samenvatting: Trans Historical explores the plurality of gender experiences that flourished before the modern era, from Late Antiquity to the eighteenth century, across a broad geographic range, from Spain to Poland and Byzantium to Boston. Refuting arguments that transgender people, experiences, and identities were non-existent or even impossible prior to the twentieth century, this volume focuses on archives--literary texts, trial transcripts, documents, and artifacts--that denaturalize gender as a category. The volume historicizes the many different social lives of sexual differentiation, exploring what gender might have been before modern medicine, the anatomical sciences, and the sedimentation of gender difference into its putatively binary form. The volume's multidisciplinary group of contributors consider how individuals, communities, and states understood and enacted gender as a social experience distinct from the assignment of sex at birth. Alongside historical questions about the meaning of sexual differentiation, Trans Historical also offers a series of diverse meditations on how scholars of the medieval and early modern periods might approach gender nonconformity before the nineteenth-century emergence of the norm and the normal.

samenvatting: Who is Amsterdam, really? This Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam presents the Dutch capital as experienced by the residents themselves. Many who call Amsterdam home -- especially those most often pushed to the margins -- translate their experiences into maps, drawings, photos, and graphics. You?ll see streets you?ve not yet walked down, far beyond the historical centre, through the eyes of people you may not have met, but who could be your neighbours. These pages illustrate unsung neighbourhoods, subjective mundanities, vital criticism, and declarations of love, creating a nuanced collection that captures something difficult to quantify or make tangible: how cultures shape a city. Initiated by the Architecture Centre of Amsterdam (Arcam), this book, and the plural realities within it, reflect on how to make the city a better place, for everyone. The book is a result of a series of workshops, organised by Arcam together with Subjective Editions and eight partner organisations in Amsterdam. The LGBTIQ+ contributions in the book come from workshop #4 given by IHLIA, on 29 March 2022. During the workshop, each participant was asked to reflect on what is a personally meaningful, striking or underexposed phenomenon that typifies Amsterdam. In the afternoon, everyone got to work on mapping this phenomenon: from gentrification and socio-economic polarisation in neighbourhoods to mapping the hidden queer history that manifests itself in the streets of Amsterdam.

samenvatting: Ellen Jansen vertelt in Eindelijk Ellen haar aangrijpende levensverhaal. Geboren in een jongenslichaam groeide ze op tot een populaire puber en een daadkrachtige ondernemer. Voor de buitenwereld leek Ellen alles voor de wind te gaan. Diep van binnen was ze echter doodongelukkig. Uit pure angst voor de reacties uit haar omgeving, zowel zakelijk als privé, bleef ze haar ware identiteit jarenlang hardnekkig onderdrukken. Een zware depressie met fysieke klachten en zelfs suïcidale neigingen was het gevolg. Op het dieptepunt koos ze uiteindelijk voluit voor een bevrijdende transitie. En daardoor werd ze Eindelijk Ellen, de stralende en gelukkige (zaken)vrouw die ze nu is. Ellen is met haar bedrijf Cheappower4U succesvol op het gebied van energietransities in de woningbouw. Als coach en spreker helpt zij daarnaast mensen, teams en organisaties met gewenste transformaties. Ook zet Ellen zich als ambassadrice in voor initiatieven die een inclusieve samenleving nastreven.

samenvatting: The contributors to Left of Queer offer a detailed examination of queerness and its nearly three-decade academic institutionalization. They interrogate contemporary material conditions that create socially and politically acceptable queer subjects and identities; trace the development of queer studies as a brand of US area studies predicated on American culture and exceptionalism; and bring together queer theory and Marxism to reject claims that the two fields are incompatible. In examining these themes, the contributors explore how emergent debates in three key areas--debility, indigeneity, and trans--connect queer studies to a host of urgent sociopolitical issues. Taking a position that is politically left of the current academic and political mainstreaming of queerness, the essays in this issue examine what is left of queer--what remains outside of the political, economic, and cultural mandates of the state and the liberal individual as its prized subject.
