HIV/AIDS, Social Capital, and Online Social Networks  / Bruce E. Drushel.

Journal of Homosexuality, 60 (2013) 8 (aug), p. 1230-1249
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 60 (2013) 8 (aug), p. 1230-1249
samenvatting: The prospects for online social networks as sites of information-gathering and affiliation for persons with AIDS and others concerned about HIV/AIDS not only represent the latest development in a trend toward circumventing traditional media and official information sources, but also may offer hope for a revitalization of HIV/AIDS discourse in the public sphere. This article provides an overview of three decades of information-seeking on the pandemic and its social and personal implications, as well as case studies of three examples of social networking surrounding HIV/AIDS. It finds preliminary evidence of the formation of strong and weak ties as described in Social Network Theory and suggests that the online accumulation of social capital by opinion leaders could facilitate dissemination of messages on HIV/AIDS awareness and testing. Organizing the transgender internet : web directories and envisioning inclusive digital spaces  / Jane Sandberg.

bron:
samenvatting: Problematic features of the internet have complicated transgender people's information seeking. Transgender people have historically created web directories to counteract these limitations and to guide others toward resources that are accurate, relevant and respectful. These directories offer valuable insights for librarians and others interested in designing positive online environments that address transgender people's needs.

Queering Wikipedia  / Rachel Wexelbaum, Katie Herzog, Lane Rasberry.

bron:
samenvatting: To increase the diversity of voices, genders and cultures among its contributors and editors, the Wikimedia Foundation has made it a strategic goal to recruit and foster more women, people of color and other underrepresented individuals - including LGBTIQ populations. To encourage cultural heritage institutions, Wikimedia has launched the initiative "Wikipedia loves libraries" and organizes Wikipedia editathons or Wikipedia parties. The Tom of Finland Foundation was the first LGBT cultural heritage institution to participate in this. Others soon followed and developed strategies to improve LGBTIQ information on Wikipedia.

Tape-by-tape: digital practices and cataloguing rituals at the Lesbian Herstory Archives  / Shawn(ta) D. Smith-Cruz.

bron:
samenvatting: Through consistent volunteer participation from lesbian communities, and an uncompromising grassroots approach, the structure and heritage of the Lesbian Herstory Archives has developed a useable formula for archiving lesbian life. This essay outlines the digital collections of the archives. It describes the efforts put forth by the all-volunteer collective, and their dedication toward making materials accessible through the use of digital technology to preserve, catalog and exhibit lesbian herstory. It contains interviews with the "Archivettes" Saskia Scheffer, Rachel Corbmann and Maxime Wolfe who are responsible for the Photos, Online Public Catalogue and the Audio and provides examples of LHA digital practices in the creation and maintenance of the photocollection, OPAC and Audio Tape Digitization project.

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Religious Archives Network  / James Doig Anderson, Mark Bowman, Carl Foote.

bron:
samenvatting: The LGBT Religious Archives Network (LGBT-RAN) is a recent, innovative venture launched to encourage organizations and activists to preserve their histories and thereby to support and encourage scholarly study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) religious movements around the world. LGBT-RAN can best be understood as a 'virtual' archive. It is not a physical repository that collects and preserves papers and records. Instead LGBT-RAN is an online resource center that encourages the preservation of history and makes historical information easily accessible through its web site. Recognizing that history is written from the perspective of those who preserve their records, LGBT-RAN?s overarching purpose is to ensure the preservation and accessibility of the voices and experiences of a great diversity of LGBT religious leaders and groups. LGBT-RAN?s development has been possible only because of the information technology revolution of recent decades that provides widespread and easy access to a large volume of data at a low cost. While LGBT-RAN was an early provider of digital historical information, now virtually every library, archive and museum makes extensive information available online. LGBT-RAN primarily assists LGBT religious leaders and groups in determining how to preserve their records and papers in appropriate repositories. Secondly, LGBT-RAN provides a digital online information clearinghouse for these archival collections, and other LGBT religious history resources for historians, researchers and other interested persons.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data Collection in Clinical Settings and in Electronic Health Records : A Key to Ending LGBT Health Disparities  / Sean Cahill, Harvey Makadon.

LGBT Health, 1 (2013) 1, p. 34-41
bron: LGBT Health jaargang: 1 (2013) 1 , p. 34-41
samenvatting: The Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) 2011 report on the health of LGBT people pointed out that there are limited health data on these populations and that we need more research. It also described what we do know about LGBT health disparities, including lower rates of cervical cancer screening among lesbians, and mental health issues related to minority stress. Patient disclosure of LGBT identity enables provider-patient conversations about risk factors and can help us reduce and better understand disparities. It is essential to the success of Healthy People 2020's goal of eliminating LGBT health disparities. This is why the IOM's report recommended data collection in clinical settings and on electronic health records (EHRs). The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology rejected including sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) questions in meaningful use guidelines for EHRs in 2012 but are considering this issue again in 2013. There is overwhelming community support for the routine collection of SOGI data in clinical settings, as evidenced by comments jointly submitted by 145 leading LGBT and HIV/AIDS organizations in January 2013. Gathering SOGI data in EHRs is supported by the 2011 IOM's report on LGBT health, Healthy People 2020, the Affordable Care Act, and the Joint Commission. Data collection has long been central to the quality assurance process. Preventive health care from providers knowledgeable of their patients' SOGI can lead to improved access, quality of care, and outcomes. Medical and nursing schools should expand their attention to LGBT health issues so that all clinicians can appropriately care for LGBT patients.

Feminist and Queer Information Studies Reader  /

ed. by Patrick Keilty and Rebecca Dean.Sacramento, CA: Litwin, 2013 - xvi, 700 p.: ill.
uitgave: Sacramento, CA: Litwin, 2013 - xvi, 700 p.: ill.
onderwerpen:
samenvatting: In Feminist and Queer Information Studies Reader, Keilty and Dean put the field of Information Studies into critical conversation with studies of gender, sexuality, race, and technology. In classic and original essays, renowned scholars from a range of disciplines think through a broad array of information and technology philosophies and practices. Conceiving of "information" in a broad sense, the contributors reevaluate conventional methods and topics within Information Studies to examine encounters with information phenomena and technology that do not lend themselves easily to the scientific and behaviorist modes of description that have long dominated the field. A Foreword, Introduction, and Afterword provide helpful context to the reader's 27 essays, arranged around topics that include information as gendered labor, cyborgs and cyberfeminism, online environments, information organization, information extraction and flow, archives, and performance.

samenvatting: The museum professions are tracking a monumental shift toward open and inclusive engagement with LGBTQ communities. Programs and policies for visitors and staff are evolving in ways that mirror social and cultural attitudes. Current headlines impel us to insist that simply reflecting the social or political status quo is not enough. The LGBTQ Alliance mission is to advance diversity, equity and inclusion. The Welcoming Guidelines offer concrete tools to help museums incorporate LGBTQ diversity and inclusion into their understanding and pursuit of excellence.
