samenvatting:	I analyze the ways in which trans/nonbinary participants queered gender labor and emotion work in intimate relationships by negotiating expectations to feel "proper" ways for intimates and to educate intimates about cis-ness/whiteness. Based on semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 15 trans/nonbinary individuals utilizing photo elicitation methods, participants queered intimate emotions by negotiating, reconfiguring, and resisting emotional expectations. They did this through selectively dating trans/nonbinary people and/or queer/trans people of color. Queering intimate emotions functioned to mitigate the effects of whiteness and cis-ness within intimate relationships. I build upon literature on gender labor, emotion work, and trans emotionalities.

samenvatting:	This article examines the relationship between language and sexual identity, using data collected from in-depth interviews with cisgender women who are in relationships with female-to-male transgender men. The data illustrate that many of the women have complex relationships with the labels that they use to describe their own sexual identity currently and in their past. When referring to their own sexual identities, cisgender women partners of trans men (a) are flexible with specific terms they use in order to respond to varying social contexts, (b) use specific terms to signify cultural belonging to or difference from different communities, and (c) use language as a suggestive action to others to question heteronormative assumptions. Further, this research highlights the importance of considering time in sexuality research, including the timing of the partnerships, and collecting data that reflect the individuals' histories to analyze the connection between sexual identity and the use of language.

Zijn moeder is altijd begripvol geweest voor Floris z'n homoseksualiteit, Hij hoefde dan ook niet 'uit de kast' te komen. Toen hij tijdens diensttijd en ook later met vrienden thuiskwam, vond zijn moeder het enig: al die mooie mannen. Op z'n vijftiende ging Floris werken in eeen herenmodezaak in Alkmaar: 'Ik heb nooit iemand verteld dat ik homo ben. Mensen zagen mij, ze wisten het, en ik vond het zelf niet nodig om het te zeggen.' Floris was eeen aantrekkelijke jongen. Op zijn 23ste zag hij een advertentie van een modellenbureau, solliciteerde en werd meteen aangenomen. Zijn modellenbaan bleek hij goed te kunnen combineren met z'n werk in de herenmodezaak. Hij bleef in Alkmaaar wonen, maar ging vaak in Amsterdam uit: 'Dat was toch wel het mekka voor de eenzame homoman. Je vond er veel gelegenheden om je te vermaken.' Naast talloze avontuurtjes had Floris ook betekenisvolle relaties. De langste en belangrijkste was met Harold met wie hij 25 jaar lief en leed deelde.

samenvatting:	The research in this thesis deals with the lessons that fans absorb from consuming media of the genre Boys' Love (BL) from Asia. BL that is produced in Asia is a genre of love stories between two men that attracts many young women in Asia and across the globe. As many young people's only source of material and information on male same-sex relationships, they become an influential space for knowledge production. The research into this topic contained one-on-one interviews and an online survey with participants from Vietnam, a country that has not received as much attention as other Asian countries on this subject. Through these interviews and its associated survey the attitudes of the fans reveal how open this group of Vietnamese fans is to absorbing elements from BL and transferring them to real life. Working with self-reflective comments and observations of other fans, their attachments to the characters and narratives showcase their understandings of fiction and reality and how they can be connected. Misconceptions about same-sex relationships are present in many stories and while some problematic elements stand out to the attention of some fans, other aspects go unnoticed. BL affects their lives by influencing how they view people in real life and how they view and build certain relationships. Fans learn to accept and normalize certain views and behaviors that stem from the BL narratives and the BL fandom. This thesis investigates the different fans? awareness of the fictionality of BL and in which knowledge from BL they transfer to real life.
