Gay rights dawn in Ghana : faced with prison or blackmail, queers begin to organize  / Toby Eglund.

www.thegully.com 27-08-2003
bron: www.thegully.com 27-08-2003
samenvatting: Cobbled together from the West African British colony of the Gold Coast and the Togoland trust territory, Ghana became in 1957 the first country in colonial Africa to gain its independence. Lesbians and gays, though, are still waiting to be liberated from a repressive British legacy: sodomy laws. A gay social life exists, mostly in the form of house parties, and a few queer-friendly clubs in the capital, Accra, but there are risks. Because homosexuality is illegal, club-goers, especially tourists, risk blackmail. If they don't pay, social and legal consequences can be serious.

Homosexuals could soon be lynched in Ghana - MP warns.

GhanaWeb 17-06-2011
bron: GhanaWeb 17-06-2011
samenvatting: A senior member of Parliament has warned that the homosexual community in Ghana may soon be at the receiving end of mounting public anger in the form of physical attacks and outright death if they do not stop what he calls their evil deeds. The NDC MP for Shai Osu Doku, Hon David Tetteh Assuming, said he is disgusted at the campaigns being led by respected senior citizens seeking respect and tolerance for gay and lesbian rights. In an interview with Citi News? Parliamentary Correspondent, Richard Sky, Hon. Assuming said homosexuals operating in the country may have to relocate outside Ghana before the growing public outrage against them degenerates into systematic moves to eliminate them one after the other.

From Wrongs to Gay Rights : Cruelty and Change for LGBT People in an Uncertain World  /

samenvatting: In a world where 76+ countries still have laws against homosexuality, a same-sex kiss can lead to a prison sentence or even death. In those countries, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people face arrest for loving the wrong people. Here, in their own words, activists tell what?s going on: >A man sentenced to prison for sending an amorous text. >A transgender woman who needs anonymous health care. >An archbishop who wonders: Dildos for AIDS widows? >A gay priest who struggles with his own homophobia. >Gay rights groups under attack from police and mobs. >The exuberance of Uganda?s first Pride Parade. The authors include LGBT activists in Cameroon, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Zimbabwe. Many chapters of this book appeared first in the "Erasing 76 Crimes" blog, which exposes the human toll of anti-LGBT laws. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to support the blog as well as the work of activists seeking a better life for sexual minorities worldwide.
