Queering and Transing the Great Lakes : Filipino/a Tomboy Masculinities and Manhoods across Waters  / Kale Bantigue Fajardo.

GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies, 20 (2014) 1-2 (jan), p. 115-140
bron: GLQ : A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies jaargang: 20 (2014) 1-2 (jan), p. 115-140
samenvatting: In "Queering and Transing the Great Lakes: Filipino/a Tomboy Masculinities and Manhoods across Waters," I use a Filipino/a queer trans (transnational/transgender/ transwaters) and postcolonial approach to examine Nice Rodriguez's semiautobiographical fiction in his/her collection of short stories, Throw It to the River (1993). Based in Toronto, Canada (on Lake Ontario), from 1988 to 2004, Rodriguez, a self-identified Filipino/a tomboy writer, addresses themes of migration, immigration, displacement, and class/poverty; the US-Marcos dictatorship; queer desire, love, sexuality; and tomboy masculinities and manhoods in his/her stories. By critically reading Rodriguez's stories, in this essay, I also theorize how the Great Lakes or Great Lakes region functions as a transnational water-based border zone or crosscurrents space in the "(Upper) Midwest" that links Filipino sites in the diaspora such as Duluth, Minnesota, and Toronto, as well as how these waters also connect with other waterscapes in the Philippines such as the Pasig River and Manila Bay. Performing the Bakla in The Care Divas : Crossdressing, Affective Labor, and the Glimpse of the Cosmopolitan  / Anril Pineda Tiatco.

Journal of Homosexuality, 62 (2015) 11 (nov), p. 1485-1511
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 62 (2015) 11 (nov), p. 1485-1511
samenvatting: This essay is a close reading of The Care Divas, a Filipino musical revolving around the struggle of five Filipino caregivers in Israel who also struggle with their sexual identities as bakla (Filipino homosexual). The analysis is both an affirmation and a critique of the performance. In the affirmation, the musical is argued to present a social reality that is intended for and in need of interrogation: the Filipino bakla. The musical implicitly features the bakla as a cosmopolitan. At the outset, this cosmopolitan disposition comes from the fact that the characters are migrant workers (caregivers). But more importantly, the cosmopolitan character is from a responsibility toward the other anchored within a genuine caring as implicated in the affective labor of these caregiver characters. In the critique, the essay marks some problematic limitations in the treatment of the bakla. In doing so, the musical, despite its attempt to present a social reality, is a problem play, a social drama touching social issues - realistic in approach, but the representation seems like an editorial. In the final analysis, The Care Divas is argued to seemingly fail because artists are not able to see the complexity of their chosen subject in a bigger picture. Migrant workers and LGBT activism: A comparative study of Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong  / Francisca Yuenki Lai.

Sexualities (2024) 1-2, p. 113-135
bron: Sexualities (2024) 1-2 , p. 113-135
samenvatting: Situating LGBT activism in a gendered, Asian migratory context, this study asks why and how LGBT migrant workers are able to organize themselves and come out publicly as lesbians, bisexual women, or transgender people in Hong Kong. Which factors are enablers for this phenomenon? A comparison of two migrant groups, namely, the Filipinos and Indonesians, who reside in the same city, will shed light on both the commonalities and diversities of their understanding of LGBT rights as well as their approaches for engaging in the LGBT movement. The study examines the different immersed contexts of the two migrant groups rather than homogenizing "migrant domestic worker" as a universal description of these women. The study adopts an intersectional approach to examine how multiple subject positions, including gender, race, class, and non-citizen status, affect migrant domestic workers who have a same-sex relationship in the host city as well as their practices and activism. Besides, it also adopts an inter-Asia approach to shed light on the flows of knowledge as well as inequalities among Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Indonesia and provide insights into how LGBT activism in Asia is culturally hybrid and diasporic. Qualitative research methods, including participant observation and in-depth interviews, were conducted from 2016 to 2018. I attended LGBT parades and events and conducted in-depth interviews with three Filipinos, two Indonesians, and two Hong Kong people. I also used data from my earlier field work in 2010 to 2012.
