Fictions of Masculinity : Crossing Cultures, Crossing Sexualities  /

ed. by Peter F. Murphy.New York, NY [etc.]: New York University Press, 1994 - xiv, 324 p.

samenvatting: Peter Murphy has assembled an innovative, challenging, and important set of contributions to a growing field of inquiry into constructions of masculinities in literature, inspired principally by feminist and gay studies. Illuminatingly crossing lines of genders, sexualities, cultures, and methodologies, Fictions of Masculinity greatly advances our understanding of representations of men, masculinities, misandry, and misogyny in a wide range of literary works and genres, and helps us to imagine (and thereby ultimately bring about) alternative constructions.

The good, the bad or the queer : Articulations of queer resistance in The Wire  / Frederik Dhaenens, Sofie Van Bauwel.

Sexualities, 15 (2012) 5/6 (sep), p. 702-717
bron: Sexualities jaargang: 15 (2012) 5/6 (sep), p. 702-717
samenvatting: Although the representation of queer characters has grown significantly in contemporary western television, most of the popular fiction series are still dominated by hegemonic heteronormative discourses. However, this article demonstrates how the critically acclaimed series The Wire, through its subversive articulations of queer characters, resists heteronormativity. This implies that the series can be read as a defiance of an essentialist, hierarchical and oppositional way of thinking. Our textual thematic analysis reveals how the series uses both deconstructive practices that expose the way heteronormative practices function, and reconstructive practices offering counter-discourses that transgress societal assumptions about gender, sexuality and identity.

Going beyond the system?

Empire of Desires : History and Queer Theory in an Age of Global Affect  / Howard Hsueh-Hao Chiang.

Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies, 2 (2008/2009) 3, p. 1-2
bron: Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies jaargang: 2 (2008/2009) 3 , p. 1-2
samenvatting: This paper surveys the current state of queer studies and argues that epistemological historicism be brought back to bear on queer theoretical analyses, particularly in order to address the challenges of accounting for the globalization and transnationalism of sexuality. The paper proposes that this can be done by, first, "giving up" certain intellectual preoccupations, including the interpretation of the nineteenth-century "Great Paradigm Shift" as a historical succession of sexual "acts" by sexual "identities," the conviction that whatever modes of temporality queer theory argues for ultimately lack coherency or some kind of linear regularity, and the idealist assumption that whatever queer theorists are deconstructing, denormalizing, or denaturalizing can be somehow conceptually sealed from their simultaneous constructions, normalizations, and naturalizations. Allowing history to serve some trans-formative purposes for queer theory can be accomplished accordingly by "opening up" the parallel doors, such as by bringing epistemological issues back into the theorization of queer subjectivities, by making generalizations more willingly about changes and continuities across not just geographical space but also time, and by being more ethically concerned with the imperialist nature and consequences of queer theoretical critique.

Geschlechtereventualitäten: eine sexualpädagogische Dekonstruktion postmoderner Geschlechterbeziehungen  / Elisabeth Tuider.

bron:
3. "Geschlechter-even-Dualitäten" "Even" im Sinne von gleich oder gerade. Also ist Geschlecht gleich dual, ist ein Gegensatz, eine entgegengesetzte Zweiheit. Und dies läuft auf die Feststellung einer Differenz hinaus: Frauen und Männer sind eben doch grundsätzlich unterschiedlich, oder, wie Loriot es sagt: Männer und Frauen passen einfach nicht zueinander".

Mêmeté and the Critique of Sexual Difference : On Monique Wittig's Deconstruction of the Symbolic Order and the Site of the Neuter  / J. Edgar Bauer.

CTheory 12-08-2005
bron: CTheory 12-08-2005
samenvatting: The "unquestionable certainty" to which Sigmund Freud refers in the motto has seldom been so consistently and radically challenged as in the work of the lesbian author Monique Wittig (1935-2003). A brilliant avant-garde writer and poet who was awarded at age 28 the Prix Médicis in France for her first novel, L'Opoponax, Wittig immigrated to the United States in 1976, where she began expounding her "materialist lesbianism" in essays that have attained canonical status within feminist studies and queer theory. Both in her fictional and theoretical writing, Wittig deploys critical strategies aiming at the exposure and disruption of the male-centered, binary scheme of sex and gender that she considers a most efficacious subterfuge of the "straight mind" designed to subjugate women and disempower sexual minorities. Key to her deconstruction of the male/female divide is the dismantling of the symbolic order ensuing from phallic hegemony by means of her frank, literal "reading" of the lesbian body.

Decolonizing Trans/Gender Studies?: Teaching Gender, Race, and Sexuality in Times of the Rise of the Global Right  / Alyosxa Tudor.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 8 (2021) 2 (may), p. 238-256
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 8 (2021) 2 (may), p. 238-256
samenvatting: In this article, the author argues that a decolonial perspective on gender means conceptualizing it as always already trans. The object of investigation is gender as a category and gender studies as a field of knowledge. To discuss what decolonizing trans/gender studies in Europe could mean, the author aims to bring different strands together that have been held apart so far: resistance against global attacks on gender studies, resistance against transphobic feminism, and the ''decolonising the curriculum'' movement in the United Kingdom. A critical focus on Eurocentric knowledge and truth claims means to define Europe as a complex set of geopolitical, historical, and epistemological processes and not just as a neutral location. At British universities, a mostly student-led movement has started to emerge that fights for decolonizing higher education. This movement is inspired by transnational student movements like Rhodes/Fees Must Fall in South Africa and calls for challenging racist, colonialist, nationalist, and neoliberal paradigms in knowledge production by addressing both issues of epistemology and access to higher education. Applying central political claims of the ''decolonising the curriculum'' movement, the author explores potentials and challenges of the task of decolonizing trans/gender studies in Europe and the global North. The author's intervention opens up a discussion on how to conceptualize knowledge on transgender with a central focus on decolonial and transnational perspectives.

Black Trans Feminism  /

Marquis Bey.Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2022 - xiv, 304 p.
uitgave: Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2022 - xiv, 304 p.
annotatie: Bibliogr.: p. 263-281.

samenvatting: In Black Trans Feminism Marquis Bey offers a meditation on blackness and gender nonnormativity in ways that recalibrate traditional understandings of each. Theorizing black trans feminism from the vantages of abolition and gender radicality, Bey articulates blackness as a mutiny against racializing categorizations; transness as a nonpredetermined, wayward, and deregulated movement that works toward gender's destruction; and black feminism as an epistemological method to fracture hegemonic modes of racialized gender. In readings of the essays, interviews, and poems of Alexis Pauline Gumbs, jayy dodd, Venus Di'Khadija Selenite, and Dane Figueroa Edidi, Bey turns black trans feminism away from a politics of gendered embodiment and toward a conception of it as a politics grounded in fugitivity and the subversion of power. Together, blackness and transness actualize themselves as on the run from gender. In this way, Bey presents black trans feminism as a mode of enacting the wholesale dismantling of the world we have been given.
