Namaste argues that transgendered people are not so much produced by medicine or psychiatry as they are erased, or made invisible, in a variety of institutional and cultural settings. Namaste begins her work by analyzing two theoretical perspectives on transgendered people--queer theory and the social sciences--displaying how neither of these has adequately addressed the issues most relevant to sex change: everything from employment to health care to identity papers. Namaste then examines some of the rhetorical and semiotic inscriptions of transgendered figures in culture, including studies of early punk and glam rock subcultures, to illustrate how the effacement of transgendered people is organized in different cultural sites. Invisible Lives concludes with new research on some of the day-to-day concerns of transgendered people, offering case studies in violence, health care, gender identity clinics, and the law. samenvatting:	The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is in the process of revising its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), with the DSM-V having an anticipated publication date of 2012. As part of that ongoing process, in May 2008, APA announced its appointment of the Work Group on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders (WGSGID). The announcement generated a flurry of concerned and anxious responses in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, mostly focused on the status of the diagnostic categories of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) (for both children and adolescents and adults). Activists argued, as in the case of homosexuality in the 1970s, that it is wrong to label expressions of gender variance as symptoms of a mental disorder and that perpetuating DSM-IV-TR's GID diagnoses in the DSM-V would further stigmatize and cause harm to transgender individuals. Other advocates in the trans community expressed concern that deleting GID would lead to denying medical and surgical care for transgender adults. This review explores how criticisms of the existing GID diagnoses parallel and contrast with earlier historical events that led APA to remove homosexuality from the DSM in 1973. It begins with a brief introduction to binary formulations that lead not only to linkages of sexual orientation and gender identity, but also to scientific and clinical etiological theories that implicitly moralize about matters of sexuality and gender. Next is a review of the history of how homosexuality came to be removed from the DSM-II in 1973 and how, not long thereafter, the GID diagnoses found their way into DSM-III in 1980. Similarities and differences in the relationships of homosexuality and gender identity to psychiatric and medical thinking are elucidated. Following a discussion of these issues, the author recommends changes in the DSM-V and some internal and public actions that the American Psychiatric Association should take.

Rares sont pourtant les travaux qui permettent de penser au-delà des réactions inspirées par les manifestations d'« homophobie » les plus spectaculaires. samenvatting:	Die Ausstellung 'Homosexualität_en', die zeitgleich im Schwulen Museum* und im Deutschen Historischen Museum zu sehen ist, und der vorliegende Begleitband geben einen Überblick über den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Homosexualität und Geschlecht unter Aspekten sozialer, juristischer und wissenschaftlicher Unterdrückung. Zugleich dokumentieren sie die dauerhaften Kämpfe um Gleichberechtigung und legen hier den Schwerpunkt auf die Entwicklung seit der Liberalisierung des § 175 im Jahr 1969 in der Bundesrepublik. Homosexualität, wie wir sie heute verstehen, begreift die Ausstellung als eine Erfindung der Moderne. Entsprechend zeigt sie die historische Entwicklung seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert und schließt mit einem umfangreichen Blick in die Gegenwart. Denn heute steht die Voraussetzung für Hetero- wie Homosexualität, nämlich die Annahme von nur zwei Geschlechtern, zur Debatte. Sie wird in kulturwissenschaftlichen wie politischen Diskussionen zugunsten einer Vielfalt von geschlechtlichen Identitäten in Frage gestellt. Während im Deutschen Historischen Museum die geschichtliche Perspektive auf Homosexualität im Zentrum steht, thematisieren im Schwulen Museum* zeitgenössische Kunstwerke den gegenwärtigen Umgang mit Sexualität und Geschlecht. Der vorliegende Band stellt eine spannende Begleitung, Ergänzung und gleichzeitig Zusammenfassung der Ausstellung dar.

samenvatting:	Legislation that applies to UK SRE currently advocates inclusive provision. Given the nonstatutory status of SRE, however, it is unclear how teachers incorporate sexual inclusivity, especially as research has shown that teachers' discursive practices can promote a heteronormative SRE climate (Renn, 2010). Using a discursive psychological approach to analyze interview data, this study examined how teachers account for their provision as inclusive. It was revealed that even when promoting their inclusivity, teachers' SRE provision upholds heteronormativity. In doing this, they positioned LGB and same-sex practices outside of the classroom, potentially leaving these young people without a sufficient sex education. samenvatting:	Intimate partnerviolence (IPV) occurs in same-sex relationships at greater rates compared to heterosexual relationships. Despite these elevated same-sex IPV, limited research exists on risk and protective factors (e.g., gender expression) related to victimization, perpetration, and attitudes about violence. Due to scarce research on characteristics of same-sex IPV, the study measured differences between feminine and masculine lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) college students (N = 266) in their self-reported victimization, perpetration, and acceptance of IPV. Results identified that masculine LGBTQ-identifying students reported higher levels of victimization, perpetration, and acceptance of violence, providing implications when assessing for risk and protective factors of same-sex IPV.
