HIV Survivors and the '16 Election  / Brian Bromberger.

Gay & Lesbian Review, 23 (2016) 5 (sep-oct), p. 12-14
bron: Gay & Lesbian Review jaargang: 23 (2016) 5 (sep-oct), p. 12-14
samenvatting: This year marks the 35th anniversary of the first official reporting of the AIDS epidemic. On June 5,1981, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported cases of the rare lung infection in five young gay men in L.A. "I'm the luckiest unlucky person in the world. No one wants to be the last man standing," reflected former Mr. Gay Colorado Peter Greene, one of the eight long-term HIV survivors from the San Francisco Bay area, featured in the new documentary Last Men Standing. As it makes all too clear, being a survivor comes with financial, physical and emotional wounds. How will HIV issues play out in the November election? Hillary Clinton's website has a whole page dedicated to how she would fight the desease, while Donald Trump has a less progressive platform on HIV, since there is no mention of HIV issues on his website at all, nor has he discussed these issues during any of his campaigh appearances.

The Gay Community Response to the Emergence of AIDS in Ireland : Activism, Covert Policy, and the Significance of an "Invisible Minority"  / Ann Nolan.

Journal of Policy History, 30 (2018) 1 (jan), p. 105-127
bron: Journal of Policy History jaargang: 30 (2018) 1 (jan), p. 105-127
samenvatting: Abstract: The first response to AIDS in Ireland emerged from within a radical, socialist, and predominantly nationalist wing of the gay rights movement in 1985. At a time when homosexual acts were criminalized, the Irish state operated a policy of protracted nonengagement with Gay Health Action, while covertly supporting selected health-promotion activities. As international momentum unified around a response to the AIDS crisis characterized by value-neutral public health principles, the Irish State, and particularly the statutory health sector, was compelled to balance the views of a conservative voting majority at home with the liberal consensus that was defining the response internationally. AIDS was a catalyst for change throughout the world and Gay Health Action was at the forefront of that transformative movement in Ireland. At the outbreak of AIDS, the gay community was an "invisible minoriyt" that by 1990 had pushed the boundaries of sexual health discourse to herald a more liberal age.

samenvatting: Survey report of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic specifically on the lives of intersex people and their families in Europe. Many surveys on the impact of Covid-19 were developed and launched after the beginning of the crisis, but even when they addressed areas that are of particular concern for intersex people and their families, the still prevailing lack of awareness about intersex people and intersex lives makes it challenging for these surveys to collect meaningful data or to collect data at all. Many intersex people have reported to OII Europe that the available Covid-19 surveys did not address the specific challenges created or aggravated for them by Covid-19.

Where are the Global COVID-19 Resources for LGBTI Communities?  / Dave Scamell ; Editors: Ezra Berkley Nepon, Matthew Hart.

samenvatting: This report analyzes 4,467 recorded COVID-19 resource mechanisms and finds that only one explicitly described funding to support LGBTI communities. None of the almost 3,000 recorded resource mechanisms tracked to the UN's Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) explicitly described funding to support LGBTI communities. The findings offer an opportunity to break down the invisibility of LGBTI issues within the international humanitarian system.

samenvatting: The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically shifted nearly all parts of life. For organizations working on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) people in the United States, it is clear that their financial outlooks and stability for 2021 will continue to be impacted by the pandemic. This report examines the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ and allied organizations. This report provides findings from the November 2020 survey in which organizations were asked to share their experiences during the year and their plans as they look forward to 2021. MAP received responses from 37 organizations to the November 2020 survey. A majority of the organizations are LGBTQ-focused, though they include advocacy organizations, community centers, legal groups, and research organizations.

samenvatting: This report's findings are based on a polling series called The Impact of Coronavirus on Households, conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (NPR/RWJF/Harvard). As reported by Harvard, "Interviews were conducted online and via telephone (cellphone and landline), July 1-August 3, 2020, among a nationally representative, probability-based sample of 3,454 adults age 18 or older in the U.S. Data collection was conducted in English and Spanish by SSRS (Glen Mills, PA), an independent research company. The margin of sampling error, including the design effect, was ±3.3 percentage points at the 95% confidence level for national data." Of the total sample of 3,454 adults, 353 identified as LGBTQ. This report details the experiences of those LGBTQ individuals and their households.

Study On The Impact of Covid-19 On The LGBTIQ Community In Rwanda.

samenvatting: Executive Summary: In many ways COVID-19 Pandemic has seriously affected vulnerable and marginalized groups. The pandemic has made a bad situation worse this study contributes to the growing base of evidence regarding the ways in which COVID-19 Pandemic has exacerbated existing disparities of vulnerable and marginalized groups in accessing essential services such as Health care services, sexual reproductive health and access to justice. Given the ongoing disparities experienced by marginalized and vulnerable populations, within and outside of the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to take actions to ensure that the needs of these groups are met. Our results in this research demonstrate a number of pressing unmet needs, especially for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer groups. However, with both immediate action and consistent, structural-level investment these inequities can be addressed, not only to ensure an appropriate COVID-19 response and recovery process but also to ensure long-term equity for vulnerable and marginalized populations in Rwanda.
