Transsexual artist Titica takes Angola by storm  / Louise Redvers.

BBC News 12-04-2012
bron: BBC News 12-04-2012
samenvatting: She is bold, she is bright, she is beautiful and she is taking Angola by storm. Not bad for a transsexual in a Catholic African country where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by hard labour. Born in Luanda as Teca Miguel Garcia, singer and dancer Titica adopted her female persona four years ago following a breast enhancement operation in Brazil. Now, at 25, Titica is the new face of Angola's unique urban rap-techno fusion music style known as "kuduro".

samenvatting: In order to obtain a good understanding of the context in which LGBTIs live, including the political and social climate, the extent of the HIV epidemic and the HIV/AIDS response in their respective countries, COC Netherlands - in collaboration with its partner organisations - carried out baseline studies on the health and human-rights situation of key populations in a number of countries, each of which is considered in this report. Conducted between 2012 and 2014, those baseline studies focused on three key populations: their primary focus was on LGBTIs, but they also mapped out the situation for sex workers and injecting drug users (IDU). The baseline documents present an overview of the exact situation in terms of legal obstacles, legal protections and HIV-response policies in the countries studied, as well as the extent to which those policies include or fail to include the specific key populations mentioned above. Baseline studies were carried out in Angola (2014), Botswana (2012), Lesotho (2014), Malawi (2013), Mozambique (2014), Namibia (2014), South Africa (2013), Swaziland (2013), Zambia (2014) and Zimbabwe (2013).

samenvatting: Individuals engaging in same-sex acts, individuals identifying as LGBTI and individuals who do not conform to heteronormative ideals of gender and sexuality experience structural, institutional and individual discrimination and exclusion across the world. This is no different in Southern African countries. While LGBTI individuals are heterogeneous and face very specific challenges based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and other factors, they share experiences of structural, institutional and individual discrimination and marginalisation based on their sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). In most Southern African countries, same-sex activity remains criminalised, which further marginalises LGBTI individuals, and acts as an additional barrier to accessing public services and realising full civil and political rights. This contemporary literature review focuses on the state of LGBTI human rights in 10 Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The purpose of this review is to contribute towards a strong evidence base and scientific foundation for informed programming in the region.

Before We Were Trans : A New History of Gender  /

Kit Heyam.London: Basic Books, 2022 - viii, 342 p.

samenvatting: Across the world today, people of all ages are doing fascinating, creative, messy things with gender. These people have a rich history - but one that is often left behind by narratives of trans lives that focus on people with stable, binary, uncomplicated gender identities. As a result, these stories tend to be recent, binary, stereotyped, medicalised and white. 'Before We Were Trans' is a new and different story of gender, that seeks not to be comprehensive or definitive, but - by blending culture, feminism and politics - to widen the scope of what we think of as trans history by telling the stories of people across the globe whose experience of gender has been transgressive, or not characterised by stability or binary categories. Transporting us from Renaissance Venice to seventeenth-century Angola, from Edo Japan to North America, the stories this book tells leave questions and resist conclusions. They are fraught with ambiguity, and defy modern Western terminology and categories - not least the category of 'trans' itself. But telling them provides a history that reflects the richness of modern trans reality more closely than any previously written. 'Before We Were Trans' is a history and celebration of gender in all its fluidity, ambiguity and complexity.
