samenvatting: This anthropological volume examines Latin American male homosexualities from theoretical, critical, ethnographic, ethnohistorical, and lexicological perspectives. The authors discuss male homosexualities in Spanish-speaking societies, in Brazil, and in indigenous societies in relation to family, society, culture, politics, economy, and ethnicity. They discuss homosexuality in pre-Columbian indigenous societies and in colonial and modern Latin America. Contributors explore wide-ranging issues such as homosexual categorization, machismo and homosexuality, the activo-pasivo cultural dichotomy, the gay image in Chicano fiction, male homosexuality and Afro-Brazilian possession cults, the gay movement and human rights, and others.

Excluded : Making Feminist and Queer Movements More Inclusive  /

Julia Serano.Berkeley, CA: Seal Press, 2013 - 327 p.
uitgave: Berkeley, CA: Seal Press, 2013 - 327 p.

samenvatting: While many feminist and queer movements are designed to challenge sexism, they often simultaneously police gender and sexuality--sometimes just as fiercely as the straight, male-centric mainstream does. Among LGBTQ activists, there is a long history of lesbians and gay men dismissing bisexuals, transgender people, and other gender and sexual minorities. In each case, exclusion is based on the premise that certain ways of being gendered or sexual are more legitimate, natural, or righteous than others. As a trans woman, bisexual, and femme activist, Julia Serano has spent much of the last ten years challenging various forms of exclusion within feminist and queer/LGBTQ movements. In Excluded, she chronicles many of these instances of exclusion and argues that marginalizing others often stems from a handful of assumptions that are routinely made about gender and sexuality. These false assumptions infect theories, activism, organizations, and communities--and worse, they enable people to vigorously protest certain forms of sexism while simultaneously ignoring and even perpetuating others. Serano advocates for a new approach to fighting sexism that avoids these pitfalls and offers new ways of thinking about gender, sexuality, and sexism that foster inclusivity rather than exclusivity.

Comparing Trans-Spectrum and Same-sex-Attracted Youth in Australia: Increased Risks, Increased Activisms  / Tiffany Jones, Lynne Hillier.

Journal of LGBT Youth, 10 (2013) 4 (jul-sep), p. 287-307
bron: Journal of LGBT Youth jaargang: 10 (2013) 4 (jul-sep), p. 287-307
samenvatting: Tran-spectrum youth include those who are gender questioning, transgender, intersex, genderqueer, and androgynous. Drawing on data from an Australian study of more than 3,000 same-sex-attracted and trans-spectrum youth aged 14 to 21, this article compares a group of 91 trans-spectrum youth from the study to 'cisgender' same-sex-attracted peers (who feel their gender identity aligns more fully with their ascribed sex). Comparisons are made on topics including identity disclosure and support; experience of abuse; suicide and self-harm; and school experiences. The trans-spectrum respondents particularly reported experiencing homophobic abuse and suicide attempts in response to homophobia and cissexism significantly more often than their cisgender counterparts. However, an exciting finding of the study was that some of these youth were able to reframe social rejection of their identities using a variety of self-affirming strategies. They were also more likely to respond to discrimination through activism, and many held high hopes for the ways in which they might impact their worlds in the future. The article finally reflects on the special provisions needed for this group in areas such as youth services and education, and the need for individuals to be supportive of trans-spectrum youth who disclose their identities to them. Understanding Health-Care Needs of Sexual and Gender Minority Veterans : How Targeted Research and Policy Can Improve Health  / Kristin M. Mattocks ... [et al.].

LGBT Health, 1 (2013) 1, p. 30-37
bron: LGBT Health jaargang: 1 (2013) 1 , p. 30-37
samenvatting: Given the size of the patient population of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), it is likely the largest single provider of health care for sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals in the United States, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons. However, current VHA demographic data-collection strategies limit the understanding of how many SGM veterans there are, thereby making a population-based understanding of the health needs of SGM veterans receiving care in VHA difficult. In this article, we summarize the emergent research findings about SGM veterans and the first initiatives that have been implemented by VHA to promote quality care. Though the research on SGM veterans is in its infancy, it suggests that SGM veterans share some of the health risks noted in veterans generally and also risks associated with SGM status. Some promising resiliency factors have also been identified. These findings have implications for both VHA and non-VHA systems in the treatment of SGM veterans. However, more research on the unique needs of SGM veterans is needed to fully understand their health risks and resiliencies in addition to health-care utilization patterns.

Gender Diversity in Indonesia : Sexuality, Islam and Queer Selves  /

samenvatting: Indonesia provides particularly interesting examples of gender diversity. Same-sex relations, transvestism and cross-gender behaviour have long been noted amongst a wide range of Indonesian peoples. This book explores the nature of gender diversity in Indonesia, and with the world?s largest Muslim population, it examines Islam in this context. Based on extensive ethnographic research, it discusses in particular calalai - female-born individuals who identify as neither woman nor man; calabai - male-born individuals who also identify as neither man nor woman; and bissu - an order of shamans who embody female and male elements. The book examines the lives and roles of these variously gendered subjectivities in everyday life, including in low-status and high-status ritual such as wedding ceremonies, fashion parades, cultural festivals, Islamic recitations and shamanistic rituals. The book analyses the place of such subjectivities in relation to theories of gender, gender diversity and sexuality.

Eunuchs Online  / Ariel B. Handy and Thomas W. Johnson.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 710-716
bron: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 2 (2015) 4 (nov), p. 710-716
samenvatting: The Eunuch Archive (EA) is an online community of individuals who identify as a eunuch or have strong interests in castration. The Eunuch Archive contains various discussion forums ranging from safe castration methods to the physical and psychological impact of androgen deprivation. The EA also contains fictional stories written by EA members, which potentially help both the authors and readers work through extreme castration ideations. 'Eunuch' as a gender identity is not limited to the online world. There have been at least ten annual gatherings of EA members, as well as a growing acceptance of eunuchs throughout the world (though still minimal). Many countries are now beginning to offer a third gender as a valid gender identity. Preserving information on sites such as the EA along with other trans* dedicated materials can lead to better understanding of the development of gender identities and can also help individuals who desire emasculation but not necessarily feminization to better understand their gender identity and its history. Preserving the EA fills a gap in trans* archives that has previously been unexplored.

"As Long as They Stay Away" : Exploring Lebanese Attitudes Towards Sexualities and Gender Identities  / Nour Nasr & Tarek Zeidan.

samenvatting: This survey constitutes a main deliverable of a project entitled 'Lebanese Attitudes towards Private Liberties'. It is designed to fill a serious information gap in advocacy work relating to sexual and gender rights in Lebanon by providing critical and previously unavailable information by measuring and qualifying attitudes towards sexual and gender rights in Lebanon. With the groundwork knowledge acquired from our activist backgrounds, we had embarked on this project not knowing to what extent Lebanese public attitudes would reflect tolerance and acceptance towards this delicate topic, especially when looking at the national context, not just Beirut. While some results were expected, this project did yield promising and unexpected results on which future advocacy work could be based. Views on sexuality highlighted the importance of the right to sex for enjoyment, free from coercion, judgment and criminalization. While the Lebanese public primarily saw homosexual and transgender identities as a medical or psychological issue, results consistently and repeatedly point in the direction of general disapproval of the use of violence, punitive actions, and imprisonment. Personal attitudes towards individuals with non-normative sexualities and gender identities ranged from a position of advising, helping and medicating, to a position of avoidance, ostracization and marginalization. It is no secret that attitudes with regards to sex, sexuality, and sexual and gender minorities in Lebanon have yet to develop towards more equality and inclusivity. What this first large-scale study in the region suggests, however, is that the Lebanese public?s belief in any individual?s human rights to safety and non-violence is a ground on which we can work towards a more just society.

samenvatting: All the people erkundet das Spektrum von individuellem Gender-Verständnis.
