The Violence of the Cut : Transgender Homeopathy and Cinematic Aesthetics  / Eliza Steinbock.

source:
resume: I return to [Lili] Elbe's life story, rather than one of the many other trans memoirs, biographies, and accounts written since, to point to the tensions apparent from even the very emergence of Transsexual aesthetics between that of a curative violence wrought through surgical cuts and the accessing of agency by desiring and undergoing a reassemblage of embodiment. This is no happy return to the origin story; rather, working through the difficulties of Elbe's self-narration of sex change will demonstrate an enabling refusal to be neither a coherently proper victim of her condition or cure, nor a sovereign subject created ex nihilo. Elbe's engagement with the technologies of sex-change suggests a working-through more in line with the principles of homeopathy and a more entangled experience of subjectivity wrought through technologies that might be better phrased as Transsexual somatechnics.

Photographic Flashes : On Imaging Trans Violence in Heather Cassils' Durational Art  / Eliza Steinbock.

Photography & Culture, 7 (2014) 3, p. 253-268
source: Photography & Culture year: 7 (2014) 3 , p. 253-268
resume: Cassils' recent work opens up a set of questions relevant to the study of gender variant and queer visual cultures: Does a trans body experienced as a punctum (a detail or intensity of time that pricks the viewer) indicate queer anxieties? What is the temporality of photographic violence? How can the body's resiliency be pictured? The essay advances by tracking intersecting violences in Cassils' Cuts and Becoming An Image, and then concludes with a consideration of bodybuilding as a model for understanding the dual nature of violence's generative-destructive powers.

Shimmering Images : Trans Cinema, Embodiment, and the Aesthetics of Change  /

Eliza Steinbock.Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2019 - xiii, 231 p.: ill.
edition: Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2019 - xiii, 231 p.: ill.
annotation: Bibliogr.: p. 199-217.
subjects:
resume: In Shimmering Images Eliza Steinbock traces how cinema offers alternative ways to understand gender transitions through a specific aesthetics of change. Drawing on Barthes's idea of the "shimmer" and Foucault's notion of sex as a mirage, the author shows how sex and gender can appear mirage-like on film, an effect they label shimmering. Steinbock applies the concept of shimmering - which delineates change in its emergent form as well as the qualities of transforming bodies, images, and affects - to analyses of films that span time and genre. These include examinations of the fantastic and phantasmagorical shimmerings of sex change in Georges Méliès's nineteenth-century trick films and Lili Elbe's 1931 autobiographical writings and photomontage in Man into Woman. Steinbock also explores more recent documentaries, science fiction, and pornographic and experimental films. Presenting a cinematic philosophy of transgender embodiment that demonstrates how shimmering images mediate transitioning, Steinbock not only offers a corrective to the gender binary orientation of feminist film theory; they open up new means to understand trans ontologies and epistemologies as emergent, affective, and processual.

Generative Negatives : Del LaGrace Volcano's Herm Body Photographs  / Eliza Steinbock.

TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly, 1 (2014) 4 (nov), p. 539-551
source: TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly year: 1 (2014) 4 (nov), p. 539-551
resume: The most recent exhibited work of photographer Del LaGrace Volcano is a triptych from the series Herm Body (2011?), which presents Volcano's front and back torso conspicuously pared down, headless, and nude. Whereas in conventional film photography, negatives are used in the darkroom to make positive images (photographic prints), in the outmoded medium Polaroid 665, which Volcano employs, the positive image is used to make a (unique) negative. The generativity of the Polaroid 665 negative in Volcano's hands is not purely photographic; it is also affective. My essay explores the questions, what are the stakes and what are the consequences in a (photographic) negative generating and reflecting the artist's self-image? I attend to the vulnerabilities of the technical process as well as the strong formal and conceptual references to intersex bodies in medical photography and to aging bodies in images from John Coplans. In short, I propose that the Herm Body series shows how negative affect is productive and political, even when it appears to suspend agency.

INTER*me : An Inter-Locution on the Body in Photography  / Del Lagrace Volcano, Jay Prosser, and Eliza Steinbock

source:
resume: The international photographer Del LaGrace Volcano has over a 3O-year period made a consistent subject of gender variance, sexual con-nectedness, and body mutations. Hermself a "part time gender terrorist" and "intentional mutation" (Volcano 2005), herm's photography as staged the constructedness of gender and the rich diversity of body morphologies available to those who are really willing to look, in ways that have resonated deeply with-and moreover that have often preceded, influenced and crucially brought together-emerging lesbian, queer, trans and intersex theories. s/He is exceptional as a photographer and thinker in being concerned to show gender/sex as both highly performative and intimately embodied. Herm's work has thus spoken across nature/nurture debates in trans, intersex, and queer studies. In herms, own gender journey, gender is not so much transformed as transmogrified, as I have argued elsewhere (Prosser); that is, metamorphosed constantly its strangeness repeatedly eluciclated. More than any other artist, Volcano's oeuvre has presented queer, tans, and intersex people ", as subjects, rather than objects, since herm's images are creared througt looks of identification, affiliation and desire exchanged between the sitter and the photographer. s/He has approached photography knowingly as a kind of mirror - hard plastic surface for identification and love.
