Voor de familie Lauritzen lonkt de lucratieve handel in vastgoed, die gouden bergen belooft. Voor de lezer begint Guillou herkenbare tijden te naderen. Tegelijkertijd nadert met dit op een na laatste deel ook het einde van een meeslepend epos over drie broers uit een klein vissersdorp in Noorwegen en hun nazaten. Jan Guillou voert de lezers langs kolonialisme, wereldoorlogen, verzet, spionage en protestbewegingen in de meest bewogen en bloedigste eeuw uit de menselijke geschiedenis.

samenvatting: This bachelor thesis researches the way Dutch transgenders and crossdressers construct their identity and the influence extern categorisation, stereotypes and the way transgenders define themselves have on this process. My findings point to a gender hegemony in which people who do not fit the role of either a biological male or female are abnormalized to confirm the longstanding gender boundaries which people in our western civilization have infringed upon one another. To abnormalize the group of transgenders ? mostly by categorizing them as perverts - is to place them on the outside of our society, which prevents them from intruding the ethics and conventions that have been established throughout the previous centuries.

samenvatting: 'Festive transvestism' is an increasingly visible cross-dressing practice performed by young people in the Southern parts of contemporary Ghana. Based on participant observation in four cross-dressing events, 15 individual interviews and a focus-group discussion, festive cross-dressing is understood as a contemporary ritual that mainly serves the purpose of reinforcing and reproducing gender binaries as well as heteronormativity in Ghanaian society. Nevertheless cross-dressing events also provide a subjective, creative and exploratory space - although temporary and circumscribed - for the transvestites as well as for the spectators to deconstruct sex, gender and sexuality through the performativity of transvestism. The opening of this exploratory space is made possible by the liminality of the social category of youth in Ghana, which grants young people, especially young men, more liberty and (gender) flexibility. Finally, the paper challenges the widely spread Western perception that feminine men and cross-dressers are necessarily homosexual by resituating the concept of homosexuality within the context of Ghanaian society, where it has recently started to occupy the public space.

'No Tears for Alden' : Black Female Impersonators as 'Outsiders Within' in the Baltimore Afro-American  / Kim Gallon.

samenvatting: On New Year's Eve in 1938, a national black newspaper, the Baltimore Afro-American, announced that famed Washington, DC, black female impersonator Alden Garrison had died. He was only thirty years old. Known for his appearances in nightclubs and stage performances in Baltimore, Atlantic City, and New York, Garrison was considered to be one of the most successful female impersonators on the Eastern Seaboard. Despite Garrison's fame, the Afro-American lamented that there would be 'No Tears for Alden,' as he died alone and penniless in Gallinger Hospital in Washington, DC. In fact, the paper disclosed that just a few 'intimate friends' attended his funeral service. Nonetheless, a procession of curiosity seekers paraded by the casket prior to his last rites, hoping to get a glimpse of the performer who was largely known through coverage in the Afro-American. The popularity of female impersonators and gay men, often identified as the 'pansy craze' of the interwar period, helps to explain the interest in Garrison's body despite the fact that he had fallen into obscurity by the time of his death.
