Partner Selection among Latino Immigrant Men Who Have Sex with Men  / Fernanda T. Bianchi ... [et al.].

Archives of Sexual Behavior, 39 (2010) 6 (nov), p. 1321-1330
bron: Archives of Sexual Behavior jaargang: 39 (2010) 6 (nov), p. 1321-1330
samenvatting: This qualitative study explored partner selection in a sample of immigrant Latino men who have sex with men (MSM). In-depth interviews were conducted with men living in the greater New York metropolitan area who had been born in Brazil (n = 10), Colombia (n = 14), or the Dominican Republic (n = 9). One focus group was conducted with MSM from each of the three countries (9 Brazilian, 11 Colombian, and 5 Dominican participants). A grounded theory approach revealed three main themes relating to partner selection. The first concerned stereotypes of how Latino and Anglo-American men tend to behave in their sexual encounters and relationships. The participants perceived Latinos to be more affectionate and passionate, whereas they saw Anglo-American men as more independent and practical. These cultural discrepancies sometimes resulted in a preference for Latino partners. A second theme concerned stereotypes of the national groups, including expectations that Brazilians would be sexy and sensual and that Dominicans would have large penises. As found in other research on MSM of color, ethnic and national stereotypes were associated with experiences of sexual objectification. The third theme addressed the importance of masculine characteristics in sexual attraction and partner selection. Negative feelings towards effeminate men who did not conform to normative male physical or behavioral presentation reflect a stigma found inside and outside of the gay community. These findings suggest that gender and ethnic stereotypes play an important role in shaping partner choice and have implications for sexual risk and relationship formation.

Resilience and migration : Experiences of same-sex binational couples in Canada  / Nadine Nakamura, Anusha Kassan, Megan Suehn.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services, 29 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 201-219
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 29 (2017) 2 (apr-jun), p. 201-219
samenvatting: A phenomenological research design was employed to investigate experiences of individuals in binational relationships who migrated to Canada with their partners due to discriminatory immigration laws that prevented them from remaining together legally in the United States. Participants (N = 17) were American (N = 7), British (N = 2), French (N = 2), Canadian (N = 1), Chinese (N = 1), Colombian (N = 1), Dutch (N = 1), and two with dual citizenship. This article centers on participants' experiences of resiliency throughout the migration process to Canada. Results revealed resilience in three overarching categories: building a life in Canada, re-careering in Canada, and creating social support networks. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

A Cup of Water Under My Bed : A Memoir  /

Daisy Hernandez.Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 2014 - xii, 185 p.
uitgave: Boston, MA: Beacon Press, 2014 - xii, 185 p.
ISBN: 9780807062920
samenvatting: In this lyrical, coming-of-age memoir, Daisy Hernández (1975) chronicles what the women in her Cuban-Colombian family taught her about love, money, and race. Her mother warns her about envidia and men who seduce you with pastries, while one tía bemoans that her niece is turning out to be 'una india' instead of an American. Another auntie instructs that when two people are close, they are bound to become like uña y mugre, fingernails and dirt, and that no, Daisy?s father is not godless. He?s simply praying to a candy dish that can be traced back to Africa. These lessons-rooted in women?s experiences of migration, colonization, y cariño- define in evocative detail what it means to grow up female in an immigrant home. In one story, Daisy sets out to defy the dictates of race and class that preoccupy her mother and tías, but dating women and transmen, and coming to identify as bisexual, leads her to unexpected questions. In another piece, NAFTA shuts local factories in her hometown on the outskirts of New York City, and she begins translating unemployment forms for her parents, moving between English and Spanish, as well as private and collective fears. In prose that is both memoir and commentary, Daisy reflects on reporting for the New York Times as the paper is rocked by the biggest plagiarism scandal in its history and plunged into debates about the role of race in the newsroom.
