Dangerous Liaisons : the American Religious Right & the criminalization of homosexuality in Belize  / Heidi Beirich.

samenvatting: During the month of July 2014, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and United and Strong, in collaboration with Groundation Grenada, Guyana Rainbow Foundation, J-FLAG, and United Belize Advocacy Movement, conducted the first-ever LGBTI-focused media-monitoring project in the Englishspeaking region. These groups monitored the media in five countries: Belize, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia. The results of the monitoring show that many media outlets reinforce negative stereotypes that can lead to violence against LGBTI people. Stories of importance about this community, policy issues and concerns about exclusion, or those that should depict them engaged in positive activities, were largely ignored by the media. Overall, the media coverage created an unbalanced, inaccurate and largely unflattering picture of the community.

The Lonely Fight Against Belize?s Antigay Laws : Can one challenge to a statute criminalizing sodomy create a domino effect in the Caribbean?  / Julia Scott.

New York Times 22-05-2015
bron: New York Times 22-05-2015
samenvatting: In Belize - a small Anglophone Caribbean nation tucked into the eastern flank of Guatemala and Mexico - "batiman" (Creole for, literally, "butt man") has long been the supreme slur against gay men, the worst possible insult to their personhood and dignity. But now another slur is beginning to take its place: "Orozco." Five years ago, Orozco?s lawyer walked into the Belize Supreme Court Registry and handed over a stack of papers that initiated the first challenge in Caribbean history to the criminalization of sodomy. Caleb Orozco v. the Attorney General of Belize focuses on Section 53, a statute in the Belize criminal code that calls for a 10-year prison term for "carnal intercourse against the order of nature." If Orozco won, his supporters hoped, it would establish a moral precedent across the Caribbean and even create a domino effect, putting pressure on other governments to decriminalize sodomy. But it took three years for the Supreme Court to hear the case; two years later, the nation still awaits a verdict. In the meantime, Orozco operates the United Belize Advocacy Movement, or Unibam, the only gay rights advocacy and policy group in Belize, out of his home.

The Global State of LGBTIQ Organizing : the Right to Register  / Written by Felicity Daly.

onderwerpen:
thema:
  1. lhbti-beweging
  2. lhbti
samenvatting: The study finds that many organizations globally cannot register if they explicitly state their aim to serve LGBTIQ people or address their concerns. Governments often deny registration on religious and moral grounds, to limit the fundamental freedom of assembly, and have gone so far as to call LGBTIQ organizations a threat to national security. In-depth case studies from Belize, China, Lebanon, Germany, Nigeria, Russia, St Lucia, Singapore, Tanzania and Tunisia present the experiences of 22 LGBTIQ civil society leaders seeking or maintaining their registration status. Without a registration status many funders are unable to support LGBTIQ organizations and sometimes even opening an organizational bank account is impossible. Non registered LGBTIQ organizations may not be able to meet with government officials, and sometimes not even hold their own meetings without breaking the law. Without legal recognition groups can be forced to go underground, avoid public activism, be relegated to a hidden social network or group, or to even work illegally. In the worst cases, they experience state surveillance, indiscriminate arrests, and state sanctioned violence.

Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights : (Neo)colonialism, Neoliberalism, Resistance and Hope  /

ed. by Nancy Nicol ... [et al.].London: University of London Institute of Commonwealth Studies, 2018 - xxx, 428 p.: ill.

samenvatting: Envisioning Global LGBT Human Rights: (Neo)colonialism, Neoliberalism, Resistance and Hope is an outcome of a five-year international collaboration among partners that share a common legacy of British colonial laws that criminalise same-sex intimacy and gender identity/expression. The project sought to facilitate learning from each other and to create outcomes that would advance knowledge and social justice. The project was unique, combining research and writing with participatory documentary filmmaking. This visionary politics infuses the pages of the anthology. The chapters are bursting with invaluable first hand insights from leading activists at the forefront of some of the most fiercely fought battlegrounds of contemporary sexual politics in India, the Caribbean and Africa. As well, authors from Canada, Botswana and Kenya examine key turning points in the advancement of SOGI issues at the United Nations, and provide critical insights on LGBT asylum in Canada. Authors also speak to a need to reorient and decolonise queer studies, and turn a critical gaze northwards from the Global South. It is a book for activists and academics in a range of disciplines from postcolonial and sexualities studies to filmmaking, as well as for policy-makers and practitioners committed to envisioning, and working for, a better future.
