The Interrelations Between Age, Sense of Belonging, and Depressive Symptoms Among Australian Gay Men and Lesbians  / Suzanne McLaren, Petah M. Gibbs, Eboni Watts.

Journal of Homosexuality, 60 (2013) 1 (jan), p. 1-15
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 60 (2013) 1 (jan), p. 1-15
samenvatting: Researchers have demonstrated that age is related to depression among gay men and lesbians, with younger adults experiencing more depression than older adults. Other researchers have indicated that a sense of belonging is related to lower levels of depression. This study investigated whether sense of belonging to the gay and lesbian community moderates and mediates the relationship between age and depressive symptoms among gay men and lesbians. An Australian sample of self-identified gay men (n = 346) and lesbians (n = 270) completed the Psychological subscale of the Sense of Belonging Instrument and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Results indicated that age and sense of belonging were directly and independently related to depressive symptoms for gay men and lesbians. In addition, for lesbians only, sense of belonging moderated the age-depressive symptom relation. For lesbians with low levels of sense belonging to the lesbian community, age was not associated with depressive symptoms. In contrast, for lesbians with high levels of sense of belonging to the lesbian community, the association between sense of belonging and depressive symptoms decreased with increasing age. Encouraging gay men and lesbians (especially younger lesbians) to become involved in the gay and lesbian community is likely to be beneficial for their mental health. What does it mean to be a successful adult? : Exploring perceptions of the transition into adulthood among LGBTQ emerging adults in a community-based service context  / M. Alex Wagaman, Melissa Foushee Keller and Stacey Jay Cavaliere.

Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services, 28 (2016) 2 (apr-jun), p. 140-158
bron: Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social Services jaargang: 28 (2016) 2 (apr-jun), p. 140-158
samenvatting: This study qualitatively explores the application of emerging adulthood theory to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) emerging adults. Researchers explored perspectives of LGBTQ emerging adults and service organization staff on their experiences of aging out of youth services. Descriptions of what success looks like, and self-defined needs associated with the transition from youth to adulthood, were collected through interviews and focus groups. Four conceptual areas emerged from a thematic analysis of the participants? discussions that were identified as characterizing the experiences of LGBTQ emerging adults: (a) community-supported independence, (b) close relationships/family kith, (c) personal preservation, and (d) strength to engage with heteronormative and cisnormative contexts. Researchers explored how these areas converge and diverge from current emerging adult theory and provide considerations for LGBTQ youth community-based services. "I Want to Be Who I Am" : Narratives of Transgender Persons  / Gerard Cavanaugh, Linda Ladd.

Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, 11 (2017) 3 (jul-sep), p. 156-173
bron: Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling jaargang: 11 (2017) 3 (jul-sep), p. 156-173
samenvatting: Research has documented the difficulties that face persons identifying as transgender, and that research has been steadily increasing. However, the bridge between research findings and practice is often elusive, particularly for those counselors, therapists, and other mental health professionals already in their respective professional lives. This retrospective phenomenological study documented the lives of 16 persons identifying as transgender (11 transwomen, five transmen) as they narrated the difficulties they encountered beginning in childhood through transition in adult life. Eight persons identifying as transgender were younger than age 40 years and eight were older than age 40 years and brought different narratives about their childhood, teen, and adult years.

The Queerness of the Drive  / Teresa de Lauretis.

Journal of Homosexuality, 64 (2017) 14, p. 1913-1929
bron: Journal of Homosexuality jaargang: 64 (2017) 14 , p. 1913-1929
samenvatting: The view of sexuality Freud first proposed in the Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality contains a discrepancy between the sexuality perverse and polymorphous described in the first two essays and the biologically directed, reproductive sexuality of the third essay. According to Jean Laplanche, the theorist of psychoanalysis who is Freud's closest reader and translator, the discrepancy is due to two contradictory opinions Freud apparently held at different moments of his writing: one, that sexuality is exogenous, an effect of seduction by adults; two, that sexuality is endogenous, innate in the human biological organism. This article focuses on Laplanche's elucidation of two aspects of sexuality present in each adult: an instinctual, hormonally based, and ultimately reproductive sexual impulse, which begins at puberty, and the drive-based sexual impulses first theorized by Freud as polymorphous-perverse infantile sexuality, which begin in infancy and continue to be active throughout the individual's life. Laplanche's rereading of Freud leads to a more complex understanding of sexuality as always deviant, in one way or another and to a greater or lesser degree, from the established social norms. So-called sexual deviance, therefore, is not a problem within the sexual but an issue within the social field.
