samenvatting: Am 15. Mai 1991 konstituierte sich eine kleine Gruppe von Studenten unter dem Namen "Rosa Geschichten" als Arbeitskreis des Kommunikations-Centrums Münsterland (KCM), um die Geschichte der Schwulenbewegung in Münster zu erforschen. Mit dabei r, der nun eine Professur für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Universität Hamburg innehat und in den letzten Jahren durch weitere Studien im Bereich der Geschichte von Minderheiten hervorgetreten ist. Anlass war der 20. Jahrestag der Gründung der Homophilen Studentengruppe Münster (HSM). Sie hatte sich im April 1971 unter der Ägide Reiner Pleins als zweite schwule Hochschulinitiative in Nordrhein-Westfalen nach Bochum gebildet, wo sich zwei Monate zuvor eine ähnliche Gruppe konstituiert hatte, und als eine der ersten deutschen Organisationen überhaupt. Münster darf als "Wiege" der zweiten deutschen Schwulen- und Lesbenbewegung angesehen werden, nachdem die erste - und in Europa bis dahin führende - von den Nationalsozialisten nach 1933 in den Konzentrationslagern ausgelöscht worden war. In den letzten dreißig Jahren ist das schwul-lesbische Leben in Münster immer bunter und vielfältiger geworden: Weitere Gruppen mit unterschiedlichen Anliegen haben sich gebildet wie der Sportverein "androgym", der Chor "Homophon" oder die Schwulen- und Lesbenreferate zuerst an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität, dann auch an den beiden Fachhochschulen. Der HuSch-Ball der AIDS-Hilfe Münster dient nicht nur der Sammlung von Spenden, sondern ist heute auch Teil des Kulturlebens der Stadt. Die Geschichte dieser breitgefächerten Bewegung anhand ihrer Dokumente zu bewahren, hat sich das schwul-lesbische Archiv Münster »Rosa Geschichten« zum Ziel gesetzt.

samenvatting: In 1945, Eddy Sackville-West, Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Eardley Knollys - writers for the New Statesman and a National Trust administrator - purchased Long Crichel House, an old rectory with no electricity and an inadequate water supply. In this improbable place, the last English literary salon began. Quieter and less formal than the famed London literary salons, Long Crichel became an idiosyncratic experiment in communal living. Sackville-West, Shawe-Taylor and Knollys - later joined by the literary critic Raymond Mortimer - became members of one another's surrogate families and their companionship became a stimulus for writing, for them and their guests. Long Crichel's visitors' book reveals a Who's Who of the arts in post-war Britain - Nancy Mitford, Benjamin Britten, Laurie Lee, Cyril Connolly, Somerset Maugham, E.M. Forster, Cecil Beaton, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson - who were attracted by the good food, generous quantities of drink and excellent conversation. For Frances Partridge and James Lees-Milne, two of the twentieth century's finest diarists, Long Crichel became a second home and their lives became bound up with the house. Yet there was to be more to the story of the house than what critics variously referred to as a group of 'hyphenated gentlemen-aesthetes' and a 'prose factory'. In later years the house and its inhabitants were to weather the aftershocks of the Crichel Down Affair, the Wolfenden Report and the AIDS crisis. The story of Long Crichel is also part of the development of the National Trust and other conservation movements. Through the lens of Long Crichel, archivist and writer Simon Fenwick tells a wider story of the great upheaval that took place in the second half of the twentieth century. Intimate and revealing, he brings to life Long Crichel's golden, gossipy years and, in doing so, unveils a missing link in English literary and cultural history.

samenvatting: Situating itself in the crosshairs of critical whiteness studies, queer studies, and Black studies, this essay considers the literary production of the (poor) white trash subject in the intersection of two moments of racial upheaval - the civil rights era of the US South and the "focus on the family" during the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s - in which whiteness was under siege. Taking its cue from Toni Morrison's articulation of the white imaginary and W. E. B. Du Bois's history of the (Black) and white working class, this article looks at representations of queerness in Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina to (1) understand the ways in which poor whiteness solidifies through queer moments of "bad" sex; and (2) reveal the ways in which "bad sex" retards white subjectivity/progressivity.

samenvatting: Ondanks berichten dat de kerken leeglopen en kloosters moeten sluiten, is de hang naar religie nog altijd sterk geworteld in onze samenleving. Traditionele geloofsgemeenschappen hebben het moeilijk, terwijl alternatieve vormen van religie en spiritualiteit juist floreren. Meer dan de helft van de Nederlanders verklaart desgevraagd 'iets' te geloven, maar men beleeft dat ?iets? meestal strikt individueel. De afgelopen halve eeuw hebben opvallend veel Nederlandse schrijvers zich uitgesproken over God en het goddelijke, als tegenstander, afvallige, agnost of twijfelaar, maar ook als bekeerling of nog altijd praktiserend kerkganger. Onder hen bevinden zich oude en nieuwe christenen, atheïsten, tegendraadse mystici, joden die op zoek zijn naar hun wortels en zelfs een enkele voodoopriesteres. In dit boek laat Jaap Goedegebuure zien hoe hun overwegingen en bekommernissen literair vorm krijgen in romans en in poëzie, maar ook in een stijl die van auteur tot auteur is toegesneden op een hoogstpersoonlijke variant van de religieuze ervaring. Er is ruime aandacht voor de confronterende visies van Gerard Reve en Frans Kellendonk, maar ook voor de onthechtingsoefeningen van dichters als C.O. Jellema en Hans Faverey. 'Nederlandse schrijvers en religie 1960-2010' biedt een spectrum dat reikt van Gerard Reve tot Désanne van Brederode en van Andreas Burnier tot Willem Jan Otten.
