Allah Loves Equality : Homonationalism and every-day practices of homosexual Muslims in Italy  / Alice Consigli.

Amsterdam: Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), 2017 - 65 p.
uitgave: Amsterdam : Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), 2017 - 65 p.
onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. islam
  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: The present research addresses the social positioning of homosexual Muslims in Italy. More specifically, its main objective is to shed light on the issues that these subjects face in the Italian context, and to understand how religion and sexuality are negotiated on the individual level and in relation with different actors. By opening space for the interpretation of the ways they interact in different social contexts, it is possible to reveal some degree of agency that these individuals are able to express in circumstances of multiple discriminations. More specifically, homosexual Muslims find themselves deferring from more than one dominant representation. On the one hand, major Islamic institutions and discourses portray homosexuality as a sin, and thus homosexuals as underserving worshippers. On the other, the history of the Western LGBT culture has developed some ideas about homosexual identities, which are deeply embedded in notions of visibility and public revindication. These notions seldom represent the experiences of those with a different cultural background.

Dutch, Gay and Muslim : identity formation and the issue of belonging  / Chaimae Azmi.

Amsterdam: Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), 2017 - 74 p.
uitgave: Amsterdam : Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), 2017 - 74 p.

thema:
  1. islam
  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: Over the last few years, right wing political parties have been gaining momentum throughout the West. The victory of Donald Trump in the United States and Brexit are notorious examples of this growing popularity. In the face of the growing Islamophobia, Right wing populist parties are targeting Muslims and using gender equality as well as gay rights to further shun out Muslim Communities and brand Muslim culture as backward, intolerant and homophobic. In the Netherlands, this neo-culturalist discourse, which posits Muslim culture and Dutch culture at opposite ends of the spectrum, is also proliferating in the media and the political scene. For Dutch gay Muslims, the position they are put in becomes difficult. The debate that wishes to ?save? them from their alleged repressive culture also silences them by forcing them to choose one of their identities over the other. Moreover, the very existence of 'gay Muslims' is wiped out by this discourse which does not allow any room for the co-existence of their dual identity: gay and Muslim. This research focuses on the lived experiences of Dutch gay Muslims: the way they experience the relationship between religion and homosexuality, and the ways through which they form and negotiate their identities, and manage to fight for visibility in their own Muslim communities and in the Dutch society.

Homonationalism and western progressive narrative : Locating 'conservative heartlands' with Zenne Dancer (2012) and its western reviews  / Lukasz Szulc, Kevin Smets.

Asian Journal of Communication (2015) (feb), p. 1-16
bron: Asian Journal of Communication (2015)(feb), p. 1-16
samenvatting: In this paper, we analyze the Turkish film Zenne Dancer (2012), which is largely based on what has been called a first gay honor killing in Turkey. We employ a framing analysis to both the film's content and its Western reviews to compare how different media texts frame the murder. The results indicate that while both the film and the reviews recognize tradition, understood here as native and archaic values as well as Islamic religion, as a key factor behind the murder, they locate this tradition quite differently: the film relegates it to the eastern Turkey, and thus implicitly to Kurds, while the reviews tend to extend it to the entire country or even the whole Middle East. We relate these results to the Western progressive narrative that positions the West as a civic and moral ideal that could be achieved by others over time. In particular, we employ Puar's concept of homonationalism to show how different media texts challenge or exploit the Western imperative to 'come out 'and what effects it has for the East-West juxtapositions.

'You live in the West now' ; Reinforcing homonationalist discourse in Shamim Sarif's I can't think straight (2008)  / Els Woudstra.

Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies, 17 (2014) 4, p. 363-377
bron: Tijdschrift voor Genderstudies jaargang: 17 (2014) 4 , p. 363-377
samenvatting: Homonationalism is a recent topic of debate in the field of queer studies, with scholars such as Jasbir Puar and Jin Haritaworn, Tauqir, & Erdem arguing that homonationalist discourse others Muslims by constructing them as homophobic and thus 'backwards', as opposed to Western 'progressive' acceptance of homosexuality. However, these arguments have not adequately addressed the adoption and reinforcement of homonationalist discourse by queer Muslims. Using the concept of homonationalism, this article investigates the reinforcement of homonationalist discourse by queer women of colour in their representation of Muslim and Arab sexuality. It does this by exploring the connection between Western secularist and Orientalist discourses, and Western debate on queer reproduction. Through an analysis of the film 'I can't think straight' I argue that the reflection of these Western discourses in the film reinforce constructions of Western (sexual) exceptionalism and Eastern 'backwardness', implying that inclusion in homonationalist discourse is possible for gay Muslims, as long as they meet certain requirements.
