Raunch versus prude: contemporary sex blogs and erotic memoirs by women  / Kaye Mitchell.

Psychology and Sexuality, 3 (2012) 1 (jan), p. 12-25
bron: Psychology and Sexuality jaargang: 3 (2012) 1 (jan), p. 12-25
samenvatting: This article analyses two contemporary erotic memoirs by women, Belle de Jour's Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl and Abby Lee's Girl with a One-Track Mind, both of which began life as blogs. Situating them, briefly, in relation to previous erotic memoirs and fiction by women, I examine their transition from blog to book and consider the impact of new digital technologies upon female sexual self-narration. I examine the texts in the light of recent popular feminist writings on the sexualisation of girls and young women, and analyse both the books and original blogs' engagement with feminism, and their treatment of romance, lesbianism and the regulations governing female sexual conduct. This article evaluates the extent to which the boom in women's erotic memoirs (in book or blog form) is symptomatic of a persisting belief in sexuality as the truth of identity. Sexuality, as it is figured here, is still being positioned as 'the secret', as the essence or core of subjectivity, which perhaps explains why the memoir, as an attempt to communicate and constitute a 'self' through writing, has for women increasingly become the erotic memoir. This article concludes by asking to what extent this is both an undervaluation and an overvaluation of sexuality for women. Body Talk : Body Image Commentary on Queerty.com  / Joseph Schwartz and Josh Grimm.

Journal of Homosexuality, 63 (2016) 8 (aug), p. 1052-1067
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 63 (2016) 8 (aug), p. 1052-1067
samenvatting: In this study, we conducted a content analysis of 243 photographic images of men published on the gay male-oriented blog Queerty.com. We also analyzed 435 user-generated comments from a randomly selected 1-year sample. Focusing on images? body types, we found that the range of body types featured on the blog was quite narrow - the vast majority of images had very low levels of body fat and very high levels of muscularity. Users? body image-related comments typically endorsed and celebrated images; critiques of images were comparatively rare. Perspectives from objectification theory and social comparison theory suggest that the images and commentary found on the blog likely reinforce unhealthy body image in gay male communities. ''Americans Don't Want Cowboys to Be Gay" : ''Brokeback Mountain'' and the Oscars  / William Glass.

Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies, 2 (2007) 2, p. 1-11
bron: Interalia : A Journal of Queer Studies jaargang: 2 (2007) 2 , p. 1-11
samenvatting: When Crash was the surprise best picture winner at the 2006 Oscar ceremonies, a variety of explanations was offered for the upset over the pre-Oscar favorite, Brokeback Mountain. The purpose of the essay is not to evaluate the relative merits of either film as art nor to determine whether the Academy's rejection of Brokeback Mountain demonstrated Hollywood's latent homophobia, but rather to explore what the discussion over Crash's victory on the internet, in blogs, and newspapers, reveals about popular attitudes and perceptions concerning the place of gays and lesbians in American society. It is intended to be a snapshot of a particular moment, and that picture, not surprisingly reveals an America that is deeply ambivalent about homosexuality, even among the most politically liberal straight supporters of gay rights.

samenvatting: Media matter, particularly to social minorities like lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Rather than one homogenised idea of the 'global gay', what we find today is a range of historically and culturally specific expressions of gender and sexuality, which are reflected and explored across an ever increasing range of media outlets. This collection zooms in on a number of facets of this kaleidoscope, each chapter discussing the intersection of a particular European context and a particular medium with its affordances and limitations. While traditional mass media form the starting point of this book, the primary focus is on digital media such as blogs, social media and online dating sites. All contributions are based on recent, original empirical research, using a plethora of qualitative methods to offer a holistic view on the ways media matter to particular LGBTQ individuals and communities. Together the chapters cover the diversity of European countries and regions, of LGBTQ communities, and of the contemporary media ecology. Resisting the urge to extrapolate, they argue for specificity, contextualisation and a provincialized understanding of the connections between media, culture, gender and sexuality.

T4t Love-Politics: Monica Roberts's TransGriot and Love as a Theory of Justice  / V. Jo Hsu.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 9 (2022) 1 (feb), p. 101-118
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 9 (2022) 1 (feb), p. 101-118
samenvatting: This essay considers Monica Roberts's long-standing blog, TransGriot, as a model of T4t love-politics. Drawing from Jennifer Nash's work on Black feminism, the author argues that TransGriot centers interpersonal and intra- and intercommunal relationships as driving forces of social and systemic change. This approach to t4t enabled Roberts to center trans voices, trans needs, and trans thriving while also demanding accountability from all communities that intersect with the lives of Black trans women. What emerges is an understanding of justice as built and sustained by the difficult work of relating - of making ourselves vulnerable to, and bearing witness to, one another.
