samenvatting:	Make Your Own History: Documenting Feminist and Queer Activism in the 21st Century addresses the practical and theoretical challenges and advantages of researching, documenting, and archiving recent and contemporary activists in the feminist and queer movements. In the last few decades, the place and practice of activism has shifted from a physical "headquarters" where activists convene to plan and strategize, to the reality where planning happens at various desks and kitchen tables across the country (or world) and activists then convene at one site for an action (the prime example of this being the WTO protest in Seattle in 1999). So much of the work is taking place in the digital environment and/or within smaller do-it-yourself (DIY) and anarchist subcultures where ideas are often shared via zines and other ephemeral materials. The challenge of the archivist and the scholar, whose work is traditionally paper-based, is to keep up with the changing modes of communication of these individuals and organizations and to make sure these activists' work is not left out of the historical record. Activists, archivists, librarians, and scholars address the following issues and topics: the practical material challenges of documenting and archiving contemporary activism; theoretical perspectives and conversations; online communities and communications; "third wave" feminism/youth and queer cultures/subcultures; the move from paper to digital archives and documents; zines; and the work of activists who employ creative/artistic/cultural approaches to work for social justice.

samenvatting:	This essay reflects on archival digitalization and its implications for researchers interested in historicizing queerness. The essay seeks a conversation about how new archival tools boost our access to particular constructions of subjectivity while simultaneously limiting the extent to which we can discern the parameters of queerness. It draws on the author's recent work with archives of several state security agencies from Brazil's military regime (1964-85). The collections have undergone digitalization, such that access is now largely computerized. Finding aids rely not only on archivists' descriptions but on optical character recognition. The essay offers some analysis of the role of identity politics in shaping researchers' frameworks, as well as those of historical subjects, and of what such processes do to the space and practice of the queer archive.

samenvatting:	In 2007, CSW commenced a relationship with the Mazer archives through a two-year UCLA community partnership grant. Titled The ?Access Mazer? Project: Organizing and Digitizing the Lesbian Feminist Archive in Los Angeles, the grant provided funds for CSW to process, describe, create finding aids for and digitize five large L.A. based Mazer collections. This collaboration also led to this publication of which Part I presents short essays from participants in the project that address topics ranging from the project?s history to its legal articulation to the distinct pleasures, insights, and challenges that arise from working with the individual collections. Each essayist has engaged in one or more of the tasks this project entailed: grants writing, fundraising, administering, negotiating, managing, collecting, processing, describing, preserving, digitizing, and housing these collections. Part II presents abstracts of all 83 collections, together with images and representative documents curated by project personnel. Here, readers can sample the range and depth of the collections themselves. The abstracts gesture to the individual lives, the political and social groups and issues, the myriad types of documents and memorabilia, the literature, images, and social documentation produced by lesbians and feminists whose collections are included in this project. This section registers the material value of and the life in these collections, the scholarly opportunities and resources they afford, and the excitement, pleasure, and insight we have all experienced engaging with these materials and bringing this project to fruition. It makes clear why archives, and lesbian archives in particular, matter.

samenvatting:	In the 21st century, there are more LGBT information resources than ever before. The challenges that arise both from the explosion of born-digital materials and the transformation of materials from physical to electronic formats has implications for access to these resources for future generations. Along with preservation concerns, making these numerous digital LGBT resources available to users becomes more difficult when they swim in an ocean of websites, EBooks, digitized objects, and other digital resources. Librarians, archivists, and museum curators must engage in a range of new digital practices to preserve and promote these numerous LGBT resources. A "digital practice" in libraries, archives, and museums includes, but is not limited to, the digitization of physical objects; the creation of online resources and services that improve access to these objects; the use of online catalogs, databases, and metadata to categorize such objects; and the online social media and Web 2.0 tools used to connect users to these resources. Information professionals engaged in digital practices must also understand the information needs, online searching behaviors, and online communication styles of their patrons in order to make them aware of the digital resources that may be of use to them. This is the first book to specifically address the digital practices of LGBT librarians, archivists, and museum curators, as well as the digital practices of seekers and users of LGBT resources and services. More broadly, this collection aims to address these issues in the context of the technical, social, economic, legal, and political challenges of creating LGBT-specific digital collections, electronic resources and services.

The methods used internationally to collect cultural heritage and other historical material are shifting, as new media have added important innovative tools for gathering, preserving, and sharing information around the globe. In light of our increasingly multicultural societies and the expanding "digital divide," we need new and more inclusive approaches to the collection of cultural heritage. This means that critical reflection on both the contents of collections and methods of acquisition is crucial. The International Information Center and Archives for the Womens Movement (IIAV) in Amsterdam provides a case study in how to approach these issues. It considered such questions as how to make optimal use of new media, and whose histories should be represented in its archives. In Traveling Heritages, international and national heritage experts from academic, library, and archival professions reflect upon these questions, offering new perspectives on documenting womens histories.

samenvatting:	Through consistent volunteer participation from lesbian communities, and an uncompromising grassroots approach, the structure and heritage of the Lesbian Herstory Archives has developed a useable formula for archiving lesbian life. This essay outlines the digital collections of the archives. It describes the efforts put forth by the all-volunteer collective, and their dedication toward making materials accessible through the use of digital technology to preserve, catalog and exhibit lesbian herstory. It contains interviews with the "Archivettes" Saskia Scheffer, Rachel Corbmann and Maxime Wolfe who are responsible for the Photos, Online Public Catalogue and the Audio and provides examples of LHA digital practices in the creation and maintenance of the photocollection, OPAC and Audio Tape Digitization project.

samenvatting:	The LGBT Religious Archives Network (LGBT-RAN) is a recent, innovative venture launched to encourage organizations and activists to preserve their histories and thereby to support and encourage scholarly study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) religious movements around the world. LGBT-RAN can best be understood as a 'virtual' archive. It is not a physical repository that collects and preserves papers and records. Instead LGBT-RAN is an online resource center that encourages the preservation of history and makes historical information easily accessible through its web site. Recognizing that history is written from the perspective of those who preserve their records, LGBT-RAN?s overarching purpose is to ensure the preservation and accessibility of the voices and experiences of a great diversity of LGBT religious leaders and groups. LGBT-RAN?s development has been possible only because of the information technology revolution of recent decades that provides widespread and easy access to a large volume of data at a low cost. While LGBT-RAN was an early provider of digital historical information, now virtually every library, archive and museum makes extensive information available online. LGBT-RAN primarily assists LGBT religious leaders and groups in determining how to preserve their records and papers in appropriate repositories. Secondly, LGBT-RAN provides a digital online information clearinghouse for these archival collections, and other LGBT religious history resources for historians, researchers and other interested persons.
