Cultural factors influencing HIV Risk Behavior among Dominicans in New York City  / Michele G. Shedlin, Sherry Deren.

Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse, 1 (2002) 1, p. 69-92
bron: Journal of Ethnicity in Substance Abuse jaargang: 1 (2002) 1 , p. 69-92
samenvatting: Hispanics in the United States have disproportionately high rates of HIV. The existence of ethnically and culturally diverse Hispanic communities indicate that qualitative research on HIV-related attitudes and behaviors within subgroups is needed to develop successful interventions. Findings from interviews with 20 Dominicans involved with drug-related or prostitution-related activities in New York City are presented in terms of predominant cultural influences and specific issues regarding prostitution, drug use, and HIV/AIDS. Several directions for interventions in the Dominican community are indicated, e.g.,outreach efforts sensitive to the stigmatization of behaviors such as needle use and homosexuality, and the encouragement of prostitutes to use condoms with their partners as well as clients. Additional information regarding such are as as contraception, family planning, and drug treatment services is needed within this community. A knowledge of cultural norms can serve as a foundation tor these intervention and education efforts.

Partner Selection among Latino Immigrant Men Who Have Sex with Men  / Fernanda T. Bianchi ... [et al.].

Archives of Sexual Behavior, 39 (2010) 6 (nov), p. 1321-1330
bron: Archives of Sexual Behavior jaargang: 39 (2010) 6 (nov), p. 1321-1330
samenvatting: This qualitative study explored partner selection in a sample of immigrant Latino men who have sex with men (MSM). In-depth interviews were conducted with men living in the greater New York metropolitan area who had been born in Brazil (n = 10), Colombia (n = 14), or the Dominican Republic (n = 9). One focus group was conducted with MSM from each of the three countries (9 Brazilian, 11 Colombian, and 5 Dominican participants). A grounded theory approach revealed three main themes relating to partner selection. The first concerned stereotypes of how Latino and Anglo-American men tend to behave in their sexual encounters and relationships. The participants perceived Latinos to be more affectionate and passionate, whereas they saw Anglo-American men as more independent and practical. These cultural discrepancies sometimes resulted in a preference for Latino partners. A second theme concerned stereotypes of the national groups, including expectations that Brazilians would be sexy and sensual and that Dominicans would have large penises. As found in other research on MSM of color, ethnic and national stereotypes were associated with experiences of sexual objectification. The third theme addressed the importance of masculine characteristics in sexual attraction and partner selection. Negative feelings towards effeminate men who did not conform to normative male physical or behavioral presentation reflect a stigma found inside and outside of the gay community. These findings suggest that gender and ethnic stereotypes play an important role in shaping partner choice and have implications for sexual risk and relationship formation.

samenvatting: Tacit Subjects is a pioneering analysis of how gay immigrant men of colour negotiate race, sexuality, and power in their daily lives. Drawing on ethnographic research with Dominicans in New York City, Carlos Ulises Decena explains that while the men who shared their life stories with him may self-identify as gay, they are not the liberated figures of traditional gay migration narratives. Decena contends that in migrating to Washington Heights, a Dominican enclave in New York, these men moved from one site to another within an increasingly transnational Dominican society. Many of them migrated and survived through the resources of their families and broader communities. Explicit acknowledgment or discussion of their homosexuality might rupture these crucial social and familial bonds. Yet some of Decena's informants were sure that their sexuality was tacitly understood by their family members or others close to them. Analyzing their recollections about migration, settlement, masculinity, sex, and return trips to the Dominican Republic, Decena describes how the men at the centre of Tacit Subjects contest, reproduce, and reformulate Dominican identity in New York. Their stories reveal how differences in class, race, and education shape their relations with fellow Dominicans. They also offer a view of "gay New York" that foregrounds the struggles for respect, belonging, and survival within a particular immigrant community.
