samenvatting: Guidance for counselors working with transsexuals: men who want to be women, and women who want to be men. While transsexualism has always been part of the human experience, only recently have people "trapped in the wrong body" sought psychological care in large numbers. This book provides background about this condition, enabling clinicians to help people undergoing gender transition as they deal with hormonal treatments, legal dilemmas, surgical options, family destabilization, and work-related issues. An accessible book with little or no trade jargon used.

Same-Sex Cultures and Sexualities : An Anthropological Reader  /

ed. by Jennifer Robertson.Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2005 - ix, 310 p.
uitgave: Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2005 - ix, 310 p.
annotatie: Bibliogr.: passim.

samenvatting: This book demonstrates the centrality of sex, gender, and sexuality to theories of human behaviors and practices. It moves beyond other 'lesbian and gay studies' readers by presenting a broader view of the significance of studying same-sex cultures and sexualities across cultures. It offers readings from all four subfields of anthropology: cultural, biological, linguistic, and archaeological (along with historical and applied anthropology). It includes discussion of biotechnology and bioethics, health and illness, language, ethnicity, identity, politics, post-colonialism, kinship, development, and policymaking.

bron: Gay News jaargang: 22 (2015) 286 (jun), p. 30-33

Out of the Closet : Representation of Homosexuals and Lesbians in Modern Arabic Literature  / Hanadi Al-Samman.

Journal of Arabic Literature, 39 (2008), p. 270-310
bron: Journal of Arabic Literature jaargang: 39 (2008), p. 270-310
samenvatting: Although a great deal of research and criticism has been done on homoerotic desire in Arabo-medieval adab literature, very little has been written on its representation in modern Arabic literature. In order to address this scholarly gap, my study poses the following questions: why is there an increase of homosexual and lesbian characters, at this contemporary juncture, in Arabic fiction? And what are the effects of such an exposure on the status of Arab gay rights? I argue that depictions of male homosexuality in contemporary texts draw on power dialectics of master/slave, active/passive and local/colonial, and as such reflect a sense of overall powerlessness, inferiority and alienation from the political process, while underscoring the Arab male?s loss of manhood and of self. In contrast, female homosexuality remains locked into traditional, heterocentric discourse which claims that lesbianism exists only as a prelude to, or as a temporary replacement of "normative" heterosexuality, thus undermining the validity of lesbian body politics. Contrary to the medieval tradition which allowed more fluidity in the depiction of same-sex definitions and practices, and acknowledged the variants of homoerotic desire and action, contemporary Arab cultural and literary engagements of the topic overlook the biological aspect of this desire. Furthermore, they project gay encounters as a symptom of the social deterioration caused by political and economic oppression of the Arab citizen. I conclude that more attention must be given to the biological essence of sexual differentiation, to the body politics rather than gender politics, if the emergence of a recognized, outspoken Arab homosexual or lesbian identity is ever to be realized.

Sex-Partner Roles in Homoerotic Relations : An Attempt of Classification  / Jerzy Adam Kowalski.

Journal of Homosexuality, 63 (2016) 1 (jan), p. 87-102
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 63 (2016) 1 (jan), p. 87-102
samenvatting: The attempt is made to initially arrange in the terms of methodology the area of the research on partner roles in homoerotic relations. These issues have been noticed very early in human history (e.g., different roles performed or bimodal polarization), but only recently has science become interested in this subject. It is suggested to cover all such roles by the term sex-partner roles (SPR) instead of various other terms used and to classify them according to the ethological evolutionary approach into the appetitive and consummatory SPR. Further details of the division are discussed, and the utility of such classification is marked. [Copies are available at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00918369.2015.1078639 ]

Sexuality and its nuances : On Magnus Hirschfeld's sexual ethnology and China's sapiential heritage  / J. Edgar Bauer.

Anthropological Notebooks, 17 (2011) 1, p. 5-27
bron: Anthropological Notebooks jaargang: 17 (2011) 1 , p. 5-27
samenvatting: Between November 1930 and March 1932, German-Jewish sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-11935) undertook a trip around the world, eventually visiting the United States (where he was greeted as the 'Dr. Einstein of sex'), Japan, China, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Egypt, and Palestine. The resulting travel report, entitled Weltreise eines Sexualforschers (1933), is generally considered one of the foundational texts of the then-emerging discipline of sexual ethnology, and comprises the first non-Eurocentric, anti-colonialist critique of Asian cultures from a sexological perspective. Taking into account Hirschfeld's overarching design to dissolve close schemes of sexual, racial and cultural taxonomies, the study focuses on his assessment of China's religiously neutral, sober approach of sexual realities as 'world-wide exception' intimately connected to its Confucian and Taoistic heritage, and resonating with the core premises of his Spinozian-inspired and Darwinian-based sexology. Notwithstanding his praise of Chinese sexual realism, however, Hirschfeld argued that China's sexual mores (Sitten) - like all other sexual mores to date - fail to suffice the criteria of a universally valid sexual morality (Sittlichkeit). While the binary schemes of sexual distribution on which sexual mores are preponderantly grounded misconstrue the complexities of individual sexualities and foster, as compensation, the escapism into the non-constraints of other-worldly utopias, Hirschfeld's postulation of potentially infinite, uniquely nuanced sexualities leads to a radical blueprint of intra-historic sexual emancipation.
