Meanwhile ... : graphic short stories about everyday queer life in Southern and East Africa

samenvatting: "The lived realities of young queer people in African contexts are not well documented. On the one hand, homophobic political discourse tends to portray queer people as 'deviant' and 'unAfrican', and on the other, public health research and advocacy often portrays them as victims of violence and HIV. Of course, young queer lives are far more diverse, rich and complex. For this reason, the Qintu Collab was formed to allow young queer people from a few African countries to come together, share experiences and create context-specific, queer-positive media that documents relatable stories about and for queer African youth. We see this as a necessary step in developing a complex archive of queer African life, whilst also personalising queer experiences and challenging prejudicial stereotypes. The Collab is made up of eighteen queer youth from Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe, two academics, three artists and a journalist. We first worked in small groups in each country through a range of creative participatory methods that focused on personal reflection and story-telling. Young people created personal timelines, and made visual maps of their bodies, relationships, and spaces. We then had group discussions about themes that emerged to help decide what to include in the comic works. At the end of 2018, we all came together in Nairobi, Kenya, for a week to collaborate on this comic book, and a set of podcasts on similar topics. We worked through various ways of telling stories, and developed significant themes, including family, religion and spirituality, social and online queer spaces, sex, and romantic relationships. Each young person created a script and laid out the scenes for a comic that told a short story from their lives. They then worked one-on-one with an artist to finesse those ideas into a workable comic, and the artists thereafter developed each story through multiple rounds of feedback from the story's creator and the rest of the group."

Human rights and homosexuality in Southern Africa  / Chris Dunton and Mai Palmberg.

Current African Issues (1996) 19 (June), p. 1-41
bron: Current African Issues (1996) 19 (June), p. 1-41

The well-being of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in Botswana  / V.J. Ehlers, A. Zuyderduin, M.J. Oosthuizen.

Journal of Advanced Nursing, 35 (2001) 6, p. 848-856
bron: Journal of Advanced Nursing jaargang: 35 (2001) 6 , p. 848-856
samenvatting: Aims. To investigate the level of weIl-being of gays, lesbians and bisexuals (GLBs) in Botswana, how this level of weIl-being could be promoted and whether their health care needs were met by health care professionals. Rationale. It is illegal to engage in same-sex activities in Botswana, punishable by imprisonment. Although Botswana's citizens have one of Africa's best health care systems, little is known about the health status, health care needs and general well-being of Botswana's GLBs. This survey attempted to uncover some of these potential health care needs, impacting on the GLBs' well-being. Design/methods. The research framework adopted was the health and human rights approach, placing dignity before rights. A survey design, with structured questionnaires, was used. Snow-ball sampling techniques were used. Results. Results indicated that varying degrees of distress were experienced by 64% of the GLBs in this study. The GLBs identified a need for human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) education and had concerns about their general health, discrimination against them and vulnerability to violence including sexual assaults. Conclusions. The well-being of the GLBs in Botswana was influenced by both positive internal acceptance of their sexual orientation and negative external acceptance by society. Health care professionals played insignificant roles in the promotion of LGB's well-being, and could make greater inputs into health education efforts, and more significant contributions towards enhancing the GLB's levels of weIl-being. Enhanced collaboration between health professionals and human rights activists are recommended to reduce violations of Botswana's GLBs' dignity and to improve their quality of life, including enhanced access to and utilization of health care services.

Covers a variety of human rights, anti gay- and sodomy laws, censorship, violence and torture, all whithin the justical systems in the countries mentioned above. Achieving an AIDS-Free generation for Gay men and other MSM in Southern Africa  / Owen Ryan ... [et al.].

thema:

  2. homoseksualiteit
samenvatting: The HIV epidemic among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Southern Africa is expanding. Prevention, treatment, and care programs funded to reverse the epidemic often neglect the MSM population. Stigma and discrimination against MSM flourish with impunity in countries that receive significant donor funding for HIV. National planning documents and donor funding agreements mention MSM, but little programming actually exists. Epidemiological surveillance that would help inform programs serving MSM lags far behind strategic information collected on other populations. Little to no attention is paid to the needs of transgender people. This is the current state of HIV among gay men, other MSM, and transgender individuals (GMT). While the global conversation focuses on novel approaches to HIV treatment and prevention, GMT struggle to obtain the most basic health services. They are isolated, criminalized, blackmailed, and beaten. Despite this, GMT communities in Southern Africa have shown great resilience and determination. In each country studied, numerous community-led programs supported by both large and small donors are making substantial inroads against pervasive stigma and discrimination. While the global conversation focuses on novel approaches to HIV treatment and prevention, GMT struggle to obtain the most basic health services. These are the findings of the second report in this series: Achieving an AIDS-Free Generation for Gay Men and Other MSM. Focused specifically on six countries in Southern Africa (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), this report describes the financing and implementation of programs for GMT in a region at the heart of the HIV epidemic through a combination of desk research and in-country consultations conducted by civil society advocates with implementers, policy makers, academics, and people living with HIV. These six countries have made significant progress in reducing the number of new HIV infections
