A Friendly Act of Socio-Cultural Contestation : Asylum and the Big Cultural Divide  / Guglielmo Verdirame.

New York University Journal of International Law and Politics, 44 (2012) 2, p. 559-572
bron: New York University Journal of International Law and Politics jaargang: 44 (2012) 2 , p. 559-572
samenvatting: When refugee status is granted in relation to forms of persecution that have a broader socio-cultural dimension, the censure that is implicit in the grant of asylum also acquires a social-cultural significance. The recognition of a political dissident as a refugee may expose the wrongdoing of a government, but the grant of refugee status to women fleeing genderbased persecution or gay men escaping homophobia will often also expose the wrongdoing of a society. Indeed, it is rare to find a society that is more progressive than its government when it comes to questions of gender equality and sexual orientation. In the vast majority of countries where persecution on these grounds exists, it takes place with the approval or, at best, the acquiescence of the majority of the population. In these forms of persecution, a persecuting state and a persecuting society often coexist and reinforce each other.

Teaching Men's Anal Pleasure : Challenging Gender Norms with "Prostage" Education  / Jonathan Branfman, Susan Ekberg Stiritz.

American Journal of Sexuality Education, 7 (2012) 1 (oct-dec), p. 404-428
bron: American Journal of Sexuality Education jaargang: 7 (2012) 1 (oct-dec), p. 404-428
samenvatting: To help students critique sex/gender norms, sexuality educators should address men's anal pleasure. Men's anal receptivity blurs accepted binaries like male/female, masculine/feminine, and straight/queer. By suppressing men's receptivity, the taboo against men's anal pleasure helps legitimize hegemonic sex/gender beliefs and the sexism, homophobia, and male dominance they encourage. Conversely, by deconstructing men's anal taboo and creating a new language of anal pleasure 'prostage' (pro-STAHJ)' educators can help students challenge restrictive gender norms. We base this argument on an anonymous, online, mixed methods survey we conducted with 228 undergraduate men, as well as existing literature on men's anal sexuality. Sex education and the promotion of heteronormativity  / Tanya McNeill.

Sexualities, 16 (2013) 7 (oct), p. 826-846
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 16 (2013) 7 (oct), p. 826-846
samenvatting: This article examines the promotion of heteronormativity (defined as monogamous, marital, middle class, and white heterosexuality) in US school policy, and argues that sexuality education policies, standards, and curricula demonstrate ambivalence towards LGBTQ individuals and families, and recirculate and reproduce racialized, gendered norms about what forms of desire and familial attachment are appropriate and healthy for American citizens. The author analyzes federal- and state-level sexuality education law and demonstrates how they are linked to the racialized regulation of individuals and populations, as well as how they link heteronormativity with positive affects and non-heteronormative families with negative affects. The article also takes Virginia?s Family Life Education Curricular Standards as a case study of the promotion of heteronormativity and the regulation of affect and intimacy. The author argues that the state?s promotion of heteronormativity in education policy and curricula both enacts and legitimates homophobia in schools.

Perceptions of Same-Sex Relationships and Marriage as Gender Role Violations : An Examination of Gendered Expectations (Sexism)  / Carol M. Doyle, Amy M. Rees and Tana L. Titus.

Journal of Homosexuality, 62 (2015) 11 (nov), p. 1576-1598
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 62 (2015) 11 (nov), p. 1576-1598
samenvatting: The current study sought to add to the literature that has demonstrated a link between sexism and sexual prejudice. The study evaluated whether a community sample with an age range of 19-64 (n = 122), including 32% sexual minority participants, believe that dating, sex, and marriage with same-sex partners are perceived to be gender role violations. Results varied by participant sexual/gender identity (LGBTQ or heterosexual) and political ideology. Liberal LGBTQ persons do not see same-sex relationships as gender role violations; LGBTQ non-liberals and heterosexual liberals rated same-sex relationships as mild violations; and non-liberal heterosexuals perceive same-sex relationships as 'moderate' violations. Our results suggest both positive movement in attitudes toward same-sex relationships, including same-sex marriage, and broader recognition that gender identity, gender role expression, and sexual orientation are separate and distinct components of one?s overall sexual identity. Genderism in the LGBTQQIA Community : An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis  / Laura Boyd Farmer, Rebekah Byrd.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 9 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 288-310
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 9 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 288-310
samenvatting: Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), the researchers examined experiences of genderism within, among, and between members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and ally (LGBTQQIA) community. Genderism, or bias resulting from a gender binary view, was explored with regard to gender identity, gender expression, gender roles, and gender-based assumptions. Responses from 10 participants were analyzed for themes within and across participants using IPA. Seven themes are presented, discussed, and supported by participant extracts. Implications for counseling with LGBTQQIA clients are presented, along with considerations for advocacy at a systemic level. Internalized Stigma Within Sexual and Gender Minorities : Change Strategies and Clinical Implications  / Jae A. Puckett, Heidi M. Levitt.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 9 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 329-349
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 9 (2015) 4 (oct-dec), p. 329-349
samenvatting: Internalized stigma (including internalized homophobia/ heterosexism and internalized transphobia/genderism) negatively affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals' mental health and well-being. Early writings framed internalized stigma as a reaction provoked by a susceptibility to external stigma that should be addressed within the person. However, recent writers have drawn sustained connections between internalized stigma and heterosexist and transphobic sociopolitical atmospheres. Research on the experience of internalized stigma and its negative outcomes are reviewed and evidence-based therapeutic guidelines applicable across various theoretical orientations are presented for counselors working with sexual and gender minority clients. Trans* Individuals? Experiences of Gendered Language with Health Care Providers : Recommendations for Practitioners  / D. Brienne Hagen, M. Paz Galupo.

International Journal of Transgenderism, 15 (2014) 1 (jan-mar), p. 16-34
bron: International Journal of Transgenderism jaargang: 15 (2014) 1 (jan-mar), p. 16-34
samenvatting: This study highlights the experiences of trans* individuals in regard to the use of gendered language by their medical providers. A total of 20 individual interviews were conducted with trans*-identified individuals. Thematic analysis was used to analyze participants? responses. Participants discussed both positive and negative experiences with gendered language in a health care setting. Four primary themes emerged through their experiences that were then used to develop recommendations for providers interested in improving the health care of trans* individuals: (a) medical forms; (b) insurance sex versus gender identity; (c) binary language; and (d) whole person, well-being care. Queer Lovers and Hateful Others : Regenerating Violent Times and Places  /

samenvatting: Since 9/11, gay men and women have experienced relative liberation in parts of the Western world. Coinciding with queer and transgender mobilisations, contemporary queer identity is changing, homosexuality has become acceptable within the army and the police, and (heavily de-sexualised) images of same-sex affection have become mainstream. In Queer Lovers and Hateful Others, however, Jin Haritaworn challenges this progression by exposing what happens to this discourse when sexuality and the racial or religious 'Other' collide. He discusses how the sexual understanding of 'terror' has become increasingly prevalent across the globe in a destructive and overarching ideology. For example, he discusses how gendered images of Islam such as the veil and 'honour crimes' are circulated, largely unchallenged. He looks at movements on the ground, such as how anti-Islam activists have been able to mobilise existing notions of 'Muslim sexism' in order to mainstream a new discourse on 'Muslim homophobia'. Important, timely and innovative, this book provides an engagement with pressing political issues regarding current trends within sexual and gender politics in the neo-colonial world order.

Pride and Prejudice : Factors Affecting School Attachment Among Lesbian, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Girls  / Tracey Peter ... [et al.].

Journal of Lesbian Studies, 19 (2015) 2 (apr-jun), p. 249-273
bron: Journal of Lesbian Studies jaargang: 19 (2015) 2 (apr-jun), p. 249-273
samenvatting: School attachment is often regarded as a key measure in gauging the integration and wellbeing of students. Previous research suggests that levels of school attachment are generally lower among sexual minority students, but most studies focus on between-gender comparisons and do not conduct within-gender analyses. Using data from the First National Climate Survey on Homophobia and Transphobia in Canadian schools, this study set out to empirically analyze what, if any, differences exist among lesbian, bisexual, and heterosexual female students when assessing the relationship between homophobic and gender-negative language, feelings of safety, harassment/direct victimization, and school climate on school attachment. Bivariate and multivariate findings suggest that there are key differences among female students in terms of school attachment. Gay men as parents : Analysing resistant talk in South African mainstream media accounts of queer families  /  Ingrid Lynch and Tracy Morison.

Feminism & Psychology, 26 (2016) 2 (may), p. 188-206
bron: Feminism & Psychology jaargang: 26 (2016) 2 (may), p. 188-206
samenvatting: There is increasing visibility of dissident sexualities and genders in media debates about families, including resistant discourses that challenge delegitimising claims about queer families. There remains, however, a lack of research that assesses the ways in which discourses seeking to defend queer parenthood function to challenge or, at times, reinforce hetero-gendered norms. Families formed by gay men have generally received less attention, both in the media as well as academic scholarship. In this paper, we explore resistant discourses deployed in mainstream print media, attending particularly to news reports about queer fathers and their children. Through a critical thematic analysis of South African newspapers, informed by feminist discursive psychology, we identify four themes in resistant ways of talking: de-gendering parenthood, normalising queer parents, valorising queer parenting, and challenging the heteronormative gold standard. We conclude with the political implications of such resistant talk, as part of a project of transforming restrictive hetero-gendered norms.
