study, tensions between sexual and gender identities, interconnections of power and sexual activity, importance of the family context, and silences produced within social and sexual environments based on notions of _appropriate_ masculinity and sexuality were identified as the critical factors influencing the processes of negotiating sexual practices and HIV/STI risk. Based on these findings, we believe masculinity could serve as an effective tool with which to build new and innovative HIV/STI prevention efforts for bisexually active Latino men. The Solaar HIV Prevention Program for gay and bisexual latino men : using social marketing to build capacity for service provision and evaluation  / Ross F. Conner ... [et al.].

Aids Education and Prevention, 17 (2005) 4 (August), p. 361-374
bron: Aids Education and Prevention jaargang: 17 (2005) 4 (August), p. 361-374
samenvatting: Community-researcher partnerships can be powerful mechanisms to understand and effectively address health and social problems such as HIV/AIDS prevention. When the partnership is a positive, productive one, the combined expertise and energy of both parties result in a more effective program and a better evaluation of its effects. This article describes one such partnership and how a program challenge provided the opportunity for both partners to develop new capacities and strengthen others. The program is Proyecto SOLAAR, a community-based and culturally-sensitive HIV prevention program for gay and bisexual Latino men. The program is an experiential, daylong retreat focused on personal aspects of the men (e.g., self-concept), ideas about and aspects of their relationship behavior (e.g., cultural misunderstandings, dating behavior), and HIV prevention; there is a follow-up reunion a month later to share experiences with other participants about new dating and HIV prevention behaviors. The article focuses in particular on how the partners built new capacity in the area of social marketing to address the challenge of participant recruitment and describes the components of the new campaign. These components included distinctive images in ads in publications read by the target population, a toll-free telephone number and Web site for easy initial contact with the program, phone cards and postcards featuring the specially created program image to reinforce a connection to the program, and other aspects. The article describes the partnership between the HIV service providers and the researchers and how the collaborative effort was key to understanding and addressing the recruitment problem, identifying potential solutions, and implementing the new social marketing strategy. This process resulted in four kinds of capacities that were built or strengthened, including program recruitment, program content and implementation, program evaluation, and the partnership itself. The article concludes with a discussion of the unexpected benefits of the capacity-building experience and of the antecedent conditions that fostered the positive partnership outcomes.

Bisexual Latino Men and HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections Risk: An Exploratory Analysis  / Miguel Muñoz-Laboy, Brian Dodge.

American Journal of Public Health, 97 (2007) 6 (june), p. 1102-1106
bron: American Journal of Public Health jaargang: 97 (2007) 6 (june), p. 1102-1106
samenvatting: Objectives. We sought to determine whether there were differences in sexual risk among behaviorally and self-identified bisexual men, men who reported having sex with both men and women without reporting a bisexual identity and men who self-identified as bisexual but reported only recent homosexual behavior over the past 6 months. Methods. Through a secondary data analysis, we conducted stepwise linear regression equation modeling to determine which factors were significant predictors of sexual risk among various subgroups of bisexual Latino men. Results. Having sex with women, regardless of sexual identity, increased the likelihood of insertive unprotected anal intercourse with men. Bisexual identity was not statistically associated with unprotected anal intercourse with men. Conclusions. Future studies should begin to examine differences within groups rather than focusing on group comparisons that yield limited insights into sexual risk predictors for homosexually and bisexually active men. Further research that explores risk and protective factors in the sexual lives of Latino bisexual men is also needed.

Bisexual desire and familism : Latino/a bisexual young men and women in New York city  / Miguel Muoz-Laboy ... [et al.].

Culture, Health and Sexuality, 11 (2009) 3 (apr), p. 331-344
bron: Culture, Health and Sexuality jaargang: 11 (2009) 3 (apr), p. 331-344
samenvatting: Families are of critical importance for Latino communities in the USA. Familism - or the cultural value that weighs on interdependence between nuclear and extended family members for support, emotional connectedness, familial honour, loyalty and solidarity - has been demonstrated to reduce sexual health risks among heterosexual youth, yet this relationship has not been examined among Latino bisexual teenagers. In this study, we examined how familism shapes sexual-decision making regarding behaviour and expressions of bisexuality among Latino youth. To accomplish this, we conducted 25 in-depth interviews and ethnographic observations among bisexual male and female youth (15-19 years of age) for nine months in New York City. We carried out a recurrent theme analysis together with the selection of case studies to illustrate key themes regarding familism and Latino teenage bisexuality. Findings suggest that bisexual Latino youth valued closeness to their families by maintaining family ties and seeking their emotional and material support. The negative consequence for those who wanted to keep their bisexuality private is the constant surveillance of the family network. Familism is a complex construct that has a strong potential for providing insights into sexual health practices of bisexual Latino youth.

Hombres Sanos : Exposure and Response to a Social Marketing HIV Prevention Campaign Targeting Heterosexually Identified Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women  / Ana P. Martínez-Donate ... [et al.].

Aids Education and Prevention, 21 (2009) 5 (suppl.), p. 124-136
bron: Aids Education and Prevention jaargang: 21 (2009) 5 (suppl.), p. 124-136
samenvatting: This study examined the reach and impact of a social marketing intervention to reduce HIV risk among heterosexually identified (HI) Latino men who have sex with men and women (MSMW). Repeated cross-sectional intercept surveys were conducted in selected community venues during and after the campaign with 1,137 HI Latino men. Of them, 6% were classified as HI Latino MSMW. On average, 85.9% of the heterosexual respondents and 86.8% of the HI MSMW subsample reported exposure to the campaign. Responses to the campaign included having made an appointment for a male health exam that included HIV testing and using condoms. Campaign exposure was significantly associated with HIV testing behavior and intentions and with knowledge of where to get tested. The campaign reached its underserved target audience and stimulated preventive behaviors. Social marketing represents a promising approach for HIV prevention among HI Latinos, in general, and HI Latino MSMW, in particular.
